MystiQ is a free, GPL-3.0 Qt5/C++ graphical front end for FFmpeg. Install it from your distribution’s repository when possible, then use its presets or editable FFmpeg parameters for audio and video conversion. As of August 18, 2026, the official Releases page identifies v20.03.23 as the latest tagged release.
What MystiQ does
MystiQ provides a graphical interface; FFmpeg performs the actual decoding, encoding, filtering, muxing and format conversion. The formats and codecs available therefore depend on the FFmpeg build installed on your system. MystiQ also uses SoX for some audio-processing features.
A container holds streams, while a codec encodes those streams. MP4, MKV, WebM, AVI, MOV, WAV and OGG are containers or file formats; H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP9 and AV1 are video codecs; AAC, Opus, MP3, FLAC and Vorbis are audio codecs. “MP4 to MP3” normally means removing the video stream and encoding the remaining audio as MP3, not converting one video container into another.

Check prerequisites first
- A Linux desktop environment and an architecture supported by your distribution or release asset.
- FFmpeg, which does the conversion.
- MystiQ itself.
- SoX if you need audio-speed or related processing features.
- Desktop notification libraries if you want completion notifications.
Identify your distribution and architecture, then verify FFmpeg before diagnosing MystiQ:

Install MystiQ from distribution repositories
Debian and Ubuntu
Debian currently provides MystiQ in stable and unstable, including packages for architectures such as amd64, arm64, armhf, i386, ppc64el, riscv64 and s390x. Install it when the package is present in your enabled repositories:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install mystiqUbuntu availability depends on the release, architecture and enabled repository components; the package may be in Universe. A distribution package can be older than upstream, which is normal for maintained system software. Debian’s package metadata lists FFmpeg and Qt5-related dependencies. Check Debian’s package page or your Ubuntu package index before assuming availability.

sudo dnf install mystiqThe installation command is conditional: run it only if a current package is returned. The upstream INSTALL file contains Fedora 30 and 31 instructions that are historical.
Arch Linux
pacman -Ss mystiq
sudo pacman -S mystiqUse the second command only when an official repository package is found. The old upstream instructions configure a custom repository with SigLevel = Never; disabling signature verification is not an appropriate modern default. If MystiQ is available only through an unofficial build script, review its source and maintenance status before installing it.
openSUSE
zypper search mystiq
sudo zypper install mystiqAgain, install only a package found for your current release. The upstream Leap 15.1, Leap 15.2 and Tumbleweed repository commands are legacy examples, not guaranteed current instructions.
Install an official release asset or AppImage
If your distribution has no suitable package, use the project’s official Releases page. Select the Linux asset matching your CPU architecture. The page mentions an improved GNU/Linux AppImage in v20.03.23, but asset filenames can change, so do not guess one from an old article.

./MystiQ*.AppImageCommon failures include a missing executable bit, an incomplete download, an architecture mismatch and missing FUSE compatibility support. FUSE package names vary by distribution and release, so identify your system before installing one. If the runtime supports extraction, this fallback avoids the FUSE mount:

./MystiQ*.AppImage --appimage-extractRun the extracted application from the resulting directory. AppImages do not always create a desktop launcher automatically, and updates are generally manual.
Compile MystiQ from source
Compile only when a repository package and official release asset are unsuitable. The upstream documentation states minimums of Qt 5.10 and FFmpeg 1.1.0, but its package names and repository examples are dated. Translate the dependency list for your distribution instead of copying it literally; names such as qt5-default may no longer exist.
The documented build sequence is:

sudo make installTypical Debian-family requirements include a compiler and Make, Git, FFmpeg, SoX, Qt5 development files, QML and multimedia modules, Qt OpenGL development files, qmake and notification development libraries. Exact package names vary between Debian and Ubuntu releases, and some systems provide multiple Qt toolchains. Consult the current upstream dependency list and your package manager’s search results.
Launch MystiQ
mystiqYou can pass one or more media files when launching. Debian’s manpage documents this syntax:
mystiq input.mp4

Convert your first file
- Open MystiQ from the application menu or run
mystiq. - Add one or more input media files.
- Choose an output format or a predefined preset.
- Select the destination directory and output filename, including the intended extension.
- Review the task’s conversion parameters before starting.
- Start the task and wait for it to finish.
- Open the result in a media player or inspect it with
ffprobe.
ffprobe output.mp4Button names and menu placement can differ between builds, so rely on the task and parameter preview in your installed version rather than an illustration from another release.

