How to Install Apps on iPhones That Don’t Support iOS 16

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Older iPhones that can’t update to iOS 16 can still be useful, but app compatibility becomes more limited as developers raise their minimum iOS requirements. If the App Store says an app needs a newer version of iOS, that doesn’t always mean you’re completely out of options.

There are legitimate ways to keep using essential services on an older iPhone, including downloading apps from your purchase history, using older compatible versions when offered, relying on web apps, or accessing apps through Family Sharing. At the same time, some apps simply won’t work without newer system features or security support.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The safest approach is to use Apple-supported methods and avoid risky sideloading tools, fake “iOS update” claims, or modified app installers. These shortcuts can expose your device and accounts to malware, privacy issues, or broken apps, especially on hardware that no longer receives the latest updates.

Check Your iPhone’s Maximum Supported iOS Version

Before trying to install apps on an older iPhone, confirm the newest iOS version that model can actually run. App compatibility is tied to iOS requirements, not just the age of the phone, so knowing your ceiling helps you avoid wasting time on apps that will never install. If your iPhone cannot update to iOS 16, it may still support iOS 15, iOS 12, or another older release, and that difference can determine which apps remain available.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

To check what is currently installed, open Settings, go to General, then tap About. Look for iOS Version or Software Version. Next, go back to General and tap Software Update. If Apple offers an update, install it after backing up your iPhone and connecting to Wi-Fi and power. If the screen says your software is up to date, that usually means your device has reached the newest iOS version Apple provides for that model.

You can also identify your exact iPhone model from Settings > General > About by checking Model Name. This is more reliable than guessing by appearance, because several iPhones look similar but support different iOS versions. For example, an iPhone 7 tops out at iOS 15, while an iPhone 6 tops out at iOS 12. An iPhone 5s also tops out at iOS 12, which means many current apps may no longer install from the App Store.

iPhone model Maximum iOS version What it means for apps
iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus iOS 15 Many apps still work, but apps requiring iOS 16 or later will not install.
iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE 1st generation iOS 15 Good chance of older compatible app versions, depending on the developer.
iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus iOS 12 App support is much more limited, especially for banking, travel, and social apps.
iPhone 5s iOS 12 Only apps with older iOS 12-compatible builds are likely to install.
iPhone 5c and earlier iOS 10 or older Most modern App Store apps will be unavailable or unusable.

When an app listing says it requires iOS 16 or later, an unsupported iPhone cannot bypass that requirement through normal App Store installation. However, if the app developer still provides an older build, the App Store may offer to download the last compatible version after you attempt to install it from your purchased history. This only works for some apps, and only when Apple and the developer still make that older version available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Checking your maximum iOS version also helps with security expectations. Older iPhones may no longer receive full iOS updates, and some may receive only occasional security fixes or none at all. For apps that handle sensitive data, such as banking, password management, medical records, or workplace accounts, the app may require a newer iOS version to meet current security standards. In those cases, the limitation is intentional, and the safer path may be using the service in a browser or moving to newer hardware.

Download Compatible Apps from Your Purchased List

One of the most reliable ways to install apps on an older iPhone is through your App Store purchase history. If you downloaded an app in the past with the same Apple ID, the App Store may let you install the last version that still works with your iPhone’s iOS version. This is especially useful for devices stuck on iOS 12, iOS 13, iOS 14, or iOS 15 when the current App Store listing now requires iOS 16 or later.

To check, open the App Store on the older iPhone, tap your profile icon in the top-right corner, then choose Purchased. If you use Family Sharing, tap My Purchases. Search for the app you want, then tap the download cloud icon next to it. If Apple still has a compatible build available, you may see a message such as “Download an older version of this app?” Choose Download to install that older compatible version.

This method works best for apps you have already obtained before, including free apps. In App Store terms, “purchased” does not always mean you paid money; it also includes free apps you previously downloaded or added to your account. If the app is not in your purchase history, your older iPhone may show only the current version, which could be blocked by a newer iOS requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steps to try on the older iPhone

  1. Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and sign in with the Apple ID you used before.
  2. Open the App Store and tap your account picture.
  3. Go to Purchased, then My Purchases if prompted.
  4. Search for the app by name instead of browsing manually.
  5. Tap the cloud icon and accept the older-version prompt if it appears.

There are limits. Not every developer keeps older versions available, and some apps depend on online services that may no longer support older releases. A banking, messaging, streaming, ride-share, or smart-home app might install but fail to sign in, refuse to connect, or block use for security reasons. In other cases, key features may be missing because the older version cannot use newer frameworks, encryption requirements, or server APIs.

If the app does install, keep expectations realistic. You may be able to use basic functions, but you might not receive the latest interface changes, bug fixes, privacy improvements, or security updates. Avoid deleting a working older app unless you are prepared for the possibility that you may not be able to reinstall it later. App availability can change if the developer removes the app, discontinues old builds, or changes its minimum iOS requirement.

