iTunes still has a place on Windows 11, especially if you manage a local music library, back up older Apple devices, sync media over USB, or prefer Apple’s classic desktop app for purchases and playlists. Windows users can install iTunes in two main ways: through the Microsoft Store or with Apple’s standalone installer.
The best option depends on how you want updates handled, whether you need certain Apple background services installed separately, and what kind of device syncing or troubleshooting you expect to do. Once installed, iTunes can be used to sign in with an Apple ID, organize music and videos, import media, access purchased content, and connect an iPhone, iPad, or iPod.

This guide walks through both installation methods, the first-time setup process, basic media management, device syncing, and practical fixes for common Windows 11 issues such as iTunes not opening, an iPhone not being detected, or missing Apple drivers.
Check Windows 11 Requirements Before Installing iTunes
Before installing iTunes on Windows 11, take a few minutes to confirm that your PC is ready. iTunes is not demanding compared with modern creative apps, but it still depends on Windows updates, Apple background services, USB drivers, and enough storage space for your media library and device backups. Checking these items first can prevent failed installations, missing iPhone detection, sign-in errors, and syncing problems later.

For most Windows 11 PCs, the Microsoft Store version of iTunes is the simplest choice because it handles installation and updates through Windows. Apple’s standalone installer is also available and can be useful if you prefer a traditional desktop installer, need more control over repair or uninstall options, or are troubleshooting the Store version. In both cases, make sure Windows 11 is fully updated before you begin.
Basic requirements to check
- Windows version: Use a current Windows 11 installation. Open Settings > Windows Update and install pending updates before installing iTunes.
- Processor and memory: Any PC capable of running Windows 11 should be sufficient for iTunes, but 4 GB of RAM or more is recommended for smoother library browsing and syncing.
- Storage space: Keep at least a few gigabytes free for the app itself, then plan extra space for music, movies, podcasts, iPhone backups, and downloaded purchases.
- Internet connection: You need internet access to download iTunes, sign in with an Apple ID, authorize the computer, stream or download purchases, and update Apple components.
- Administrator access: Use an administrator account when installing iTunes, especially with Apple’s standalone installer, because it may install device drivers and background services.
- USB port and cable: For iPhone, iPad, or iPod syncing, use a reliable USB port and an Apple-certified or high-quality cable. Damaged charging-only cables often cause detection issues.
If you plan to sync an iPhone or iPad, also check that your device is unlocked and updated to a recent iOS or iPadOS version. When you connect it for the first time, Windows and iTunes may need to install or activate the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. You may also see a Trust This Computer prompt on the device; tapping Trust is required before iTunes can access the device for syncing, backups, or software updates.
Choose the right iTunes installer for your setup
| Option | Best for | Update method |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Store version | Most Windows 11 users who want the easiest installation | Updated through the Microsoft Store |
| Apple standalone installer | Users who need a direct installer, repair options, or Store troubleshooting | Updated through Apple Software Update or a newer installer |
Finally, consider where your iTunes library will live. By default, iTunes stores media in your user profile on the system drive, which can fill up quickly if you download movies or keep full device backups. If your PC has a secondary drive with more space, you can change the media folder location later in iTunes settings, but it helps to plan ahead before importing a large collection.