A preset usually sets several values together: the container, video and audio codecs, quality or bitrate, scaling, frame rate, stream mapping and whether streams are copied or re-encoded. Changing only a filename extension does not perform a compatible conversion.
- Broad-compatibility MP4: H.264 video with AAC audio is widely playable.
- WebM: VP9 or AV1 video with Opus audio suits WebM-compatible players.
- Lossless audio: FLAC preserves source losslessness; converting MP3 to FLAC cannot restore discarded detail.
- Small audio files: Opus or AAC may offer better efficiency than MP3 when the playback device supports them.
Re-encoding versus stream copying
Re-encoding changes the codec and can add another generation of lossy quality loss. Stream copying avoids that loss and is fast, but only works when the existing streams are accepted by the target container. The FFmpeg concepts are:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c copy output.mp4
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c:v libx264 -c:a aac output.mp4The first command can fail when the streams are unsuitable for MP4; the second re-encodes them. MystiQ’s per-task parameter editor can express similar choices, but inspect the generated parameters rather than assuming a particular preset copies streams.
Audio conversions
To extract audio from a video, add the video, choose an audio preset, confirm the output extension and check whether the audio is copied or re-encoded. For WAV to FLAC, use FLAC when preserving lossless quality matters. For MP3, a higher bitrate generally increases size, while re-encoding an already compressed source can reduce quality. SoX-dependent processing may be unavailable if SoX is not installed.

Video quality controls
Resolution, frame rate, codec, quality factor or bitrate, audio settings and container selection all affect the result. Reducing resolution cannot recover lost detail, and raising bitrate cannot improve a poor source. H.265/HEVC and AV1 can reduce file size but may play on fewer devices than H.264. Hardware encoding, when exposed by the build, often favors speed over compression efficiency; a compatible GPU alone does not guarantee that it will work.
Troubleshoot common problems
mystiq: command not found
command -v mystiqThe package may not be installed, installation may have failed, or a manually installed binary may not be on PATH. An AppImage is launched by its path, not usually with mystiq.
MystiQ opens but conversion fails
command -v ffmpeg
ffmpeg -version
ffprobe -hide_banner input-fileThese checks separate a missing backend, damaged input, unavailable codec, invalid custom parameter and unwritable destination from a GUI problem.
AppImage permission or FUSE errors
For “Permission denied,” run chmod +x MystiQ*.AppImage. For FUSE errors, install the compatibility package appropriate to your distribution or use --appimage-extract; there is no universal package name.

No sound in the output
The preset may omit audio, the source may have no audio stream, the target combination may be incompatible, or custom stream mapping may have removed it. Inspect the input with ffprobe -hide_banner input-file.
Large, poor-quality or slow output
- A large file can result from lossless output, excessive bitrate or inefficient encoding settings.
- Poor quality commonly follows lossy re-encoding, aggressive quality settings, or reduced resolution or frame rate. Keep the original and avoid repeated lossy conversions.
- Slow encoding can be caused by high resolution, H.265 or AV1 software encoding, two-pass or high-quality modes, absent hardware encoders, or a long queue.
Is MystiQ right for you?
MystiQ is a practical choice when you want FFmpeg’s format support without writing commands and still want access to editable task parameters. Use a distribution package for the simplest maintenance, an official release asset when packaging is unavailable, and source compilation only for a specific development need. HandBrake may be easier for video-focused workflows, while direct FFmpeg is better for automation and repeatable scripts.