If the app does not appear in your Purchased list, confirm that you are using the correct Apple ID. Many people have older purchases tied to a different email address, a work account, or a family member’s account. Also check whether the app has changed names or been replaced by a separate new app listing. If it still cannot be found or downloaded, move on to other legitimate options such as Family Sharing, web apps, or a newer device that can run the current version.

Use an Older Device or Family Sharing to Get Apps

If an app does not appear when you search the App Store on an older iPhone, you may still be able to add it to your Apple ID using another compatible Apple device. This works best when the app still has an older version available for your unsupported iPhone, but Apple requires the app to be associated with your account before the “download an older version” prompt appears on the older device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if your iPhone is stuck on iOS 15 or earlier and an app now lists iOS 16 as the minimum requirement, you can try downloading the app first on a newer iPhone, iPad, or Mac signed in with the same Apple ID. After it has been added to your purchase history, return to the older iPhone, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, go to Purchased, and try downloading it from there. If the developer still provides a compatible build, the App Store may offer a message such as “Download an older version of this app?”

Using another device with your Apple ID

  1. Sign in to a newer iPhone, iPad, or compatible Mac using the same Apple ID used on the older iPhone.
  2. Open the App Store and download the app you want, even if only briefly.
  3. On the older iPhone, open the App Store and tap your account icon.
  4. Select Purchased, then search for the app in your purchase history.
  5. Tap the download icon and accept the older-version prompt if one appears.

You can also use Family Sharing if someone in your family group has already downloaded the app. On the older iPhone, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, choose Purchased, then select the family member’s name. If the app is shareable and has a compatible older version, it may be available to download from their purchase list. This can be useful for paid apps as well, since eligible purchases can be shared without buying the app again.

There are limits. Some apps are not eligible for Family Sharing, especially apps with certain subscriptions or in-app purchase models. Some developers remove older versions entirely, which means the App Store cannot provide a compatible download even if the app appears in your history. Apps that depend on modern server features, banking security, streaming DRM, health integrations, or smart-home frameworks may install but fail to sign in or function properly on old iOS versions.

Avoid asking someone to sign in to your iPhone with their Apple ID just to download apps, and do not share Apple ID passwords. Mixing accounts can cause update problems, iCloud confusion, and activation issues. If you borrow a newer device to add an app to your own account, use your own Apple ID, sign out afterward, and confirm that iCloud data such as photos, contacts, and messages is not being merged with someone else’s device.

Look for Web Apps and Browser-Based Alternatives

If an app no longer supports your iPhone’s highest available iOS version, check whether the service works in Safari or another browser before giving up. Many popular services maintain mobile websites that provide the core features of their apps, and these often work on older iPhones because they rely on web standards instead of the newest iOS app frameworks. This can be especially useful for email, banking, shopping, news, productivity tools, maps, taking services, social networks, and cloud storage.

  • Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
  • Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID

Start by opening Safari and visiting the service’s official website directly, such as the bank, retailer, social platform, or productivity service you already use. Sign in from the website, then test the features you need most: reading messages, uploading files, making payments, editing documents, viewing account details, or receiving support. Some sites will automatically show a mobile-friendly layout, while others may offer a “desktop site” option if the mobile version is too limited. In Safari, you can use the AA button in the address bar to request the desktop website when needed.

For websites you use often, add them to your Home Screen so they feel more like regular apps. In Safari, open the site, tap the Share button, choose Add to Home Screen, edit the name if you want, and tap Add. This creates an icon you can launch like an app. Some services also provide progressive web apps, which can save limited data locally, keep you signed in, and display a cleaner full-screen interface. Availability varies by website and by your iOS version, so older iPhones may not support every modern web app feature.

  • Good candidates: Gmail, Outlook webmail, Google Docs, Dropbox, OneDrive, online banking portals, shopping sites, calendars, news sites, and support dashboards.
  • Features that may be limited: push notifications, background syncing, offline access, camera-based scanning, Bluetooth accessories, Apple Watch integration, and advanced location features.
  • Security checks: use the official website address, look for HTTPS, avoid links from random search ads, and do not enter passwords into copycat pages.

Browser-based alternatives are not perfect replacements for every app, but they are often the safest and most practical option on an older iPhone. They do not require jailbreaking, installing unknown profiles, or downloading files from unofficial sites. If the website performs slowly, try closing unused tabs, clearing Safari website data for that site, or using a lighter version of the service if one is available. If a service’s website also requires a newer browser than your iPhone can run, that is a sign that the phone may no longer be suitable for that particular service.

