You can install OpenAI’s official ChatGPT desktop app on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or 26.04 LTS with the matching Ubuntu/Debian .deb package, then install it with apt. For a terminal-based coding workflow, OpenAI also provides Codex CLI for Linux; it is a separate option and does not require the desktop app.
Install the official ChatGPT desktop app
OpenAI describes its Linux desktop app as being in public preview. The current Linux guide lists Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS as supported desktop releases. Follow the official ChatGPT desktop app for Linux guide to download the package; avoid unofficial PPAs and wrappers.

- Check your processor architecture. Open Terminal and run
uname -m. Choose the x64 package forx86_64, or the ARM64 package foraarch64orarm64. - Download the matching package. In OpenAI’s Linux desktop guide, select the Ubuntu/Debian
.debfor your architecture. - Install the downloaded file. If it is in your Downloads folder, run the command for your architecture:
- x64:
cd ~/Downloads && sudo apt install ./chatgpt_amd64.deb - ARM64:
cd ~/Downloads && sudo apt install ./chatgpt_arm64.deb
Use the filename that matches the package you downloaded. The ./ tells apt to install the local package file. The guide’s installation process configures OpenAI’s signed package repository for updates.

- Launch and sign in. Open ChatGPT from Ubuntu’s applications menu, or run
chatgptin Terminal. Sign in with your ChatGPT account when prompted.
Update ChatGPT after installation
Once the signed package repository is configured, refresh Ubuntu’s package metadata and install any available ChatGPT update:

Install Codex CLI for a terminal workflow
If you want to use Codex from a project directory rather than through the graphical desktop app, install the Linux-capable Codex CLI with OpenAI’s standalone installer. The Codex CLI quickstart does not require installing the ChatGPT desktop app first.

- Open Terminal and run the installer command from OpenAI’s Codex CLI documentation:
curl -fsSL https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.sh | sh
- Change to the project directory you want to work in and run
codex. - At first run, select Sign in with ChatGPT or another sign-in method offered in the CLI.

What to expect from the Linux preview
OpenAI’s release notes say browser actions work in the built-in browser or Chrome, but controlling other desktop applications is not yet supported. The Linux guide also describes native Wayland support as experimental: the app uses XWayland when available. To explicitly select native Wayland, launch it with chatgpt --ozone-platform=wayland. Floating windows, positioning, focus, and keyboard shortcuts may not work fully with native Wayland support.

If the app behaves inconsistently on a Wayland session, try the default launch first, which allows XWayland where available. Use the explicit Wayland launch only if you want to test native support and can tolerate those limitations.
