You can run some Android apps on a SteamOS handheld using Waydroid, an Android container for Linux. On Steam Deck, a community-maintained installer adds SteamOS-specific setup and can integrate a launcher with Game Mode. It is an unofficial, version-sensitive setup—not a Valve-supported Android feature—and the Deck installer should not be assumed to support every SteamOS handheld.
Check your device and SteamOS version first
The Steam Deck installer is specifically designed for the Deck. Before installing, check the installer’s current documentation for supported device and SteamOS configurations. A separate community bundle project likewise ties compatibility to specific SteamOS target configurations. Support can change, so do not treat compatibility with one handheld or build as proof that another will work.

Waydroid’s project documentation describes Android 13 variants and Android TV images in the Deck installer’s changelog. The separate bundle project describes Android 13 as its normal supported path and Android 16 as experimental. Those are project-specific options and status claims, not guarantees for every Waydroid installation.
Install Waydroid on Steam Deck
The Deck installer guide describes a setup using Desktop Mode, Konsole, a configured sudo password, and the project’s repository and script. Follow the current instructions in the installer guide rather than relying on copied commands: its branches, prerequisites, and supported SteamOS builds may change.

- In the installer guide, confirm that your SteamOS build and device are listed as supported, then review its prerequisites and warnings.
- Switch to Desktop Mode and open Konsole. Configure a
sudopassword if the guide requires one and you have not already done so. - Clone the repository and run the installer script using the exact commands in the current guide. Choose an Android image and Google-apps option only if offered and appropriate for your needs.
- Follow the guide’s checks to confirm Waydroid starts before installing apps.
Other SteamOS handhelds may be able to run Waydroid, but the Deck-specific installer is not evidence of support for them. Use device-specific documentation and verify compatibility with the exact operating system build before attempting installation.

Replace xyz.apk with the APK’s actual filename and provide a path if the file is not in the current directory. Waydroid also documents using F-Droid or the Play Store when the installed image includes GAPPS; having Waydroid installed alone does not establish that Google services are present. Launch from Desktop Mode or Game Mode
Waydroid supports launching installed apps from the desktop application menu. The Steam Deck installer also documents a Game Mode launcher entry and separate guides for sideloading apps and launching them directly from Game Mode. Use the installer’s current instructions for that integration; it is an installer-provided option, not a general SteamOS feature.

Check APK compatibility before troubleshooting further
An APK can install successfully on one Android device and still be incompatible with Waydroid on a SteamOS handheld. Architecture is an early check: Steam Deck uses an x86_64 environment, while many APKs found online are built only for ARM. Waydroid warns that “The apk files you will sometimes find on the internet tend to only have arm support, and will therefore not work on x86_64.” Check whether the app offers a compatible x86_64 build before trying another copy of the same ARM-only package.
Even with a compatible APK architecture, the reviewed project documentation does not establish broad compatibility for apps that depend on Play Integrity, DRM, or specialized device hardware. Do not assume those apps will work just because Waydroid starts.

Recover from update or setup problems
The Deck installer’s documentation warns that a SteamOS update can wipe the Waydroid setup and may require running the installer again. It also says a kernel change can leave the script waiting for a matching Binder module. After an operating-system update, check the project’s current compatibility notes before rerunning anything; if the required module is not available for your kernel, the installer may not proceed. Back up Android data you cannot afford to lose before updates or reinstalling.

If the problem began after a SteamOS update, check the installer’s current device, kernel, and module guidance rather than assuming the previous setup still applies.
Use a microSD card only if you need more storage
The Deck installer links instructions for configuring Waydroid storage on an SD card. A card is optional; the guide does not establish a required capacity or speed. Follow its storage instructions if you choose to move or configure Waydroid data there.