Try Older App Versions When the App Store Offers Them

Some apps can still be installed on an older iPhone if the App Store has a compatible legacy version available. This usually happens when you try to download an app that you already obtained before, or that is available through a family member’s purchase history. If the current release requires iOS 16 or later, your iPhone may show a prompt such as “Download an older version of this app?” If you see that message, tap Download to install the last version that supports your installed iOS release.

This option is controlled by the app developer and Apple’s App Store system, so it does not appear for every app. For example, an iPhone running iOS 15 may be offered an older version of a banking, shopping, streaming, or productivity app, while an iPhone stuck on iOS 12 may not be offered anything at all. Apps that depend heavily on current security frameworks, payment systems, Bluetooth features, or server-side changes are less likely to keep working on older iOS versions.

How to check for an older compatible version

  1. Open the App Store on the older iPhone.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top-right corner.
  3. Go to Purchased, then choose My Purchases or a family member’s purchases if Family Sharing is enabled.
  4. Search for the app you want to install.
  5. Tap the cloud download icon next to the app.
  6. If the App Store offers an older compatible version, accept the prompt and wait for the installation to finish.

If you do not see the app in your purchased list, you may need to “acquire” it first on a newer iPhone, iPad, or Mac using the same Apple Account, if the app is still available and free or already purchased. After that, return to the older iPhone and check the purchased list again. This does not bypass the app’s requirements; it only gives the older iPhone a chance to request a legacy version if one exists.

Even when an older version installs successfully, it may have limits. The app might lack newer features, display warnings, or stop working if the developer shuts down support for older releases. Some services require the latest app version to sign in, stream content, sync data, or complete payments. For sensitive uses such as banking, password management, medical records, or two-factor authentication, an outdated app can also create security and reliability concerns.

  • Use older versions only from the App Store. This keeps the app tied to your Apple Account and Apple’s normal installation process.
  • Avoid downloading app files from websites. Random IPA files can be modified, expired, or incompatible, and may put your data at risk.
  • Do not trust tools that claim to force unsupported apps onto old iPhones. They often require unsafe profiles, account access, or jailbreaking.
  • Keep realistic expectations. If the developer no longer provides a compatible version, there is no legitimate setting that will make the current app run on unsupported iOS hardware.

When the older version option appears, it is one of the simplest ways to extend the useful life of an older iPhone. When it does not appear, the better next step is usually to look for a web version of the service, use another device for that app, or consider upgrading to an iPhone that supports a newer iOS release.

Avoid Unsafe Workarounds and Sideloading Claims

When an older iPhone cannot install a current App Store version, it is tempting to search for shortcuts such as “install any app on old iOS,” “force unsupported apps,” or “download IPA without App Store.” Be very cautious with these claims. On iPhones that cannot update to iOS 16, the safe options are limited to App Store downloads, previously purchased compatible versions, web apps, and services that still support your installed iOS version. Anything promising to bypass Apple’s compatibility checks should be treated with suspicion.

Many sites offer app files, configuration profiles, “enterprise certificates,” or desktop tools that claim to install modern apps on unsupported iPhones. These methods often fail because the app itself may require newer iOS frameworks that do not exist on your device. Even if the icon installs, the app may crash at launch, refuse sign-in, miss security features, or stop working after a certificate is revoked. Some downloads are also repackaged with unwanted changes, tracking, ads, or credential-stealing behavior.

Be especially careful with these offers

  • Random IPA download sites: They may host modified or outdated app files that are not verified by the App Store.
  • Profiles that ask for broad permissions: Configuration profiles can change network, certificate, VPN, or device management settings.
  • “No jailbreak needed” installers: Many rely on revoked certificates, aggressive ads, or unclear privacy practices.
  • Jailbreak-based fixes: Jailbreaking can reduce device security, break banking or streaming apps, and make troubleshooting harder.
  • Paid unlock services: No third party can legitimately make an app support an iOS version that the developer no longer supports.

Also avoid entering your Apple ID password into unofficial websites or installer tools. Your Apple ID protects purchases, iCloud data, photos, backups, device location, and payment information. If a tool says it needs your Apple ID to “sign” apps, understand exactly what it is doing before proceeding. For most users, that tradeoff is not worth the risk, especially on an older phone that may already be missing current security updates.

If you need an app for banking, health care, work authentication, travel, school, or messaging, use only trusted routes: the App Store, the developer’s official website, or a browser-based version of the service. For work or school apps, ask the organization’s IT team whether they still support your iOS version. For financial and medical apps, do not use copied installers or unofficial builds; these accounts are too sensitive to expose to unknown software.

A safe rule is simple: if the App Store says your iPhone is not compatible and no older version is offered, you usually cannot install that app in a reliable, legitimate way on that device. In that case, use the service in Safari if available, keep using an older compatible app while it still works, or consider moving that task to a newer iPhone, iPad, Mac, or trusted computer.

