How to Install Armada OS on a Supported Android Handheld

Armada brings Steam and a Linux gaming environment to specific Android handhelds, but compatibility is model-specific and installation requires careful bootloader work.

You can install Armada OS on certain ARM64 gaming handhelds that normally run Android, but it does not turn them into Steam Decks. Armada is a third-party, SteamOS-like Linux distribution, and its documented SD-card setup involves flashing an image, changing bootloader files, choosing device-specific boot options, and completing Steam’s first-run setup. The official guide does not establish that the full process takes under five minutes.

What Armada OS does—and what it does not do

Armada is a Linux gaming environment for a defined set of supported ARM64 handhelds. It includes Steam, Game Mode, a KDE desktop, FEX x86 translation and Proton, giving users a Steam-focused alternative to the device’s usual Android setup. The project describes its configured software stack at Armada’s overview.

It is not Valve’s official SteamOS, and installing it does not make a handheld a Steam Deck. Valve’s own distribution and supported hardware are described separately in its SteamOS installation and repair information.

Check whether your exact handheld is supported

Support is model- and variant-specific. A handheld from a named brand, or one with a similar processor, is not necessarily compatible. Check Armada’s current device list and the entry for your precise model and display or panel variant before downloading anything. The project’s repository directs users to “Check my handheld”; release and device availability can change over time. Start with the Armada project repository and its downloads and changelog.

The official site’s support overview names AYN, Retroid and AYANEO, but that brand-level overview is not a substitute for confirming your exact device in the maintained list. Verify the current release, known issues, SoC, display variant and recovery instructions in the live documentation.

Understand the risks before installing

Armada’s repository warns: “Armada is prototype software under active development. Installation requires bootloader changes that can brick a device, corrupt partitions, or cause data loss.” This is not a routine Android app installation. Changing boot files incorrectly can leave a handheld unusable or damage data.

  • Back up important files and data before you begin.
  • Follow only the instructions for your exact handheld and SoC. The installation guide warns that flashing an ABL bootloader image for the wrong SoC can brick the device.
  • Back up both ABL partitions as directed by the guide, then copy both backup images to a PC before flashing anything.
  • Read the device-specific recovery instructions in advance. Do not proceed if you cannot identify the correct files or understand how you would restore the original bootloader.

What you need for the SD-card installation

  • A handheld listed as supported by the current Armada documentation.
  • A 64GB or larger SD card; Armada recommends A2 speed for best results.
  • A PC and an image-writing application. The guide names Balena Etcher, Raspberry Pi Imager and Win32 Disk Imager; experienced command-line users can use dd. These are software options, not required paid purchases.
  • Access to the device’s Android root-script mechanism, as required by its model-specific bootloader steps.
  • The correct current Armada image and matching ROCKNIX ABL files for your device’s SoC.

Use the current instructions on the official SD-card installation guide. The outline below is not a replacement for its exact device-specific commands and menu instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install Armada from an SD card

  1. Download the current image. Get the dated image for your supported model from Armada’s downloads page. Confirm the release and model match the documentation.
  2. Flash the image to the SD card. Use one of the image-writing tools named above, or dd if you know how to use it safely. Confirm the target drive carefully: writing an image erases the selected card.
  3. Back up and flash the matching bootloader files. Boot Android and use the device’s root-script mechanism to back up both ABL partitions, following the exact guide for your model. Copy both backups to a PC. Only then flash the ROCKNIX ABL files that match your handheld’s SoC.
  4. Open the boot menu and select the right options. Follow your model’s instructions to enter its boot menu, choose the device model and select Linux boot mode. Menu names and button sequences are device-specific.
  5. Start Armada and finish Steam setup. Boot from the prepared card and complete Steam’s first-run setup when prompted.

Why “under five minutes” is not a reliable end-to-end estimate

The official instructions describe separate image-flashing, bootloader, boot-menu and first-run steps; they do not promise the entire process finishes in under five minutes. The guide also says the screen may stay black for up to 60 seconds before Steam appears, and a similar wait may happen again after first-run setup. Actual elapsed time depends on the handheld, the card, the image-writing process and whether you need to troubleshoot a device-specific step.

What to expect from Steam, FEX and Proton

Armada’s overview says FEX and CachyOS Proton 11 are set up out of the box, so users can install many games through Steam. That describes the intended workflow, not universal compatibility. It does not establish that every Steam game works, that anti-cheat-dependent games will run, or that performance will match a Steam Deck. Check the project’s current documentation for game-specific information rather than assuming a game will work because Steam launches.

Is Armada the right choice for your handheld?

  • It may suit you if your exact device and display variant are supported, you want a Steam-focused Linux environment, and you are comfortable backing up data and following model-specific bootloader instructions.
  • Pause or choose another approach if your model is not clearly listed, you cannot confirm the correct SoC files, or you are not prepared for bootloader changes and possible data loss.
  • Consider the storage approach before starting: the documented route here boots Armada from an SD card, while the project also describes optional internal installation alongside Android. Consult the current device-specific documentation before attempting an internal install.
