Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If YouTube keeps stopping to load, first lower the video quality, try another video and network, and restart the app or browser. Buffering often means the player cannot receive video data steadily enough, but weak Wi-Fi, a browser extension, an app fault, or the device itself can cause the same symptom. The steps below help isolate the cause before you change settings or buy equipment.
Try these quick fixes first
- Pause the video briefly, then resume it.
- Open the player’s Settings → Quality menu and choose a lower resolution.
- Close other streams, downloads, video calls, and unnecessary browser tabs.
- Restart YouTube; if that does not help, restart the browser or device.
- Try another video, then try YouTube on another network or device.
YouTube supports manual quality selection on computers, phones, tablets, and TVs; available options depend on the video and device. See YouTube’s instructions for changing video quality.
Work out what is buffering
Buffering happens when the player uses downloaded video data faster than it can receive more. Low sustained throughput is one possible cause, but signal loss, interference, network congestion, high resolution, device performance, browser extensions, corrupted site data, outdated software, VPNs, filtering, or a problem with a particular video can also interrupt playback. A fast broadband plan does not guarantee that the affected device is receiving a steady connection. YouTube’s video-error troubleshooting guidance covers connection, browser, device, and playback issues.
- Try several unrelated videos. If only one video fails, the issue may be limited to that upload or a particular segment.
- Try another service and another device on the same network. If several services fail across devices, investigate the home network or ISP. If only one device has trouble, focus on its Wi-Fi, software, or hardware.
- Try another network. Test cellular data instead of Wi-Fi, or Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi where available. If YouTube works there, the original network or its route to YouTube is a likely factor.
- Compare app and browser playback. If one works and the other does not, troubleshoot that app or browser before changing the whole network.
These comparisons narrow the possibilities; they do not by themselves prove which provider or component is at fault.

Lower the video quality
On a computer, open the video’s Settings → Quality. On a phone or tablet, tap the player, then Settings → Quality. On a TV or streaming device, open the player’s Settings → Quality. Try Auto first; if it continues to select a resolution that buffers, choose a lower one manually.
YouTube adjusts quality partly according to connection speed, player size, the upload’s available resolution, and browser support for video formats. A lower setting can keep playback going when a connection is unstable, but it does not repair that connection. If even 360p buffers across multiple videos, look beyond resolution at the network or device. YouTube explains the quality controls and automatic selection here.
Check the connection on the affected device
YouTube’s approximate recommended sustained speeds are shown below. These are recommendations, not guaranteed minimums: signal quality, congestion, packet loss, latency, and other people using the connection can affect playback too. The figures are for general YouTube streaming; purchased 4K movies and TV shows have separate guidance.

Run a speed test on the device that buffers, ideally while the problem is occurring. A test from a nearby wired computer may not reflect a television or phone receiving weak Wi-Fi. A single test measures performance to its test server at that moment; it cannot guarantee YouTube playback speed at every time or on every device.
Improve or isolate Wi-Fi
- Move the affected device closer to the router and reduce walls or other obstructions between them.
- Pause downloads, video calls, and other streams, or temporarily disconnect devices that are consuming substantial bandwidth.
- If your router offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, test each where the device is located. The better choice depends on distance and obstacles.
- Test Ethernet on a computer, TV, or streaming device if it supports a wired connection. If wired playback is stable but Wi-Fi is not, focus on wireless coverage or interference.
- Restart the modem and router if the problem persists. Use the device maker’s restart instructions; avoid a factory reset unless you are prepared to set up the network again.
YouTube recommends staying within router range, reducing interference and competing device use, and trying a wired connection where possible. Its streaming troubleshooting guide has further connection checks. Do not buy a router or upgrade broadband until these comparisons point to a network limitation.

