How to Install and Use Proton on Steam Deck and Linux

Steam manages Proton for most Steam Deck and Linux users. Learn how to enable compatibility, change Proton for one game, install a custom build, and troubleshoot launch failures.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Steam Deck and desktop Linux, the simplest way to install Proton is to let Steam download and manage its built-in compatibility tools. Enable Steam Play compatibility for Windows games, then choose a different Proton version for a specific title only if the default does not work. Most users do not need a separate Proton installer.

What Proton does—and what it does not do

Valve describes Proton as “a tool for use with the Steam client which allows games which are exclusive to Windows to run on the Linux operating system.” It combines Wine with additional components so Steam can run many Windows games on Linux. Steam normally supplies and updates Proton itself, so downloading a separate installer is unnecessary for most players. Valve’s Proton project recommends using the version provided by the Steam client.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters when you are deciding what to install. Proton is not generally a standalone app that you download, open, and point at a game. It is a compatibility tool managed through Steam. For ordinary use, install Steam, enable or use Steam Play compatibility, and let Steam fetch the tool it needs. Manually installing a separate build is an advanced option for development, testing, or a particular workaround—not the first step for a new Steam Deck or Linux setup.

Proton is distinct from Steam Linux Runtime. Steam Play is the client’s umbrella for compatibility tools; Proton is the compatibility tool for running Windows games, while Steam Linux Runtime provides a container framework. Valve’s runtime documentation notes that Steam Linux Runtime 4.0 is used for Proton 11 or newer. A runtime download is therefore not simply another name for Proton. If you see a runtime component in Steam’s downloads, that does not mean you have to replace it with a different Proton installer. Steam Runtime documentation

How do I install Proton on Steam Deck?

For the ordinary Steam Deck setup, connect to the internet, install or update Steam games normally, and let Steam fetch the compatibility components it needs. Proton is integrated into Steam rather than installed as a separate Deck application. When a Windows game needs a compatibility tool, Steam manages the download and lets you select a tool for that game. You do not need to start by downloading Proton from a third-party website or building it yourself.

The available sources do not establish a stable, current Gaming Mode click path or exact menu labels for every SteamOS client revision. Look in the game’s properties and compatibility controls rather than relying on an older set of screenshots or menu wording. If a tool is not yet available, allow Steam to complete its download or update before launching the title again.

In practical terms, begin by installing the game in Steam and giving Steam time to finish any associated tool download. If the game starts, you do not need to change anything. If it does not, open that game’s properties and look for its compatibility controls; you can then select a different Steam-provided tool for that title. This per-game approach is preferable to changing a global setting just to test one game, because it keeps the experiment focused on the title that is having trouble.

Steam Deck support should not be read as a guarantee that every Windows game, online feature, or anti-cheat system works. Proton has broad API coverage, and Valve says most games work out of the box, but compatibility work continues and individual results vary. If a specific game is the reason you are setting up Proton, treat its launch behavior as something to verify rather than assuming that all titles behave alike.

How do I enable Proton on Linux?

On desktop Linux, install and open the Steam client, then find its Steam Settings area for Compatibility or Steam Play. The label can vary between client revisions. Enable compatibility for Windows games there and select a Steam-provided Proton tool if Steam offers a choice. Steam’s tool list and settings are the recommended route for most users. Proton project guidance and Steam for Linux

Steam usually obtains the needed tool when you enable compatibility or launch a game that requires it. Wait for downloads or updates to finish; an incomplete tool installation can look like a game-specific failure. After the download, try launching a title. If it works, leave the working configuration in place instead of changing versions without a reason.

If you cannot find the same labels shown in an online guide, do not assume the feature has disappeared. Steam’s wording and layout can change between client revisions, and the sources available for this guide do not verify a fixed, current set of menu names. Look for the Compatibility or Steam Play controls in Steam Settings, and use the game’s own Properties for a title-specific override. The important distinction is whether you are changing the general compatibility setting or the tool assigned to one game.

If Steam itself will not run on your Linux installation, that is a separate problem from installing Proton. The Steam for Linux repository states that, starting 2025-08-15, the Steam client requires glibc 2.31 or newer. This is a client prerequisite, not a Proton-specific minimum or an installation step for Proton. Check the requirements for the Steam client and your distribution before trying to troubleshoot a game’s compatibility tool. Steam for Linux repository

How do I force a game to use Proton?

Use a per-game compatibility override when a title does not launch with its current selection or when you want to test another Steam Play tool without changing the system-wide default. The precise text of the control can vary, but the game’s Properties is the relevant place.