Install iTunes from the Microsoft Store
The Microsoft Store version is the easiest way to install iTunes on Windows 11 because it handles the download, installation, updates, and removal from one place. It is a good choice for most users, especially if you want a straightforward install without manually downloading setup files from a browser. The Store package includes iTunes and the required Apple components needed for common tasks such as signing in with an Apple ID, playing purchased media, and syncing supported iPhone, iPad, and iPod models.
To install it, open the Microsoft Store from the Start menu or taskbar search. In the Store search box, type iTunes, then select iTunes published by Apple Inc. Check the publisher name carefully so you do not install an unrelated app. Select Get or Install, then wait while Windows downloads and installs the app. Depending on your connection speed, this can take a few minutes.
- Click Start and open Microsoft Store.
- Search for iTunes.
- Select the listing from Apple Inc..
- Click Get or Install.
- After installation, click Open or launch iTunes from the Start menu.
The first time you open iTunes, Windows may ask for permission to allow related Apple services to run. Accept these prompts if you plan to sync Apple devices or access your library normally. iTunes may also ask you to agree to Apple’s software license agreement before the main window opens. Once iTunes launches, you can sign in from Account > Sign In using your Apple ID, or you can use the app without signing in if you only want to play local music files.
Store apps update through Microsoft Store rather than through Apple Software Update. To check for updates manually, open Microsoft Store, go to Library, then choose Get updates. Keeping iTunes updated can help with device detection, playback compatibility, and sign-in reliability. If you later decide to remove it, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, search for iTunes, select the three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall.

| Microsoft Store install | Best for |

| No separate installer file to manage | Users who prefer a simple installation process |
| Easy uninstall from Windows Settings | Users who may switch installation methods later |
Install iTunes Using Apple’s Standalone Installer
If you prefer not to use the Microsoft Store, Apple still provides a standalone iTunes installer for Windows. This version is useful on PCs where the Store is unavailable, restricted by an administrator, or not working correctly. It can also be a better fit if you are troubleshooting device driver issues, because the standalone package installs Apple components such as Apple Mobile Device Support and Bonjour directly through the traditional Windows installer.
To get it, open a web browser and go to Apple’s official iTunes download page. Look for the Windows download option rather than the Microsoft Store button. Depending on Apple’s current page layout, you may need to choose a link such as Looking for other versions? or select the Windows installer manually. Download the correct installer for your PC, usually the 64-bit version for Windows 11.

- Save the iTunes setup file to a location you can find easily, such as your Downloads folder.
- Close any open Apple apps, including iTunes, iCloud for Windows, or Apple Music Preview if installed.
- Double-click the downloaded installer file.
- If Windows asks for permission through User Account Control, select Yes.
- Follow the setup prompts, accepting the license agreement and choosing installation options when asked.
- Leave the default install location selected unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Click Install, then wait while Windows installs iTunes and its supporting Apple services.
During installation, you may see options to add iTunes shortcuts or make iTunes the default player for audio files. These choices are optional. If you already use another app for music or videos, you can leave iTunes installed without making it the default media player. After setup finishes, restart your PC if the installer asks you to do so. A restart can help Windows load Apple’s background services and device drivers correctly.
Standalone installer vs. Microsoft Store version
| Installer type | Best for | Update method |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Store | Simple installation and automatic app updates | Updated through the Microsoft Store |
| Apple standalone installer | Store-restricted PCs, manual installs, and driver troubleshooting | Updated through Apple Software Update or a newer installer |
After iTunes opens for the first time, you may be prompted to agree to Apple’s software license terms. Once accepted, check that the app runs normally by opening the menu bar and selecting Help > About iTunes to confirm the installed version. If you plan to sync an iPhone, iPad, or iPod, connect the device with a reliable USB cable and wait for Windows to finish installing the device driver. When the trust prompt appears on your device, tap Trust and enter your passcode so iTunes can recognize it.
If you previously installed the Microsoft Store version, uninstall it before using the standalone installer to avoid conflicts. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, remove iTunes, then install the standalone version. Your existing iTunes library is usually stored separately from the app itself, so uninstalling iTunes should not delete your music, playlists, or backups, but it is still wise to keep a current backup of media before changing installations.
Set Up iTunes and Sign In with Your Apple ID
After iTunes is installed on Windows 11, open it from the Start menu by searching for iTunes. The first launch may take a moment while iTunes creates its library files and checks for required Apple components. If you see a prompt asking you to accept the software license agreement, review it and select Agree to continue. You may also be asked whether iTunes can be your default app for audio files; choose the option that fits how you want Windows 11 to handle music playback.
To sign in, select Account from the menu bar at the top of iTunes, then choose Sign In. Enter your Apple ID email address and password, then complete any two-factor authentication prompt if it appears. If Apple sends a verification code to your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or trusted phone number, enter that code in iTunes when prompted. Once signed in, iTunes can access your purchases, Apple Music subscription if you have one, and account settings.
Authorize your Windows 11 PC
Signing in is not always the same as authorizing the computer. Authorization allows this Windows 11 PC to play protected purchases linked to your Apple ID, such as older iTunes Store music, movies, and TV shows. In iTunes, go to Account > Authorizations > Authorize This Computer. Enter your Apple ID password, then confirm. Apple allows a limited number of authorized computers per Apple ID, so if you have used iTunes on older PCs or Macs, you may need to deauthorize a device you no longer use.
- Sign in: connects iTunes to your Apple ID, purchases, and subscriptions.
- Authorize: permits this PC to play certain protected media from your account.
- Deauthorize: removes this PC from your authorization count before selling, resetting, or replacing it.
Check your basic iTunes settings
Before adding music or syncing a device, it is worth checking a few preferences. Select Edit > Preferences. On the General tab, choose which media types appear in your library, such as Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, or Audiobooks. On the Playback tab, adjust sound options like Sound Check or crossfade if desired. On the Advanced tab, review the iTunes Media folder location, which is where iTunes stores imported files when library organization is enabled.
If you want iTunes to keep your media neatly arranged, enable Keep iTunes Media folder organized. If you want iTunes to make its own copy of files when you import them, enable Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library. This is useful if your music is scattered across Downloads, Desktop, or an external drive, because iTunes can gather copies into one managed folder. If you prefer to leave files in their original locations, keep that option turned off.
Download previous purchases
Once your Apple ID is connected, you can download eligible purchases from the iTunes Store. Open Account > Purchased, then browse available music, movies, or TV shows associated with your account. Click the download icon next to an item to save it to your Windows 11 PC. If you use Apple Music, make sure your subscription is active and check whether Sync Library or iCloud Music Library options are available for your account, as this affects whether your cloud library appears in iTunes.

