A secondary, non-critical iPhone is the safer choice. Before enrolling, make and retain a backup from your current public iOS version: a backup made while the phone runs beta iOS cannot restore it to an earlier public version.
Should you install an iOS beta on your main iPhone?
Apple warns that beta software may contain errors or inaccuracies and may not work as well as commercially released software. Apple recommends installing it only on a non-production, non-business-critical device, preferably a secondary device. See the Apple Beta Software Program FAQ.

A second iPhone limits the disruption if an app, feature, or everyday workflow misbehaves. If you have only one phone, consider how much you rely on it for work, travel, payments, communication, or other essential tasks. Do not install the beta on that device unless you accept the risk of bugs and the possibility of an erase-and-restore to get back to public iOS.

Back up before enrolling
Create a fresh backup while the iPhone is still running public iOS, and keep it available until you are sure you will not need to roll back. Apple cautions that a backup made on beta iOS will not work with an earlier iOS version. If you later downgrade, you may need to erase the phone and restore from this pre-beta backup; changes made after that backup may not be recoverable from it. Apple explains the limitation in its guidance on uninstalling iOS beta software.

Before starting, also check that your iPhone is compatible with the beta currently offered, has enough free storage, and can connect to the internet. For a wireless update, use Wi-Fi and keep the iPhone connected to power. Beta availability and device eligibility can vary, so check the current offer on your own phone rather than assuming every model gets the same build.
Enroll and install the offered beta
- Enroll the iPhone. Sign in to Apple’s Apple Beta Software Program with your Apple Account and enroll the device. Apple says enrolled devices receive beta versions through Software Update.
- Select the beta in Settings. On supported recent iOS versions, open Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates, choose the beta offered to your device, and follow the onscreen instructions. If the option or a beta does not appear, availability or device eligibility may be the reason.
- Let the update finish. Keep the iPhone connected to power and a reliable internet connection while it downloads and installs. Avoid relying on the phone for time-critical tasks during the update.
Test the beta and report problems
Test the parts of iOS that matter to you, including the apps and routines you depend on. Watch for crashes, missing features, battery or connectivity problems, and anything that interrupts an essential workflow. A beta is most useful when you can identify and describe a reproducible issue without putting critical work at risk.

Stop receiving future beta updates
On iOS 16.4 or later, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates > Off. This does not remove or downgrade the beta already installed. The iPhone can receive the next public version through Software Update when that version becomes available. Apple documents the steps on its unenrollment page.
Return to public iOS immediately
Apple says you must erase and restore the iPhone to remove beta software and return to a previously released version. Use the archived backup made before installing the beta; a beta-era backup is not compatible with an earlier public iOS version. If you installed the beta using a computer, restoring the device is required to remove it. Apple’s beta uninstall instructions explain the process.

Restore a backup during setup
After erasing the phone, restore a suitable dated backup during setup. Apple supports restoring from iCloud or from a computer using Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, depending on your setup. Choose the pre-beta backup if you are returning to earlier public iOS; consult Apple’s backup restoration guidance for the available restore paths.

If the beta update is missing or will not install
- Confirm eligibility: Check that the iPhone supports the currently offered update and that the device is enrolled.
- Check storage and connection: Free up space if needed and retry on reliable Wi-Fi with the phone connected to power. Apple lists insufficient storage, internet or server connectivity, and long download times among possible update issues. See Apple’s update troubleshooting steps.
- Try a computer if needed: Apple also provides guidance for resolving iPhone update and restore errors. For computer-based updating or restoring, use the supplied cable or another Apple-certified USB cable, with a connector that fits your iPhone model. A cable is relevant to this computer route, not a requirement for a normal wireless installation.
