GIMP is a free, open-source image editor that runs well on Windows 11 and gives you many of the tools needed for photo retouching, graphic design, screenshots, web images, and simple creative projects. It supports layers, selections, filters, brushes, text, and a wide range of file formats, making it a useful option whether you are editing an image for personal use or preparing graphics for work.

Installing GIMP on Windows 11 is straightforward when you use the official download source and follow the setup prompts carefully. Once installed, a few basic configuration steps can make the interface easier to use, especially if you are new to image editing or switching from another editor.

This guide walks through checking requirements, downloading and installing GIMP, launching it for the first time, adjusting basic settings, and performing common editing tasks. It also covers how to update GIMP, fix common installation problems, and remove it safely from Windows 11 if you no longer need it.

Check Windows 11 Requirements for GIMP

Before downloading GIMP, make sure your Windows 11 PC can run it comfortably. GIMP is not a heavy application compared with many professional graphics suites, but image editing can still use a noticeable amount of memory, storage, and processor power, especially when working with large photos, mulle layers, or high-resolution exports.

#1 Best Overall

Basic system requirements

GIMP runs on modern Windows 11 systems, including most laptops and desktops sold in recent years. For a smooth experience, check these areas first:

  • Operating system: Windows 11, 64-bit edition. Most Windows 11 installations are 64-bit, which is what the current GIMP installer is designed for.
  • Processor: A modern Intel, AMD, or ARM-based Windows device capable of running desktop apps. Faster CPUs will make filters, transformations, and exports complete more quickly.
  • Memory: At least 4 GB of RAM for light editing. 8 GB or more is better if you plan to work with large images or several files at once.
  • Storage space: Keep at least 1 GB free for the installer and application files. Additional free space is recommended for temporary files, plug-ins, fonts, brushes, and project files.
  • Display: A screen resolution of 1280 × 720 or higher is recommended so the toolbox, dockable panels, and image canvas fit comfortably.
  • Internet connection: Required to download the installer and useful for future updates, help files, plug-ins, and documentation.

To check your Windows version and hardware, right-click the Start button and choose System. In the Settings window, review the Device specifications and Windows specifications sections. Look for the installed RAM, processor type, system type, and Windows edition. If the system type says 64-bit operating system, you are ready to use the standard Windows installer from the GIMP website.

Recommended setup for better performance

If you regularly edit camera photos, scanned images, social media graphics, or layered compositions, a stronger setup will make GIMP feel much more responsive. A PC with 8 GB to 16 GB of RAM, an SSD, and several gigabytes of free storage is a good target. An SSD helps GIMP launch faster and improves performance when Windows or GIMP needs to use temporary storage during larger edits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Usage Suggested Windows 11 setup
Simple cropping, resizing, and file conversion 4 GB RAM, basic dual-core processor, 1 GB free space
Photo retouching and layered edits 8 GB RAM, SSD storage, modern multi-core processor
Large images, many layers, plug-ins, and batch work 16 GB RAM or more, SSD, plenty of free disk space

Also confirm that your Windows 11 installation is up to date. Open Settings, go to Windows Update, and install any pending updates before installing GIMP. This can help prevent installer errors related to system components, permissions, or outdated runtime files. If you use security software, keep it enabled, but be prepared to approve the installer if Windows asks for permission during setup.

Download GIMP from the Official Website

After confirming your Windows 11 PC meets the requirements, download GIMP from the official GIMP website to avoid modified installers, bundled software, or outdated copies from third-party download sites. Open your browser and go to gimp.org, then choose the Download option from the site’s main navigation. The site usually detects your operating system automatically and presents the Windows installer.

On the download page, look for the current stable release for Microsoft Windows. You will typically see a direct download button and, in some cases, a BitTorrent option. For most Windows 11 users, the simplest choice is the direct download, often labeled similar to Download GIMP directly. Click it and save the installer to a location you can easily find, such as your Downloads folder or desktop.

Choose the correct Windows installer

GIMP for Windows is commonly provided as a standard installer file with an .exe extension. If the site lists mulle downloads, select the one intended for Windows, not macOS or Linux. Windows 11 systems are almost always 64-bit, so the standard Windows download from the official page is usually the right choice. Avoid portable or repackaged versions unless you specifically know you need them, because they may not update or integrate with Windows in the same way as the official installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Official source: Use gimp.org rather than software mirror sites or ads in search results.
  • File type: Download the Windows .exe installer.
  • Version: Choose the latest stable release shown on the GIMP download page.
  • Location: Save it somewhere easy to access, such as the Downloads folder.