You can also resize columns, switch library views, and use the search field in the upper-right area of iTunes to find songs, albums, artists, movies, and playlists. After these setup steps, iTunes is ready for importing local media, downloading purchases, and syncing Apple devices over USB.

Add Music, Movies, and Other Media to Your Library
After iTunes is installed and signed in, you can build your library from music files, movie files, audiobooks, podcasts, and purchases linked to your Apple ID. On Windows 11, iTunes stores library information in your user profile by default, while the actual media files may stay in their original folders or be copied into the iTunes Media folder depending on your settings. Before importing a large collection, it is worth checking this behavior so your files are organized the way you expect.
Open iTunes, select Edit > Preferences, then choose the Advanced tab. Here you can see the current iTunes Media folder location. If you want iTunes to keep imported files together, enable Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library. You can also enable Keep iTunes Media folder organized so iTunes sorts files into artist, album, movie, and TV show folders automatically. These options are useful if you plan to back up your library or move it to another PC later.
Add existing files from your PC
To import media already saved on your Windows 11 computer, use the menu bar at the top of iTunes. Select File > Add File to Library to add one item, or choose File > Add Folder to Library to import an entire folder of music or videos. You can add common audio formats such as MP3, AAC, WAV, AIFF, and Apple Lossless, along with supported video files such as MP4, M4V, and MOV. If a file does not appear after importing, it may be in an unsupported format or protected by another service.
- Music: Imported songs appear under Music, where you can browse by artists, albums, songs, or genres.
- Movies and TV shows: Supported videos appear in the media selector near the top-left of the iTunes window.
- Audiobooks: Audiobook files may appear under Audiobooks, depending on their metadata and file type.
- Tones: Custom ringtone files can be managed for older iPhone syncing workflows if they are in the correct format.
Import CDs and edit media details
If your Windows 11 PC has an internal or external disc drive, you can also import audio CDs. Insert the CD, wait for iTunes to detect it, then choose whether to import the tracks. To adjust the import format and quality, go to Edit > Preferences > General > Import Settings. AAC is a good default for Apple devices, while MP3 is a practical choice if you want broader compatibility with non-Apple players.
Once items are in your library, you can clean up names, album art, genres, and track numbers. Right-click a song, album, movie, or audiobook and choose Song Info, Album Info, or Get Info, depending on the item. Use these fields to correct artist names, combine tracks into the same album, add artwork, or mark a video as a movie, TV show, or music video. Accurate metadata makes browsing easier and helps iTunes sync the right content to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod.
Download previous purchases
If you bought music, movies, or TV shows from Apple, you may be able to download them directly in iTunes after signing in. Select Account > Purchased, then choose the type of content you want to view. Click the download icon next to an item to save it to your PC. Availability can vary by country, media type, and licensing, so not every past purchase may be downloadable on every account.
Sync an iPhone, iPad, or iPod with iTunes
After your iTunes library is set up, you can use it to copy music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, audiobooks, photos, and other supported content to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod. Connect the device to your Windows 11 PC with a reliable USB cable, then unlock the device and tap Trust This Computer if prompted. In iTunes, click the small device icon near the top-left corner of the window to open the device management screen.
The page shows your device name, storage capacity, software version, backup options, and sync settings. Before syncing, check that the device has enough free space for the content you want to copy. You can use the colored storage bar at the bottom of the iTunes window to see how much space is used by apps, audio, photos, documents, and system data.