  1. In Steam, open the game’s Properties.
  2. Open the game’s compatibility controls, sometimes presented under Steam Play or Compatibility.
  3. Enable the option to force the use of a specific compatibility tool, if shown.
  4. Choose a Proton version from the available list, then close Properties and launch the game.
  5. If the game still fails, try the default or another Steam-supplied version and note which tool was selected when reproducing the issue.

This override applies to that title; it does not make the chosen Proton version a universal setting for every game. It is useful both when you are trying to get one game to launch and when you want a controlled comparison: keep the game the same, change its selected tool, and see whether the result changes. If changing the tool makes the game worse, return to the prior selection or the default rather than assuming the newest or oldest option must be better.

Valve documents per-game launch options and Steam Play tool selection in its Proton documentation. Do not confuse a launch option with a compatibility tool selection: launch options add command-line or environment settings for a game, while the compatibility controls choose which tool Steam uses to run it. You may use both for troubleshooting, but change one thing at a time so you can tell what affected the result.

Which Proton version should I choose?

Start with Steam’s default or recommended choice. If the game fails or behaves differently than expected, test another Steam-provided version on that title through its per-game compatibility controls. There is no universally best Proton version established for all games, and compatibility can vary from one title to another. The research for this guide does not establish a current named-game pass/fail list or a universal winner, so avoid treating a version recommendation for one game as a rule for the rest of your library.

The three practical paths differ in ease, update source, and effort. The default Steam-managed tool is the simplest and keeps updates within Steam. Another Steam-supplied tool is a low-effort, game-specific test. A custom local build gives you more control, but involves manual placement, a client restart, and more responsibility for maintenance. Choose the least complicated path that addresses the problem you actually have.

Approach Setup and updates When it makes sense Trade-off
Steam-managed default Proton Steam installs and manages the bundled tool. Best starting point for most games and users. Does not guarantee every game will work.
Another Steam-provided Proton version Select it as a per-game compatibility override in the game’s Properties. Testing a different tool for a particular game. Requires title-by-title testing; a change is not a universal fix.
Custom local Proton build Install a compatible build manually or use the documented build installation route, then restart Steam. Development, testing, or a specific workaround that calls for a custom build. More setup and maintenance; not the ordinary installation path.

Valve says Proton has broad API coverage and that most games work out of the box, while also noting that compatibility work continues. That broad description is not a promise for an individual game, graphics configuration, or anti-cheat system. The cited Steamworks documentation does not provide a current named-game pass/fail list. Steamworks Proton documentation

For a useful comparison, note the selected tool and the exact symptom before switching. A game that fails to start, one that starts but has a graphics issue, and one with an online or anti-cheat problem may have different causes. A version change is a test, not proof that Proton as a whole is broken or that another version will fix every layer. If you find a working configuration for one game, keep that override limited to that game.

Installing a custom local Proton build

Use a local build only when you have a specific reason to test or run one. Valve’s documented manual location is ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/. Create a directory there for the tool and place the build’s redistributable files inside it. Restart the Steam client so it can discover the added tool, then select it in Steam Play or the game’s compatibility settings. Valve’s installation guidance

  1. Obtain a redistributable Proton build appropriate to your purpose. This route is for a custom or development need; it is not required for normal Steam-managed Proton.
  2. Create the compatibilitytools.d directory under ~/.steam/root/ if it does not already exist.
  3. Place the build in its own directory under compatibilitytools.d, preserving the package’s expected directory structure.
  4. Restart Steam. Merely copying files while the client is running may leave the new tool undiscovered until it is restarted.
  5. Open Steam Play or the game’s compatibility controls and select the newly detected tool.

The location above is Valve’s documented manual location; it is not a promise that every Steam library, install, or distribution uses identical paths for all game files. Avoid relying on old examples that point into a particular library directory, since Steam library layouts differ. Keep the build’s expected directory structure intact rather than flattening or renaming its contents arbitrarily.

Valve also documents make install as an automated installation route for a Proton build you have built yourself. Building Proton from source is an advanced workflow, not the normal way to install it for gaming. If you do not need a locally built or custom tool for development, testing, or a specific compatibility workaround, use the Steam-managed versions instead; they require less setup and are the route Valve recommends for most users.

Where is my Proton log?