Fix buffering in a computer browser
- Restart and update. Close and reopen the browser, update it, and restart the computer. Close unnecessary tabs and programs.
- Test a private window. In Chrome, select More → New Incognito Window and play the same video. If it works there, an extension or browser-profile data may be involved.
- Check extensions. In Chrome, select More → Extensions → Manage extensions. Temporarily disable extensions, especially ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, download managers, VPN extensions, and video-enhancement tools. Re-enable them one at a time to identify a conflict; do not leave security or privacy protections disabled unless you accept the trade-off.
- Try another supported, up-to-date browser. If YouTube works there, the original browser or its profile is the likely focus.
- Clear site data only if needed. In Chrome, select More → Delete browsing data, choose a time range and data types, then select Delete data. Clearing cookies can sign you out of websites and remove site settings, so this is a later step rather than the first test.
Chrome’s video and game troubleshooting recommends checking extensions and browser data. YouTube’s cache and cookies instructions explain the data-clearing process. YouTube also recommends a current compatible browser and checking extensions or ad blockers in its video-error guidance.
Fix the YouTube app on Android
- Update YouTube through Google Play, then close and reopen the app.
- Restart the Android device and test Wi-Fi versus cellular data.
- Open Settings → Apps or Applications → YouTube → Storage or Storage & cache, then tap Clear cache.
- Reopen YouTube and retry the video. If the problem remains, check for an Android system update before considering more disruptive steps.
Android labels vary by manufacturer and software version. Clear cache is not the same as clearing storage or app data, which can reset settings and sign-in state. YouTube’s Android troubleshooting steps include changing networks, clearing the app cache, restarting, and updating.
Fix the YouTube app on iPhone or iPad
- Force-close YouTube and reopen it; install any YouTube update from the App Store.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad and compare Wi-Fi playback with cellular playback. If testing cellular, make sure YouTube is allowed to use cellular data in iOS settings.
- Try the same video in Safari or another supported browser. If browser playback works, the app is the more likely source of the fault.
- If the app still fails, delete and reinstall YouTube, then sign in again if needed.
iOS does not provide the same general Android-style YouTube Clear cache control, so restarting, updating, or reinstalling are the practical app-level steps.

Fix YouTube on a TV, streaming stick, console, or Chromecast
- Quit the YouTube app and reopen it. Test another video and, if possible, another streaming app.
- Restart the TV or streaming device. For a full power cycle, unplug it, wait at least 30 seconds, then reconnect it.
- Install available YouTube app and device-software or TV-firmware updates.
- Test the device near the router or over Ethernet if supported. Compare with a phone or computer on the same network.
- If casting, test the video directly in the phone app and directly in the TV’s YouTube app. This helps distinguish casting from playback on the TV itself.
- If the issue seems tied to the account, sign out and back in, then compare playback while signed out where the device permits it.
YouTube recommends restarting TV devices, checking app and software updates, and testing another supported device in its video-error troubleshooting guide.

Follow the symptom to the likely cause
- Lower quality stops the buffering: The attempted quality may exceed steady throughput, or the network may be busy or unstable. Keep a lower setting if it is an acceptable workaround, then assess Wi-Fi and network use.
- A different network fixes it: Investigate the original Wi-Fi, router placement, congestion, ISP service, or network routing. Do not assume a new router is needed.
- Incognito works: Check extensions and browser-profile data; re-enable extensions individually to locate a conflict.
- Only one device has trouble: Check its signal at its location, software updates, app or browser, and device capability before changing the whole network.
- Only one video has trouble: Try unrelated videos, another device, and—if available—signed-out playback. Skip forward to see whether the fault is segment-specific. A live stream, premiere, high-resolution upload, or restricted video may behave differently from ordinary on-demand playback.
- Only live streams buffer: Live playback can be more sensitive to brief connection interruptions, particularly when using lower broadcast delay, because there is less buffer time. YouTube discusses live-stream buffering in its streaming troubleshooting guidance.
- YouTube alone fails across browsers and devices: Check whether a VPN, DNS setting, filtering software, ad blocker, or account state changes playback. Disable a VPN temporarily as a test; a VPN can worsen performance and is not a general buffering fix. Do not change DNS expecting it to increase bandwidth.
- Several services and devices fail, especially at busy times: Record the timing and test results; local congestion, Wi-Fi contention, or ISP congestion become more plausible.
A buffering icon means playback is waiting for data; jerky pictures while the timeline keeps moving may instead involve dropped frames, decoding, or device performance. Stats for nerds can help distinguish those cases, but its fields remain clues rather than a conclusive diagnosis.
When to contact YouTube, your ISP, or the device maker
Contact your ISP if the problem affects multiple devices or services and testing on the affected device shows persistently poor or unstable connection performance. Contact YouTube if the problem remains limited to YouTube across devices or networks, or appears tied to a particular signed-in account. Contact the device maker if the fault is isolated to one TV, streaming device, phone, or computer and persists in other apps too.
Include evidence that lets support reproduce and narrow the issue:
- Device model and operating-system or firmware version
- YouTube app or browser name and version
- Affected video URL or video ID, plus the date, time, and location
- Speed-test result taken on the affected device while the problem occurs
- Whether other YouTube videos, other services, or other devices work
- Whether Wi-Fi, cellular, Ethernet, or another network changes the result
- A Stats for nerds screenshot captured during the fault
- Whether playback differs signed in versus signed out, if you tested both