Check the download before running it

Once the installer finishes downloading, open File Explorer and go to the folder where you saved it. The file name should clearly reference GIMP and the version number. If the file name looks unrelated, contains extra promotional wording, or came from a different website than expected, delete it and download again from the official site. You can also right-click the file, select Properties, and review the file details before opening it.

If your browser or Windows Security displays a warning, read it carefully. A normal prompt may appear because the installer is an executable file downloaded from the internet. However, if Windows reports a specific threat, do not run the file. Delete it, update Windows Security definitions if needed, and return to the official GIMP download page to try again. When the file appears correct and has downloaded completely, you are ready to start the installation process.

Install GIMP on Windows 11

After downloading the official GIMP installer for Windows, open File Explorer and go to your Downloads folder, or the folder where you saved the file. The installer name usually includes the GIMP version number and ends in .exe. Double-click the installer to begin. If Windows 11 displays a User Account Control prompt asking whether you want to allow the app to make changes to your device, choose Yes to continue.

The GIMP setup wizard will open and let you choose how to install the program. For most users, the standard installation is the best choice because it places GIMP in the default Program Files location and includes the components needed to run the editor normally. If you see an option such as Install or Customize, choose Install unless you specifically need to change the installation folder or components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the installer

  1. Double-click the downloaded GIMP .exe file.
  2. Select Yes if Windows asks for administrator permission.
  3. Choose your preferred setup option, such as Install for the default installation.
  4. Wait while the installer copies files to your PC.
  5. Click Finish when the installation is complete.

The installation may take a few minutes depending on your computer and storage speed. During this time, avoid closing the installer or shutting down your PC. When the setup finishes, GIMP may offer to launch immediately. If not, you can open it from the Start menu by selecting Start, typing GIMP, and clicking the GIMP app result.

If Windows blocks or warns about the installer

Windows 11 may show a security warning if the installer is new, uncommon, or downloaded through a browser that marks executable files for extra review. If you downloaded GIMP from the official website, you can continue by selecting the available option to run the file. If the warning includes More info, click it and then choose Run anyway if you are confident the file came from the official GIMP download page.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

If the installer does not open, right-click the file and select Run as administrator. You should also make sure the download completed fully; a partial download can fail to launch or stop midway through setup. If needed, delete the installer, download a fresh copy from the official site, and try again. Temporarily pausing third-party antivirus software may help if it incorrectly blocks the installer, but turn protection back on after setup finishes.

Confirm GIMP installed correctly

  • Open the Start menu and search for GIMP.
  • Launch the app and wait for the first startup scan to complete.
  • Check that the main GIMP window, toolbox, and image workspace appear.
  • Optionally right-click GIMP in the Start menu and choose Pin to Start or Pin to taskbar for easier access.

The first launch can be slower than later launches because GIMP initializes fonts, plug-ins, and user folders. Once the main interface appears, the installation is complete and you are ready to configure the workspace and begin editing images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set Up GIMP After Installation

After the installer finishes, launch GIMP from the Windows 11 Start menu by selecting Start, typing GIMP, and opening the app from the results. The first launch can take longer than usual because GIMP creates its user profile, loads plug-ins, builds font caches, and prepares default settings. Once the main window appears, you should see the toolbox, image area, and dockable panels such as Layers, Brushes, and Tool Options.

If GIMP opens in a layout that feels unfamiliar, enable a simpler workspace first. Go to Windows and make sure Single-Window Mode is checked. This keeps the toolbox, canvas, and panels inside one application window, which is usually easier to manage on Windows 11 than separate floating windows. If any panels are missing, open Windows > Dockable Dialogs and choose items such as Layers, Tool Options, Brushes, or Undo History.

Adjust the Interface and Default Behavior

Before editing images, spend a few minutes setting up GIMP’s preferences. Open Edit > Preferences. Under Interface, you can adjust the icon theme, icon size, and color theme. If you use a high-resolution display, increasing icon size can make the tools easier to click. Under Tool Options, you can choose whether GIMP saves tool settings between sessions, which is useful if you often work with the same brush, crop, or selection settings.

