AppImages usually do not need to be installed. Download the file, make it executable, then run it:
chmod +x MyApp.AppImage
./MyApp.AppImage
This user-level process works on many Linux distributions. Desktop integration, FUSE support, architecture, graphics drivers, and application-specific requirements can still affect whether a particular AppImage runs.

What is an AppImage?
An AppImage is a self-contained Linux application bundle. It packages an application and many of its libraries inside one executable file, with the goal of working across multiple desktop distributions. Fedora describes the format as an internal filesystem containing application binaries and libraries (Fedora documentation).
Unlike a .deb or .rpm, downloading an AppImage normally does not register software with your package manager. It is closer to a portable application: keep the file in your home directory, make it executable, and launch it. Root access is normally unnecessary.

“Portable” does not mean universally compatible. The host kernel, CPU architecture, graphics stack, permissions, desktop environment and bundled runtime assumptions can still matter.
Before you run an AppImage
Download from a source you trust
Prefer the application developer’s official website, release page or repository. Use a catalog only when you can verify the publisher. An AppImage is executable code, not a document; the .AppImage extension does not prove that its contents are safe. The AppImage project advises running files only when you trust their source (project security guidance).
- Confirm that the download is an AppImage rather than a shell script or unrelated archive.
- Use HTTPS and verify a published SHA-256 checksum or signature when available.
- Do not run it with
sudounless the application’s own documentation gives a specific administrative procedure.
Choose the right architecture
Most Intel and AMD 64-bit computers use x86_64 or amd64. Many ARM systems use aarch64 or arm64; older 32-bit systems may use i386 or x86. A mismatched architecture cannot be fixed with chmod.

uname -m
Put it in a stable location
You can run an AppImage from Downloads, but a stable path avoids breaking launchers when that directory is cleaned. For example:
mkdir -p ~/Applications
mv ~/Downloads/MyApp.AppImage ~/Applications/
chmod +x ~/Applications/MyApp.AppImage
~/Applications/MyApp.AppImage
Run an AppImage graphically
- Open your file manager and locate the downloaded file.
- Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Open Permissions and enable the option equivalent to Allow executing file as program. Wording differs among GNOME Files/Nautilus, Nemo, Caja, Dolphin and PCManFM.
- Close the dialog and double-click the file.
- If an integration helper asks what to do, choose Run once to launch without integration, or Integrate and run to add a menu entry and move the file when supported.
If double-clicking opens the file as text or appears to do nothing, use the terminal method; it exposes the actual error.

Run an AppImage from the terminal
Open a terminal, change to the file’s directory, set the execute bit, and launch it:
cd ~/Downloads
chmod +x MyApp.AppImage
./MyApp.AppImage
For spaces in a filename, quote the path:
chmod +x "My App.AppImage"
./"My App.AppImage"
You can type ./ and press Tab for shell completion. A wildcard such as ./MyApp*.AppImage is safe only when it matches one intended file.

Run, organize, integrate: what “install” means
- Run: execute the file wherever it currently resides.
- Organize: move it to a directory such as
~/Applicationsor~/AppImages. - Integrate: create an application-menu entry, icon and launcher metadata.
- System install: usually unnecessary; do not copy an AppImage into
/usr/binas a default procedure.
Running does not automatically create a menu entry. The AppImage user guide treats integration as optional (running and integration guide).
Make an AppImage appear in the application menu
Use an integration helper
AppImageLauncher can prompt for integration, move files into ~/Applications, and provide supported update or removal actions. Availability and maintenance differ by distribution, so obtain it from a current, trusted project or distribution source rather than adding an old repository blindly.

Create a launcher manually
Move the AppImage first, then create a desktop-entry file:
mkdir -p ~/.local/share/applications
nano ~/.local/share/applications/myapp.desktop
Use absolute paths in the file:
[Desktop Entry]
Name=My App
Exec=/home/USERNAME/Applications/MyApp.AppImage
Icon=/home/USERNAME/Applications/myapp.png
Type=Application
Categories=Utility;
Terminal=false
Replace USERNAME, names and paths. If your desktop environment requires executable desktop entries, run:
chmod +x ~/.local/share/applications/myapp.desktop
The menu may refresh immediately, after a delay, or only after restarting the desktop shell or logging out and in. Some applications include their own icon and desktop metadata; others do not.
Fix an AppImage that will not open
Run it in a terminal first:
cd /path/to/the/file
./MyApp.AppImage
Use the reported message to choose the relevant branch.
“Permission denied”
Set the execute bit:
chmod +x MyApp.AppImage
./MyApp.AppImage
If it still fails, the file may be on a noexec mount or an external, NTFS, FAT or network filesystem whose execution permissions do not behave like a native Linux filesystem. Move it to your home directory:

