Install FFmpeg from Ubuntu’s configured repositories with sudo apt update and sudo apt install ffmpeg, then verify it with ffmpeg -version. That installs the encoder, not a continuous stream: you also need a repeating or continuing video source, YouTube’s server URL and stream key, compatible output settings, and a process manager such as systemd to restart FFmpeg after a failure.

Install FFmpeg from Ubuntu’s repositories

  1. Check the Ubuntu release. Run cat /etc/os-release to identify the server release. The FFmpeg version available depends on that release and its enabled repositories; Ubuntu’s package index lists FFmpeg, but there is no single version number that applies to every Ubuntu Server installation. Ubuntu package search and the Ubuntu Server package-management guide provide package context and installation guidance.
  2. Refresh package metadata and install. Run:
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install ffmpeg

apt update refreshes the package index; apt install installs the named package. Google Cloud’s encoder setup also uses sudo apt install ffmpeg as an example. Google Cloud FFmpeg installation example

  3. Verify the program and available encoders. Run ffmpeg -version to see the installed build, and ffmpeg -encoders to inspect available encoders. If a workflow depends on a particular codec or hardware encoder, verify it is available instead of assuming the package includes it. See the Ubuntu FFmpeg manpage.

For a straightforward setup, start with the version supplied by your Ubuntu release. Avoid adding a third-party PPA just to obtain a newer build unless you have a specific feature requirement and have checked the repository’s provenance, update policy, and compatibility. Ubuntu cautions users to research non-standard repositories in its package-management guidance.

Prepare the source and YouTube stream

Choose a source that can keep producing video

For prerecorded content, FFmpeg needs a file or playlist that can repeat or otherwise provide a continuing sequence. For a live camera, capture card, or network feed, that source must remain available and its own reconnect behavior matters. Installing FFmpeg alone does not loop a file or make a source reliable. A community example illustrates looping local media, but it is an operator example rather than a universal command recipe: community FFmpeg operations example.

Create the stream in YouTube Live Control Room

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key for the ingestion protocol you plan to use.
  3. Configure FFmpeg to send its output to that URL using that key.

YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the connection details. Treat the key like a password: don’t put a real key in a public script, repository, screenshot, or world-readable unit file. Use a permissions-restricted configuration or environment file. If the key is exposed, regenerate it in YouTube Studio.

Choose an ingestion protocol and output settings

For a conventional FFmpeg stream, RTMPS is the sensible default: YouTube recommends it, and it encrypts the connection through Google’s servers. HLS is a separate option for certain cases, including HDR or codecs not supported through RTMP; it uses HTTPS and segmented output, has higher latency, and requires different segment and playlist settings. Do not combine HLS configuration with an RTMP/RTMPS output command. Compare YouTube’s encoder settings with its HLS setup guidance before choosing.

Encoder settings to check

  • Video codec and frame rate: YouTube’s cited RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video and frame rates up to 60 fps.
  • Rate control: use constant bitrate encoding for the recommended setup.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • H.264 bitrate examples: YouTube recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30, with a 4 Mbps minimum; at 720p60, it recommends 8 Mbps, with a 3 Mbps minimum. These are platform recommendations, not proof that your server’s connection can sustain the rate.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs, recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo, and recommends 128 kbps stereo audio.

These values come from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings. Pick a stable output rate below the server’s measured, sustained upload capacity, then test with media whose motion and audio resemble the intended stream. A nominal bandwidth figure does not establish that an upload connection will remain steady.

Run FFmpeg under systemd

A process supervisor can start FFmpeg when the server boots and restart it after a process failure. It cannot guarantee that YouTube is receiving healthy video and audio: the host, network, source, credentials, encoding settings, and YouTube ingest all remain dependencies. Ubuntu’s systemd documentation explains service management.

Create a dedicated service account and protect configuration

Run the stream as a dedicated, unprivileged account rather than root. Keep the real stream key in a configuration file readable only by the service account and administrators; avoid embedding the secret in a publicly readable unit file or a command that might be exposed in logs or process listings. Confirm that the service account can read the media and configuration before enabling automatic startup.

Define, test, and enable the service

  1. Create a systemd unit with a descriptive name such as youtube-stream.service. Set the service user, working directory, input and output configuration, and an appropriate restart policy. The exact FFmpeg command depends on your source and chosen encoding; do not copy a loop example as if it fit every file, codec, or stream key.
  2. Reload systemd after creating or changing a unit: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  3. Start it for a test: sudo systemctl start youtube-stream.service.
  4. Inspect the host-side process state: sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service. For service logs, run sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service.
  5. Check the preview and stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. A service marked active only shows that systemd considers its process running; it does not prove that YouTube is receiving playable video and audio.
  6. After verifying source access, credentials, output, logs, and recovery behavior, enable startup on boot: sudo systemctl enable youtube-stream.service. Test a controlled restart and confirm both the service state and YouTube’s health display.

YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring its health in Live Control Room. A restart policy is process supervision, not an end-to-end uptime guarantee. Long-running continuity still depends on the server, power, network upload, source media, correct credentials, encoder configuration, and YouTube ingest.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • ffmpeg: command not found: confirm installation with dpkg -l ffmpeg; if needed, rerun sudo apt update and sudo apt install ffmpeg. Check that the installed package matches the server’s configured Ubuntu repositories.
  • The service exits immediately: inspect sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service and sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service. Look for an invalid FFmpeg option, unreadable input or configuration, missing encoder, or malformed output URL.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: recheck the selected server URL, ingestion protocol, and stream key in Live Control Room. Confirm the key has not been revoked or exposed, and check YouTube’s preview and health messages.
  • Video or audio health is poor: verify codec, constant bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and audio settings against YouTube’s encoder guidance. Reduce the target bitrate if the measured sustained upload capacity cannot support it.
  • The process is active but viewers cannot see healthy playback: distinguish the systemd process state from YouTube ingest health. Check the preview, health messages, source availability, and service logs rather than treating “active” as proof of a working stream.
  • The stream stops after a reboot or host outage: verify the service is enabled and examine boot-time logs, but also account for host, network, and source failures. A restart policy cannot restore an unavailable source or connection by itself.

What determines whether a server is suitable?

There is no single server size established for every stream. Assess the sustained upload bandwidth for the selected bitrate, CPU capacity for the chosen encoding, storage and access to the source, process limits, and the network path between the host and YouTube. If you use a VPS or dedicated server, evaluate those measurable needs and operational reliability; the available guidance does not establish a particular provider or instance size.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream without maintaining an Ubuntu host and systemd service, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