  • Theme: Use a dark, gray, or light theme depending on what is easiest on your eyes.
  • Icon size: Increase this on 1440p, 4K, or scaled Windows 11 displays.
  • Default image settings: Set a preferred canvas size, resolution, and background color under Default Image.
  • Export behavior: Review options under Image Import & Export if you regularly work with JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or WebP files.

Next, confirm that GIMP is using the right folders for resources such as fonts, brushes, patterns, and plug-ins. In Edit > Preferences, expand Folders. Most users can keep the defaults, but this area is useful if you want to add custom brushes or scripts later. You can place downloaded brushes in your GIMP user folder and restart the program, or add a custom folder path here so GIMP scans it on startup.

Set File Associations and Pin GIMP for Quick Access

Windows 11 may not automatically make GIMP the default app for image files. If you want certain formats to open in GIMP, right-click an image file, choose Open with > Choose another app, select GIMP, and choose whether to use it always for that file type. You can also manage this through Settings > Apps > Default apps. Many users prefer to associate GIMP with formats such as .xcf, .psd, .png, and .jpg, while leaving quick photo viewing to the Windows Photos app.

For easier access, pin GIMP to your taskbar or Start menu. Open the Start menu, search for GIMP, right-click it, and select Pin to taskbar or Pin to Start. If you work with images often, this saves time and also makes it easy to drag image files onto the GIMP icon to open them. Once your layout, preferences, and file associations are set, GIMP is ready for everyday editing tasks such as cropping, resizing, retouching, adding text, and exporting images for web or print use.

Use GIMP for Basic Image Editing Tasks

Once GIMP is installed and configured, you can begin with common editing tasks such as opening an image, cropping it, resizing it, adjusting colors, adding text, and exporting the finished file. Launch GIMP from the Start menu, then select File > Open to choose an image from your PC. GIMP supports many formats, including JPG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, WebP, PSD, and its native XCF format. If you plan to make mulle edits, save a working copy first by choosing File > Save As and using the .xcf format so layers and editable elements are preserved.

For simple composition changes, use the tools in the left toolbox. Select the Crop Tool, drag over the area you want to keep, adjust the handles, and press Enter. To resize an image, go to Image > Scale Image, enter the desired width or height, keep the chain icon linked to preserve proportions, and click Scale. For straightening a slightly tilted photo, use the Rotate Tool from the toolbox or choose Tools > Transform Tools > Rotate, make a small angle adjustment, then crop away the transparent corners.

Common beginner edits in GIMP

  • Adjust brightness and contrast: Open Colors > Brightness-Contrast, move the sliders, and preview the result before applying it.
  • Improve color balance: Use Colors > Levels or Colors > Curves for more control over shadows, midtones, and highlights.
  • Remove small blemishes: Select the Heal Tool, hold Ctrl and click a clean nearby area, then paint over the spot you want to fix.
  • Add text: Choose the Text Tool, click on the image, type your text, then adjust the font, size, color, and alignment in the tool options.
  • Make a selection: Use the Rectangle Select, Ellipse Select, or Free Select tools to isolate part of an image before copying, cutting, filling, or applying effects.

Layers are one of the most useful parts of GIMP. When you add text, paste another image, or create a new transparent element, it can appear on its own layer in the Layers panel. This lets you move, hide, resize, reorder, or delete parts of the design without damaging the original image. For example, if you are making a thumbnail or social media graphic, open the background image, add text on a separate layer, then place a logo or icon on another layer. Use the eye icon beside each layer to show or hide it, and use the opacity slider to make a layer partially transparent.

When your edit is finished, choose the right save option. Use File > Save or File > Save As to keep an editable XCF project. To create a standard image file for sharing, uploading, or printing, choose File > Export As. Enter a file name ending in .jpg, .png, or .webp, then click Export. Use JPG for photos with smaller file sizes, PNG for screenshots or graphics that need sharp edges or transparency, and WebP for modern web use when you want good quality with efficient compression.

Check your current GIMP version

To see which version is installed, open GIMP, select Help from the top menu, then choose About GIMP. The version number appears in the About window. Next, visit the official GIMP website and compare your installed version with the latest Windows release shown on the download page. If the website lists a newer version, download the Windows installer from the official source rather than from a third-party download site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update GIMP on Windows 11

In most cases, updating GIMP is as simple as running the latest installer. Close GIMP before you begin, then double-click the downloaded installer and follow the setup prompts. The installer normally detects the existing installation and replaces the older program files while keeping your user settings, brushes, plug-ins, and recent configuration data in your Windows user profile. After installation finishes, launch GIMP and check Help > About GIMP again to confirm that the new version is active.

