To install Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) on Windows 10, use Windows Settings or PowerShell to add only the tools you need. RSAT is available on Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise; for version 1809 and later, it is installed as an Optional Feature rather than through the old Control Panel workflow. You also need network access to the server and the appropriate permissions there. Note that Windows 10 version 22H2 reached the end of updates on October 14, 2025; see Microsoft’s Windows 10 lifecycle information and check the separate lifecycle for any LTSC edition.
What RSAT does
Remote Server Administration Tools are client-side utilities for managing Windows Server roles and features from a Windows computer. Microsoft groups them into Server Manager, Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-ins, PowerShell modules, and command-line tools. Installing RSAT adds management utilities to the client; it does not install a server role or grant permission to administer a remote service. Microsoft’s RSAT overview describes the tools and their management interfaces.

Check Windows 10 eligibility
Microsoft’s Windows 10 guidance specifies Pro or Enterprise, with the October 2018 cumulative update or later. Windows 10 Home cannot install RSAT. On Windows 10 version 1809 and later, RSAT is delivered as Windows capabilities and added through Optional Features. Microsoft’s RSAT support article covers the edition and installation-flow requirements.

Windows 10 version 22H2 stopped receiving updates on October 14, 2025. That lifecycle status is separate from whether RSAT can be installed: the steps below explain the RSAT mechanics, but organizations should assess operating-system support independently. LTSC releases have edition-specific lifecycle dates.

Install RSAT from Settings
- Sign in with an account that has administrator privileges on the Windows 10 PC.
- Open Settings > Apps > Optional features. On Windows 10 version 22H2 and later, the path may appear as Settings > System > Optional features.
- Select Add a feature, search for the RSAT component you need, and select Install. The precise wording or panel layout can vary by servicing level.
- After installation, open the tool from Server Manager’s Tools menu or Windows Tools.
For version 1809 and later, use Optional Features; older guides that direct you to Control Panel > Turn Windows features on or off describe the former installation flow.
Install a specific capability with PowerShell
PowerShell is useful when you want to inspect availability or install a known component directly. Open PowerShell as Administrator, then list RSAT capabilities and their states:

Get-WindowsCapability -Online | Where-Object Name -like 'RSAT*'
Use the exact capability name returned on your PC. For example, to install Active Directory Domain Services and Lightweight Directory Services tools:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Review the command output for installation status and whether a restart is needed; do not assume every machine will return the same result. Microsoft documents this method and the capability names in its RSAT installation guidance.

Choose tools for the task
RSAT is a collection of separate components, not one all-or-nothing application. Install the capability that matches the Windows Server service you need to manage. Examples include:
- Active Directory users, computers, domains, or LDS: Active Directory Domain Services and Lightweight Directory Services tools.
- Group Policy: Group Policy Management tools.
- Name resolution: DNS Server tools.
- IP address allocation: DHCP Server tools.
- Cluster administration: Failover Cluster tools. Microsoft’s capability reference lists File Services tools as a dependency for this component.
Components may provide an MMC console, PowerShell module, command-line utility, or several interfaces. Availability and dependencies can differ by Windows version, so enumerate capabilities on the target PC and check Microsoft’s Features on Demand capability reference before planning a deployment.

Install RSAT in an offline or managed environment
When the client cannot obtain the feature payload through Windows Update or WSUS, Microsoft documents using DISM with a Features on Demand source. For an offline image or restricted network, provide /Source pointing to a matching Features on Demand repository or mounted Languages and Optional Features media. The source must match the target Windows release and architecture; the documented mapping associates Windows 10 version 2004 and later with the Windows 10 version 2004 Features on Demand ISO. Consult Microsoft’s Features on Demand deployment documentation for the applicable media mapping and DISM procedure.
Connect to and manage the server
Open the relevant RSAT utility from Server Manager or Windows Tools, then use that tool’s server-selection workflow to connect to the intended host. The remote Windows Server must be reachable over the network, and your account must have the rights required for the service you are administering. Local installation alone does not configure network access or remote authorization.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Troubleshoot common RSAT problems
- RSAT is missing from Optional Features: Confirm the PC runs Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise and a sufficiently current release. Microsoft’s Windows 10 RSAT path begins with version 1809.
- The capability you need is not listed: Run
Get-WindowsCapability -Onlineand check the Microsoft capability reference. Not every tool is available on every Windows release. - Installation or download fails on a managed PC: Check the organization’s Windows Update or WSUS policy and its configured Features on Demand source. For offline installation, use matching media and the documented DISM source option.
- The console opens but cannot manage the server: Check network reachability, confirm the selected host, and verify your permissions on the remote server.
- A guide tells you to use Control Panel: For Windows 10 version 1809 and later, install RSAT through Optional Features or Windows capability commands instead.
