How to Install Android Apps on a Chromebook and Fix Common Problems

Enable Google Play on a supported Chromebook, install Android apps, and identify whether a failed download is caused by compatibility, connectivity, or administrator policy.

To install Android apps on a Chromebook, first confirm that the model supports Google Play and that ChromeOS is up to date. Then enable Play Store in Settings and install the app from the Play Store. A Chromebook can support Android apps while still being incompatible with a particular app, and work or school policies may block Play Store access.

Check Chromebook support and update ChromeOS

Google Play is available on some, not all, Chromebook models. On the Chromebook, open Settings and look for Apps > Manage Google Play preferences. Google says that if this option is missing, the Chromebook does not work with Android apps. You can check Google’s Chromebook Help instructions for setup and supported-device guidance.

Before setting up Play Store, install any available ChromeOS updates. If the Chromebook belongs to a workplace or school, check with its administrator early: management policies may prevent users from adding Play Store or downloading Android apps.

Enable Google Play and install an app

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences. If the Chromebook displays a setup flow, select More when prompted and accept the Terms of Service. Screen labels can vary as ChromeOS settings change, so follow the wording shown on your device.
  2. Open the Play Store from the Launcher and search for the app you want.
  3. Select Install. If you already use the app on a phone or tablet, it does not necessarily appear on the Chromebook automatically; download it again on the Chromebook.

Some apps are not offered for Chromebooks or do not support a feature the Chromebook lacks. Having Play Store on the device does not guarantee that every Android app will install or work.

Troubleshoot by the message or symptom

“Manage Google Play preferences” is missing

Google identifies the missing setting as a sign that the Chromebook does not support Android apps. Check the device’s exact model against Google’s current compatibility information. If it is unsupported, a restart or settings change will not add Play Store support.

Play Store will not open, load, or keeps crashing

An app download fails

Restart the Chromebook and check the internet connection. For additional app-download steps, see Google Play Help’s Chromebook download troubleshooting.

An app does not appear in Chromebook Play Store search

The developer may not offer the app for Chromebooks or may have stopped supporting them. Ask the developer whether a Chromebook version is available.

“Your device is not compatible with this version”

This message means the specific Chromebook model is not compatible with that app. The app may require a feature the Chromebook does not have; Google gives GPS as an example. The limitation is specific to the app and device pairing, even if the Chromebook supports Play Store generally.

The Chromebook is grayed out on play.google.com

Google says a grayed-out Chromebook cannot install that app. Check that you are signed in to the intended Google account and have selected the right device. Google explains device selection and compatibility filtering in its guide to getting Android apps from Google Play.

A work or school Chromebook cannot enable Play Store

An administrator may have disabled Play Store or Android app downloads. Contact the organization’s administrator; users may not be able to change a managed-device restriction themselves.