  • Close GIMP first: Open files or active GIMP processes can interfere with replacement of program files.
  • Use the official installer: This reduces the risk of bundled software or modified installers.
  • Restart Windows if needed: If the installer reports locked files or a failed replacement, restart Windows 11 and run the installer again.
  • Back up custom resources: If you rely on custom brushes, scripts, palettes, or plug-ins, copy your GIMP profile folder before major upgrades.

Troubleshoot update or installation problems

If the installer will not open, right-click it and choose Properties, then check whether Windows shows an Unblock option near the bottom of the General tab. Select it if available, then try again. If Windows SmartScreen appears, confirm that the publisher and file source are expected before continuing. For permission-related errors, run the installer from an administrator account or right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.

If GIMP launches but behaves strangely after an update, the issue may be linked to older plug-ins or damaged preferences. Start by removing recently added third-party plug-ins. You can also reset GIMP’s user configuration by renaming the GIMP profile folder in your user AppData directory, then reopening GIMP so it creates a fresh profile. This can resolve startup crashes, missing tools, broken docks, and unusual interface behavior without changing the main program installation.

Uninstall GIMP safely

To remove GIMP from Windows 11, open Settings, go to Apps > Installed apps, search for GIMP, select the three-dot menu beside it, and choose Uninstall. Follow the prompts to remove the application. You can also uninstall it from Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features if you prefer the classic Windows interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uninstalling GIMP usually removes the application files but may leave your personal configuration files behind. This is useful if you plan to reinstall later and want to keep your settings. If you want a clean removal, delete the remaining GIMP profile folder from your user AppData location after uninstalling. Before deleting anything, export or copy any custom brushes, gradients, palettes, templates, scripts, or plug-ins you may want to reuse. Once removed, restart Windows 11 if you are troubleshooting a failed installation or preparing for a clean reinstall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GIMP safe to install on Windows 11?

Yes, GIMP is safe to install if you download it from the official GIMP website or a trusted source linked from it. Avoid third-party download sites that may bundle installers with unwanted software. During installation, check that the publisher and file name match the official GIMP installer before continuing.

Do I need a powerful PC to run GIMP on Windows 11?

GIMP runs on most Windows 11 PCs, including many laptops with modest hardware. For basic tasks like cropping, resizing, and adjusting colors, 4 GB of RAM can work, but 8 GB or more is better for larger images or mulle layers. Having enough free storage space also helps avoid slowdowns when editing large files.

Can GIMP open and edit Photoshop PSD files?

GIMP can open many PSD files and lets you edit common elements such as layers, text, and transparency. Some Photoshop-specific features may not transfer perfectly, including certain adjustment layers, smart objects, layer effects, or advanced blending options. If you need maximum compatibility, keep a backup of the original PSD before editing it in GIMP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if GIMP will not install or launch on Windows 11?

First, restart your PC and download a fresh copy of the installer from the official GIMP website. Run the installer as an administrator, make sure Windows 11 is fully updated, and temporarily check whether antivirus software is blocking the installer. If GIMP launches but behaves strangely, resetting or renaming its user configuration folder can often fix corrupted settings.

How do I completely uninstall GIMP from Windows 11?

You can uninstall GIMP from Settings by opening Apps, selecting Installed apps, finding GIMP, and choosing Uninstall. This removes the main program, but personal settings, plug-ins, or cached configuration files may remain in your user profile. If you want a clean reinstall later, remove the leftover GIMP configuration folder after backing up any brushes, scripts, or plug-ins you want to keep.

Bottom Line

GIMP is a powerful, free image editor that runs well on Windows 11 once you download it from the official source, install it properly, and take a few minutes to set up the interface, tools, and file preferences. From there, you can handle everyday tasks like cropping, resizing, retouching, adding text, working with layers, and exporting images in common formats.

If GIMP does not launch or install correctly, start with the basics: update Windows, reinstall the latest official version, check permissions, and remove conflicting or incomplete installs. Once everything is working, keep GIMP updated and practice with a few simple edits so you can build confidence before moving on to more advanced projects.
