The official sources reviewed do not establish a separately installable Ubuntu CLI package. That does not rule out unrelated third-party tools with similar names.

The practical setup is to confirm Bash and curl are available, obtain your own ScreenshotMachine customer key, then run a Bash command that calls the screenshot API. ScreenshotMachine’s API documentation says a unique customer key is provided through its signup process. Do not publish your key in scripts or repositories.

Check Ubuntu for Bash and curl
Bash is the shell used in the example; curl sends the HTTP request. ScreenshotMachine’s reviewed materials do not specify Ubuntu versions, minimum requirements, or Ubuntu package-install commands. Check your release’s package guidance if either command is missing rather than assuming a version-specific installation procedure.

In a terminal, check whether both commands are available:
bash --version
curl --versionIf the commands print version information, the shell and HTTP client are present. If a command is not found, install or enable it using the package instructions for your Ubuntu release.
Get an API key and choose the capture settings
Obtain your customer API key through ScreenshotMachine’s account process. The screenshot endpoint is https://api.screenshotmachine.com/, and requests use HTTP GET query parameters. The requested page URL and customer key are required.
The documentation lists these options and defaults:

Call the screenshot API from Bash
Replace YOUR_CUSTOMER_KEY and the sample page URL with your own values. This example requests a full-length PNG and saves the response as shot.png. curl encodes query parameters supplied with -G and --data-urlencode, which avoids manually escaping characters in the target URL.

Confirm parameter names and any additional options against the current ScreenshotMachine API documentation before adapting the example. The documented defaults are a 120×90 image, desktop device, and JPG format; set the options explicitly when those defaults are not suitable.
To request a fixed viewport instead, choose a width and height within the documented limits, for example:

Use the separate PDF API when you need a PDF
ScreenshotMachine’s PDF service is separate from its screenshot endpoint. The official Bash/curl sample calls https://pdfapi.screenshotmachine.com, not the screenshot endpoint, and sends PDF options before writing the response to a local file. Do not treat a screenshot request’s endpoint or image-format parameters as interchangeable with the PDF service.

Use the official PDF example and its documented options at ScreenshotMachine’s PDF API documentation. The reviewed materials establish that it uses Bash/curl and redirects the returned PDF to an output file; check that page for the exact current parameters before running a request.

A command run locally can keep your customer key out of public HTML. If you make screenshot API calls from a public HTML page, ScreenshotMachine documents a hash safeguard: calculate an MD5 hash from the requested URL plus your secret phrase. When a secret phrase is set, requests with a missing or incorrect hash are ignored. Keep the secret phrase private; do not expose it in browser code. Follow the API documentation’s exact hash construction and parameter requirements.
Troubleshoot common problems
bash: command not foundorcurl: command not found: This is a local Ubuntu environment issue, not an API response. Confirm the relevant package or shell is installed for your Ubuntu release.- The saved response is an error image: ScreenshotMachine documents that invalid or incomplete requests can return an error image. Inspect the
X-Screenshotmachine-Responseheader for the error code. The documentation givesinvalid_urlas an example; check the target URL and request parameters. - Invalid or incomplete request: Verify that the customer key and page URL are included and that option values are accepted by the API. Use URL encoding for the page URL rather than assembling an unescaped query string.
- A public-page request is ignored: If you configured a secret phrase, make sure the request includes the correct hash. The documented safeguard ignores requests with a missing or incorrect hash.
