Install and update mods through the route supported by your specific game, and check the game version, mod requirements, and backup options before changing a working setup. Nexus Mods, Steam Workshop, and CurseForge do not use interchangeable methods: Vortex supports selected games, Workshop behavior depends on the game, and the cited CurseForge instructions apply to Minecraft modpacks.
Choose the installation method your game supports
Start with the exact game, edition, platform, and version you use. Then check the game’s current modding documentation to confirm which services and managers it supports. A mod being listed on a platform does not mean every game can install it through that platform.

- Nexus Mods: Nexus describes Vortex as a manager for supported games, with features for installing and organizing mods and checking for available updates. Confirm that your game and the specific mod support the workflow before using it.
- Steam Workshop: Subscribe to mods only in games that implement Workshop support. The game’s own guide explains how subscriptions and updates work for that title.
- CurseForge: The cited app-based instructions cover Minecraft modpacks, not every game on CurseForge. Follow the current instructions for the game and pack you selected.
These tools can make installation and organization easier; they do not guarantee that every file is safe or compatible.
Check compatibility before installing or updating
Open the original mod or pack page on its platform. Check the supported game version, dependencies, loader requirements, installation notes, and update notes. Compare those requirements with your installed game and mod profile before proceeding.

Version matching matters especially for Minecraft modpacks: CurseForge’s custom profile guidance explains that profiles and mod files are associated with a specific Minecraft version. Match the profile, loader, and mod versions required by the pack rather than assuming a newer game version will work.
Games may also identify outdated mods in different ways. For example, the Ostranauts modding guide describes a warning when a mod targets an older version than the running game. Treat that as a game-specific feature, not a guarantee that other games will detect incompatibilities.

Install through the supported flow
- Confirm the game and its mod support. Check the game’s official modding instructions and verify the correct edition and installed version.
- Review the mod page. Read its requirements, compatibility notes, dependencies, and installation instructions. Use the mod’s original page rather than an unrelated download mirror.
- Use the game’s supported platform workflow. For a supported Nexus Mods title, use Vortex if appropriate. For a Workshop-enabled game, subscribe using its Workshop page or in-game menu as its documentation directs. For a Minecraft modpack on CurseForge, follow the current CurseForge app instructions for that pack.
- Launch and check the result. Confirm that the game detects the mod or pack as expected. If it fails to load, consult the game’s and mod’s instructions before changing files or adding more mods.
Back up before changing a working setup
Before a major update or profile change, make a separate copy of the saves, configuration, and mod data you may need to restore. Save it somewhere outside the files being changed; an external drive is one option, but no storage location substitutes for checking that the important files were actually copied.
Do not assume a game backup includes every save or custom file. Steam Support’s backup guidance notes that its backup feature excludes saves and custom content for Valve-created games, and says many games using third-party installers or downloaders will not work with Steam’s backup feature. Check the selected game’s save location and backup documentation, then verify your separate copy before updating.

Update mods in a controlled way
- Check what changed. Read the mod’s release notes and verify that the new version supports your game version and dependencies.
- Review the game’s update behavior. Workshop update behavior is determined by the individual game. An official Ostranauts guide, for instance, says subscribed Workshop mods download automatically when updates are available. Do not assume another title behaves the same way or offers a particular update control; consult its current documentation.
- Apply changes deliberately. If you manage updates manually, change one logical group at a time when practical. That makes it easier to identify a conflict if the game stops loading correctly.
- Test the game. Check that it starts and that the affected content works before making further changes.
- Recover if needed. If an update causes a failure, disable the changed mod or restore the separate backup, then check the game’s and mod’s compatibility notes before trying again.
Understand the limits of scanning and moderation
Nexus Mods says uploaded content receives multiple security checks and virus scanning before it is made available for download. It also notes that antivirus software can flag mods because some contain code or behavior that resembles threats. Screening can reduce risk, but it is not a guarantee that every file is safe; likewise, an antivirus alert should be investigated rather than automatically dismissed.
Steam’s tModLoader announcement describes work with Valve on a moderation approval queue intended to catch malicious Workshop items or updates, while acknowledging that mods carry inherent risk. Use official platform pages, avoid suspicious redirects or unrelated installers, and assess an alert using the mod page, the file, and credible security guidance.
