Before you begin: confirm the fixture and installation are compatible
Read the complete instructions for the exact fixture before removing the old one. Fixture construction, mounting hardware and wiring requirements vary, so a generic wiring diagram is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s directions or applicable local electrical rules.

- Supply voltage: Compare the circuit’s supply voltage with the value on the luminaire label. Signify’s instruction sheet says to verify that the supply voltage is correct by referencing the luminaire label.
- Location marking: Check that the fixture’s marking and instructions permit installation at the intended bathroom location. How to replace a vanity light safely

Turn off the circuit at the panel
Switch off the relevant circuit at the breaker or fuse panel. Do not rely on the wall switch alone: the Moen guide directs users to turn off the bathroom’s main power supply and test that power is off, while a vanity light owner’s manual warns that turning off the light switch is not sufficient to prevent electric shock.

Verify that power is off
Before touching or disconnecting conductors, use a suitable tester to confirm the circuit is de-energized. A non-contact voltage tester can provide an additional check after shutting off the breaker; it does not make uncertain wiring safe. If you cannot reliably confirm power is off, stop and call an electrician.

Remove the old fixture and inspect the box
Remove the old fixture carefully, following any relevant instructions. Inspect the box, conductors and grounding path. Do not proceed if insulation is damaged, the box is unstable or damaged, conductors are unexplained, or grounding is absent or unclear. Those conditions call for qualified help.

Identify conductors before connecting them
Use the new fixture’s wiring instructions and the actual wiring configuration. Do not assume conductor function from color alone: the Moen guide notes that house-wire colors may differ from its illustration and advises seeking qualified assistance when in doubt. Switch-loop arrangements and other existing wiring can vary.

Connect and mount exactly as instructed
Install the mounting plate and make only connections you can confidently identify, using connectors suitable for the conductors and the fixture instructions. Signify’s luminaire instructions call for UL-approved wire connectors and electrical and grounding connections in accordance with applicable code.

Moen’s guide gives a model-specific example of black to black, white to white, and the fixture’s green wire to a green or bare grounding conductor. If there is no green or bare ground wire, that example directs connecting the fixture ground to the mounting plate’s green ground screw. This is not a universal wiring diagram: do not apply it if your fixture or existing wiring differs. Follow the instructions for your exact model and get qualified help if the grounding path is unclear.
Secure the mounting plate, fixture body and any shades or globes with the specified hardware. Confirm the fixture is mechanically secure before restoring power.

Restore power only after assembly is complete
Once the fixture is fully mounted and assembled, restore power and check its operation. If the breaker trips, conductors heat, you smell burning, or the light behaves unexpectedly, switch the circuit off and seek professional help. Do not repeatedly energize the circuit or troubleshoot exposed live wiring.

Common wiring mistakes to avoid
- Using only the wall switch: Shut off the circuit at the breaker or fuse panel and verify power is off before handling conductors.
- Treating wire colors as proof: A manual’s black/white/green example does not establish what every conductor in your box does.
- Skipping or improvising the ground: Follow the exact fixture instructions and confirm the actual grounding arrangement; do not invent a substitute connection.
- Using unsuitable connectors: Choose connectors appropriate for the conductors and consistent with the fixture instructions and applicable code.
- Ignoring ratings and mounting limits: Check voltage, wattage, location marking, box compatibility and the specified mounting method before installation.
- Assuming every bathroom light has the same GFCI or location rules: Requirements depend on the fixture and local rules; confirm what applies to the intended location.
- Continuing when something does not match: Unfamiliar wiring, unclear grounding, a damaged box or conductors that conflict with the fixture instructions are stop-work conditions.
When to hire an electrician
Use a qualified licensed electrician if the circuit cannot be confirmed de-energized, the wiring method or conductor identities are unfamiliar, grounding is missing or unclear, the box is damaged or unsuitable, or the fixture instructions do not match the installation. The same applies when you cannot determine whether the fixture’s location marking or local electrical rules permit installation at that position. A like-for-like replacement is not a reason to guess about electrical connections.