“AppImages require FUSE”
Many AppImages mount their embedded filesystem through FUSE. Package names and setup vary by distribution. Older Ubuntu, Debian and derivatives may provide libfuse2; Ubuntu 24.04 uses the renamed libfuse2t64 package according to the official troubleshooting guide. Check the instructions for your release at AppImage’s FUSE troubleshooting page.
# Older Debian/Ubuntu-family releases where this package exists:
sudo apt-get install libfuse2
# Ubuntu 24.04:
sudo apt install libfuse2t64
Do not assume FUSE 3 alone resolves every AppImage issue. If installing the required userspace library is impossible, a type 2 AppImage may support extraction:
./MyApp.AppImage --appimage-extract
./squashfs-root/AppRun
--appimage-extract-and-run is another possible option:
./MyApp.AppImage --appimage-extract-and-run
These switches are not guaranteed for every AppImage and are troubleshooting fallbacks, not the normal launch method.
The architecture is wrong
Compare the host and file:
uname -m
file MyApp.AppImage
Download a build matching the host, such as x86_64 for a typical 64-bit Intel/AMD PC or aarch64 for many 64-bit ARM systems.

“No such file or directory” although the file is visible
Check the exact name and permissions:
ls -l
file MyApp.AppImage
Use ./ and quote spaces:
./"My App.AppImage"
The message can also indicate that an interpreter or library inside the bundle is unavailable, or that the architecture is incompatible.
Electron sandbox errors
Some Electron AppImages cannot start because their embedded sandbox requirements are not met. Follow the application developer’s guidance. Do not routinely add --no-sandbox: disabling a sandbox reduces protection and should be considered only for trusted software when the developer documents it and no safer package or updated build is available.
The program starts and then crashes
- Run it from a terminal and record the error.
- Download a newer build from the official source.
- Try the developer’s DEB, RPM, Flatpak or Snap package if available.
- Use a clean configuration only when the application documentation recommends that test.
- Avoid replacing random system libraries based on unverified forum commands.
Graphics drivers, Wayland/X11 differences, host integration libraries, outdated builds and application bugs can all cause runtime crashes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe menu entry is missing
This is normal for an unintegrated AppImage. Launch the file directly, use an integration helper, or create a .desktop entry as described above.
How to update an AppImage
Updates are usually manual: download the newer file from the publisher, verify it, move it to your stable application directory, preserve executable permission, and replace the old version. Some applications have built-in update support, and some publishers provide compatible AppImage update metadata; neither is universal. Integration helpers can offer update actions only for supported files.
How to uninstall an AppImage
For a manually run file, delete it:
rm ~/Applications/MyApp.AppImage
Remove a manually created launcher separately:
rm ~/.local/share/applications/myapp.desktop
Application data may remain in ~/.config/, ~/.local/share/ or ~/.cache/. Identify the application-specific directory in its documentation before deleting anything; removing the AppImage alone does not necessarily remove settings, profiles or caches.
AppImage versus other Linux formats
| Format | Best for | Main advantage | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| AppImage | Portable, user-local applications | One-file distribution; usually no root access | Manual integration and often manual updates |
| DEB/RPM | Distribution-managed software | Native package management and distribution integration | Distribution and version dependencies |
| Flatpak | Desktop apps with sandboxing | Consistent runtimes and desktop integration | Larger runtimes and additional tooling |
| Snap | Software in the Snap ecosystem | Managed updates and confinement options | Requires Snap infrastructure |
| Source build | Developers and advanced users | Maximum control | Highest setup and maintenance burden |
Prefer a repository package, Flatpak or Snap when automatic updates, deep system integration, device rules, codecs or distribution-managed security fixes are priorities. AppImage is useful when the developer officially distributes it, the application is absent from your repositories, or you want a user-local test without changing package databases.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Security note
Making an AppImage executable allows it to run with your user’s permissions. AppImages are not automatically sandboxed. Trust the publisher, verify checksums or signatures when provided, and never grant routine software root access. Firejail or another configured sandbox can restrict an AppImage, but sandboxing is optional and requires understanding its configuration (AppImage project launcher and security information).