For a failed launch, a Proton log is a practical first diagnostic. Open that game’s launch options and enter PROTON_LOG=1 %command%, then launch the game again. Valve documents the default output filename pattern as steam-$APPID.log in your home directory. You can set PROTON_LOG_DIR to direct logs elsewhere. Proton runtime options and Proton FAQ

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The sequence matters: enable logging for the affected game, launch it again to produce a fresh log, then look in your home directory for a file named using that game’s Steam app ID. If you choose to redirect logs, PROTON_LOG_DIR sets the destination. The log is an output file for troubleshooting; it is not a report that Steam automatically sends to Valve, and enabling it does not itself repair the game.

A log can help identify where startup failed, but it is diagnostic output rather than an automatic fix. Before posting it publicly or attaching it to a project issue, check for private information such as account details or personal paths. When asking for help, include the game, the selected Proton tool, what you expected, what actually happened, and the relevant log details. Do not assume the log proves a specific diagnosis without interpreting the output.

What to try when a Windows game will not launch

  1. Confirm the selected tool. Check the game’s compatibility setting and make sure the intended tool is selected. If you set a per-game override, verify that it applies to the title you are testing.
  2. Wait for Steam to finish. Let Steam complete any Proton installation or update before retrying. An unfinished download can make a tool appear unavailable or make a launch attempt misleading.
  3. Test a different Steam-supplied version. Apply it only to the affected game, then launch again. Record whether the result changes. Revert to the previous or default version if the test does not help.
  4. Collect a log. Add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to that game’s launch options and inspect the resulting file in your home directory, or use PROTON_LOG_DIR to choose another location.
  5. Investigate the relevant layer. If the log or symptom points to graphics or Vulkan, consult current instructions for your Linux distribution and GPU vendor. Driver requirements depend on the hardware, distribution, and game; dated package commands should not be treated as universal.

Compatibility is title-specific. Broad API coverage and the fact that many games work out of the box do not mean that all Windows games, online services, or anti-cheat systems will work. The sources used here do not support a current list of named titles that pass or fail, so verify the game you care about and troubleshoot its observed behavior rather than relying on an unsupported blanket claim.

For a targeted experiment with supported Direct3D paths, Valve documents PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%, which uses OpenGL-based wined3d instead of Vulkan-based DXVK. This is not a general performance improvement or a guaranteed fix. Try it only when you are investigating a relevant graphics issue, and compare the result with the previous launch. Valve says runtime options do not permanently change the Wine prefix; removing the option returns behavior to its previous setting. Proton runtime options

Linux client requirement to know about

If Steam itself will not run on a Linux system, distinguish the client’s system requirements from Proton’s. The Steam for Linux repository states that, starting 2025-08-15, the Steam client requires glibc 2.31 or newer. This is a client prerequisite, not a Proton-specific minimum or an installation step for Proton. Steam for Linux repository

Graphics-driver needs are separate again: they vary by GPU, distribution, and game. If a Vulkan or driver problem is indicated, use the current instructions from your distribution and GPU vendor rather than copying a dated package command from an old Proton guide. No single package command or driver requirement is established here as universal across Linux systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to download Proton separately for Steam Deck?

Usually not. Proton is integrated with Steam, and Valve recommends that most users use the version supplied by the Steam client. Let Steam install or update the compatibility tool it needs.

How do I enable Proton on Linux?

In Steam, look in Settings for the Compatibility or Steam Play controls and enable compatibility for Windows games. Exact labels can change between client revisions. Steam can then obtain its supplied tools as needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I force one game to use a different Proton version?

Open that game’s Properties, find its compatibility controls, enable the option to force a specific compatibility tool if available, and select a Proton version. The override applies to that title, not every game.

Where does Proton save its log?

Add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game’s launch options and launch it again. The default filename pattern is steam-$APPID.log in your home directory. Set PROTON_LOG_DIR if you want logs somewhere else.

Does changing Proton versions guarantee a game will work?

No. Compatibility varies by title, and a different Steam-provided version is a troubleshooting test rather than a universal fix. Steam’s broad compatibility coverage does not guarantee every game, graphics setup, or anti-cheat system will work.

Should I build Proton from source to install it?

Not for ordinary gaming. A custom local build is an advanced option for development, testing, or a specific workaround. Most users should start with Steam-managed Proton; a local build requires correct placement and a Steam restart before selection.

The Bottom Line

For most Steam Deck and Linux users, Steam-managed Proton is the right starting point: enable Steam Play compatibility, allow Steam to install its tool, and change the selected version only for a game that needs testing. Use a local build only for a specific advanced need. If a title fails, check its per-game tool, collect a Proton log, and investigate the relevant game or driver issue rather than assuming every Proton setup is broken.