Choose what to sync
In the left sidebar under Settings, select a content type such as Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, Audiobooks, or Photos. Enable the sync checkbox for that category, then choose whether to sync the entire library or selected playlists, albums, artists, genres, shows, or folders. For music, you can sync specific playlists to keep storage use under control. For photos, choose a folder from your PC and decide whether to include subfolders or videos.
- Music: Sync your full music library or selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.
- Movies and TV Shows: Select individual videos or automatically include unwatched items.
- Podcasts and Audiobooks: Copy selected episodes or titles from your iTunes library.
- Photos: Sync images from a folder on your Windows 11 PC to the Photos app on the device.
When your selections are ready, click Apply in the lower-right corner of iTunes. If syncing does not start automatically, click Sync. Keep the device connected until the progress message at the top of iTunes is finished. Disconnecting too early can leave some items missing from the device, especially large videos or photo libraries.
Back up your device in iTunes
iTunes can also create a local backup of an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on your Windows 11 PC. On the page, go to the Backups section and choose This Computer. Select Encrypt local backup if you want the backup to include saved passwords, Wi-Fi settings, Health data, and website history. Click Back Up Now to start the backup. Store the encryption password somewhere safe, since iTunes cannot restore an encrypted backup without it.
If you use Apple Music, iCloud Photos, or other iCloud services, some sync options may be disabled in iTunes. For example, when Sync Library is enabled for Apple Music, music is managed through iCloud instead of manual USB syncing. In that case, adjust the related setting on the device or manage the content directly through Apple’s cloud services.

Fix Common iTunes Problems on Windows 11
Most iTunes problems on Windows 11 come down to outdated components, damaged library files, USB driver issues, or conflicts between the Microsoft Store version and Apple’s standalone installer. Start by closing iTunes, restarting Windows, and reopening the app. If the issue continues, check for updates: Microsoft Store users can open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates, while standalone users can open Apple Software Update from the Start menu.
iTunes will not open or keeps crashing
If iTunes launches briefly and then closes, disconnect any iPhone, iPad, or iPod first, then try opening iTunes again. A connected device with a sync problem can sometimes stop iTunes from loading normally. You can also try running iTunes as an administrator by right-clicking its Start menu shortcut and selecting Run as administrator. If that works, the issue may be related to permissions in your Music folder or iTunes library location.
- Install the latest Windows 11 updates from Settings > Windows Update.
- Update iTunes and all Apple components, including Apple Mobile Device Support.
- Temporarily disable third-party security software to test whether it is blocking iTunes.
- Repair or reinstall iTunes if crashes continue after updating.
Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod is not detected
When iTunes does not recognize a connected device, use a direct USB connection instead of a hub, dock, monitor port, or front-panel desktop port. Unlock the device and tap Trust This Computer if prompted. Try another Apple-certified cable, because charging-only or damaged cables can prevent data transfer even when the device appears to charge.
For the standalone iTunes version, check the Apple Mobile Device Service. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Find Apple Mobile Device Service, then choose Restart. If the service is missing, reinstall iTunes using Apple’s installer. For the Microsoft Store version, unplug the device, restart Windows, open iTunes, and reconnect the device after iTunes is fully loaded.

