How to Install ArchiveBox on an Ubuntu VPS in India

A practical guide to deploying ArchiveBox on an Ubuntu VPS in India, with Docker Compose first, sizing guidance, bare-metal alternatives and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can install ArchiveBox on an Ubuntu VPS in India using the same documented steps used elsewhere: choose a supported CPU architecture, prepare enough memory and storage, then deploy with Docker Compose. ArchiveBox’s project recommends Compose for setup and updates. Its installation guidance supports Ubuntu on amd64 and arm64, lists 1 GB RAM as the minimum and recommends 2 GB or more. The instructions below are documented project procedures, not a deployment test.

What to check before creating the VPS

The official installation guidance is based on Ubuntu, CPU architecture and resources—not the server’s country. It does not identify an India-specific package source, command or prerequisite. Choose an Ubuntu VPS with a supported architecture and resources suited to the amount of content you expect to archive.

Check Project guidance What it means
Operating system and CPU Ubuntu on amd64 or arm64 Confirm the VPS image and architecture before following the install steps. The Docker image is also published for Linux amd64 and arm64.
Memory 1 GB minimum; 2 GB or more recommended These are project recommendations, not a guarantee that every workload will run well at the minimum.
Swap for a small VPS At least 4 GB swap on a 1 GB VPS before full default crawls Follow the project’s current installation guidance for swap configuration; this article does not prescribe provider-specific steps.
Storage No fixed capacity is specified Capacity depends on what and how much you archive. The project recommends filesystems with compression and/or deduplication, such as ZFS or BTRFS, as an efficiency measure rather than an installation requirement.

ArchiveBox says Chrome-based archiving can be disabled with CHROME_ENABLED=False or its USE_CHROME alias to reduce crawl-time memory pressure. That changes the available capture behavior; consult the current project documentation before changing extractor settings. ArchiveBox installation guidance

Recommended installation: Docker Compose

The project recommends Docker Compose for its setup and update experience and included extras. Use a current Ubuntu VPS with Docker Engine or Docker Desktop and Docker Compose v2 available. The official Docker deployment documentation provides this quickstart structure:

  1. Create a directory for the Compose deployment and its data:

    mkdir -p ~/archivebox/data && cd ~/archivebox
  2. Download the Compose configuration from the official repository:

    curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ArchiveBox/docker-archivebox/main/docker-compose.yml -o docker-compose.yml
  3. Pull the image and start the service:

    docker compose pull
    docker compose up -d --wait
  4. Open http://YOUR_VPS_HOST_OR_IP/admin/ in a browser and complete the setup wizard. Replace the example host with the hostname or IP you use to reach the VPS. The Quickstart says to continue through the wizard if BASE_URL is not configured.

  5. Add an initial page from the running service, substituting the URL you want to archive:

docker compose exec archivebox archivebox add 'https://example.com'

These commands follow the project’s documented Docker deployment flow. Check the current Docker repository before running them: its Compose file and image configuration can change. The project’s Quickstart documents the remote admin setup and first-URL workflow.

Can you install ArchiveBox on Ubuntu without Docker?

Yes. The project documents an apt-based route and a Python uv route. These are alternatives to the recommended Compose setup and require you to manage the host installation and dependencies directly.

Apt-based installation

The installation page currently documents a third-party apt repository on its dev channel. It characterizes the apt package as a thin wrapper around the normal Python installation flow. Review the live instructions before executing these commands because the channel and instructions may evolve.

echo 'deb [trusted=yes] https://archivebox.github.io/debian-archivebox dev main' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/archivebox.list
sudo apt update
sudo apt install archivebox

mkdir -p ~/archivebox/data
cd ~/archivebox/data
archivebox init
sudo archivebox install
archivebox add 'https://example.com'

archivebox init initializes a collection. The subsequent sudo archivebox install installs runtime dependencies for enabled extractors; the project says it uses apt for missing system dependencies while preserving ownership of the user-owned collection. See the current apt instructions before using this dev-channel repository.

Installing with uv

The project also documents installing ArchiveBox with uv, Python 3.13 and an explicit prerelease version range. After installing the package, initialize a collection and run archivebox install to resolve runtime dependencies. Use the exact version range and commands on the live installation page; they are not reproduced here because they may change. The get.archivebox.io shortcut runs the uv setup script, but by itself it does not initialize a collection, install runtime dependencies or start a server.

After installation: access and operational limits

The documented initial remote setup is the admin page at /admin/ on the hostname or IP you use to reach ArchiveBox. Do not treat the Compose quickstart as a complete public-internet security configuration: the cited setup instructions do not establish firewall, TLS, reverse-proxy or backup settings. Consult current deployment guidance and decide how to protect access and preserve your archive before exposing a service publicly.

Archive storage grows with the pages and assets you retain; the cited installation guidance does not specify a disk-size estimate for a particular collection. Plan capacity and backups around your own archive rather than relying on a universal VPS size. For the project’s overall setup context, see its latest documentation and official site.

If your goal is to capture a website rather than maintain an ArchiveBox server, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API. One GET request can return an image or PDF; its cookie-banner, popup and chat-widget cleanup is designed to make captures cleaner. See the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