Know When Upgrading Your iPhone Is the Only Option

At some point, an older iPhone stops being a practical app device, even if it still turns on, makes calls, and handles basic tasks. If your iPhone cannot run iOS 16 and the apps you need now require iOS 16 or later, there may be no legitimate way to install or keep using them. This is especially common with banking apps, workplace tools, authentication apps, ride-share services, smart home apps, streaming platforms, and apps that depend on current security frameworks.

The clearest sign that upgrading is necessary is when the App Store does not offer a compatible older version and the app developer no longer supports your iOS release. In that situation, deleting and reinstalling the app can make things worse, because you may lose access to a version that was already installed. If an app is still working on your older iPhone, avoid removing it unless you have confirmed that it can be downloaded again from your Purchased list or replaced with a web version.

Situations Where an Upgrade Is Usually the Best Path

  • Your essential apps require iOS 16 or later: If you cannot access banking, school, work, healthcare, or two-factor authentication apps, workarounds are unlikely to be reliable or safe.
  • Security updates have ended: Older iPhones eventually stop receiving iOS security patches, increasing risk when browsing, checking email, or signing in to sensitive accounts.
  • Web alternatives are incomplete: Some services offer websites, but features such as push notifications, offline access, camera scanning, or biometric approval may require the app.
  • Performance is poor: If apps crash frequently, storage is always full, or the battery cannot hold a useful charge, staying on the old device may cost more time than it saves.
  • Accessories and services have moved on: Newer Apple Watch models, smart home devices, AirTags features, and some carrier services may require newer iOS versions.

Upgrading does not always mean buying the newest iPhone. A used or refurbished model that supports current iOS versions can be enough, and it may cost far less than a new flagship. For example, if you are moving from an iPhone 7, iPhone 6s, or first-generation iPhone SE, even a later refurbished iPhone can unlock access to modern App Store requirements, newer security updates, better battery life, and broader accessory support. When shopping, check Apple’s current iOS compatibility list and choose a model with several years of likely software support remaining.

Before replacing the phone, back it up with iCloud or a computer, confirm that photos and contacts are synced, and make sure you know your Apple ID password. Also review any apps that use separate login credentials, especially banking, password managers, and authenticator apps. Some services require a transfer process before you erase the old phone. Once your new iPhone is set up, keep the older device temporarily until you have confirmed that your accounts, messages, photos, and critical apps are working properly.

If the older iPhone is still useful, you can repurpose it instead of discarding it. It may still work as a music player, alarm clock, camera, offline s device, child’s Wi-Fi-only device, or backup phone for calls and texts if the battery is healthy. For app-heavy use, though, the realistic limit is the iOS version it can run. When developers and Apple have moved beyond that version, upgrading becomes the only dependable and secure option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install an app if the App Store says it requires iOS 16?

Sometimes, but only if the developer still offers an older compatible version and your Apple ID has already “purchased” or downloaded that app before. Open the App Store, go to your account’s Purchased list, and try downloading it from there. If no older version is offered, you cannot legitimately install that app on an iPhone that does not support iOS 16.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I get an app into my Purchased list if my old iPhone cannot download it directly?

You can use a newer iPhone, iPad, or a family member’s device with Family Sharing to download the app first using your Apple ID or shared purchases. After that, check the Purchased list on the older iPhone and see whether the App Store offers a compatible older version. This only works if the app developer still allows older versions to be downloaded.

Will older versions of apps still work properly on an unsupported iPhone?

They may work, but there are no guarantees. Older app versions can lose features, stop syncing, or fail to sign in if the service now requires a newer app or newer security standards. Banking, messaging, streaming, and work apps are especially likely to stop supporting outdated iOS versions over time.

Are web apps a good replacement for apps that need iOS 16?

For many services, yes. Websites for email, social networks, shopping, banking, cloud storage, and productivity tools may work in Safari even when the native app no longer supports your phone. You can also add many sites to the Home Screen from Safari, making them feel more like regular apps.

Should I use third-party tools, profiles, or sideloading sites to install newer apps on an old iPhone?

No. Sites claiming to force iOS 16 apps onto unsupported iPhones are often unsafe, unreliable, or designed to collect your Apple ID, payment details, or personal data. Configuration profiles, unofficial app stores, and modified app files can also create security and privacy risks. If the App Store, a web app, or an older compatible version will not work, upgrading to a newer iPhone is usually the only practical option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

If your iPhone can’t run iOS 16, your best options are to download older compatible versions from your purchase history, use lightweight web apps where available, and keep the device updated to the newest iOS version it does support. These methods are legitimate, safer, and more reliable than trying to bypass Apple’s restrictions.

When an app no longer offers a compatible version or requires newer security features, it may be time to use an alternative service or consider upgrading to a newer iPhone. Avoid unofficial app stores, suspicious profiles, and jailbreaking unless you fully understand the security and stability risks.