If your library looks empty after an update or reinstall, iTunes may be opening a new library file instead of your existing one. Hold Shift while opening iTunes, choose Choose Library, and browse to your iTunes folder, usually located in Music > iTunes. Select the file named iTunes Library.itl. If you recently moved media to another drive, go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and confirm that the iTunes Media folder location points to the correct path.

Downloads, purchases, or Apple ID features fail
If you cannot download purchases, authorize the PC from Account > Authorizations > Authorize This Computer. Make sure the Apple ID shown under the Account menu is the same one used to buy the content. If the iTunes Store does not load, confirm your date, time, and region settings in Windows 11, then test your connection in another browser. VPNs, proxies, and restrictive DNS filters can also stop iTunes from contacting Apple’s servers.
Repair or reinstall iTunes cleanly
If basic troubleshooting does not help, repair iTunes from Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Find iTunes, open its menu, and choose Advanced options or Modify if available. For a clean reinstall, uninstall iTunes and related Apple components, restart Windows, then install one version only: either the Microsoft Store edition or Apple’s standalone installer. Avoid switching between both repeatedly, as mixed components can create driver and update problems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I install iTunes from the Microsoft Store or Apple’s website on Windows 11?
For most Windows 11 users, the Microsoft Store version is the easiest choice because it installs cleanly and updates automatically. Use Apple’s standalone installer if you need a traditional desktop installer, are troubleshooting Store-related problems, or need more control over repair and uninstall options.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Start by unlocking the device and tapping Trust This Computer when prompted. If it still does not appear, try a different USB cable or port, restart both devices, and update iTunes. With the standalone version, you may also need to repair or reinstall Apple Mobile Device Support.
Can I still use iTunes to back up and sync an iPhone on Windows 11?
Yes, iTunes on Windows 11 can still back up, restore, and sync an iPhone, iPad, or iPod over USB. You can choose local encrypted backups if you want to include saved passwords, Wi-Fi settings, and Health data. Media syncing is managed from the device page inside iTunes once the device is connected.
Where does iTunes store music and backups on Windows 11?
Your iTunes media library is usually stored in the Music folder under Music\iTunes\iTunes Media, unless you changed the media folder location in Preferences. iPhone and iPad backups are stored separately in the Windows user profile under Apple’s MobileSync backup folder. You can change the media folder location in iTunes, but Apple does not provide a simple built-in setting for moving device backups.
What should I do if iTunes is slow, crashes, or will not open on Windows 11?
First, update iTunes and Windows 11, then restart your PC and try opening iTunes again. If the problem continues, disconnect external devices, test with a new iTunes library by holding Shift while opening iTunes, or repair the app from Windows settings. If you installed the standalone version, uninstalling all Apple components and reinstalling iTunes often fixes corrupted support files.
Bottom Line
iTunes still works well on Windows 11 as long as you install the right version for your needs: the Microsoft Store version is simplest for most users, while Apple’s standalone installer can be better for certain troubleshooting or legacy setups. Once installed, signing in with your Apple ID, organizing your library, and connecting your iPhone, iPad, or iPod gives you access to backups, syncing, purchases, and media management in one place.
If iTunes will not open, detect your device, or sync correctly, start with the basics: update Windows, update iTunes, check your cable, restart Apple services, and reinstall the app if needed. After setup is working, make a quick backup of your device and confirm your music, movies, and playlists sync the way you expect.
