Then shut down and unplug the PC, seat the card in a PCIe x16 slot, secure it, connect every required power plug, and install the current AMD driver for your operating system.
Check your case, power supply and card model first
“RX 9070 XT” describes a GPU family, not one universal card design. Partner models can differ in length, height, thickness, power sockets and recommended power supply. Look up the exact model number on the card maker’s product page and in its manual before opening your PC.

- Case clearance: Compare the card’s length, height and thickness with your case’s published clearances. Check for obstructions such as drive cages, radiator fans and cables, and allow enough room to insert and secure the card.
- Power supply: AMD’s RX 9070 XT family support specifications list a 750 W minimum PSU recommendation, 304 W typical board power and two 8-pin additional-power connectors. Those are family-level figures; use the exact card maker’s recommendation if it differs.
- Connector and cable requirements: Confirm the number and type of sockets on your card and the connection instructions for your specific PSU. Do not assume one cable arrangement applies to every GPU and PSU combination; follow both manufacturers’ manuals.
- Other practical checks: Make sure the case has an available expansion-slot position and that the card can be secured without pressing against nearby components. Check whether the card includes a support bracket and whether its maker specifies using one.
For a concrete example, ASRock lists its RX9070XT MH 16G at 298 × 131 × 58 mm, with two 8-pin power connectors and an 800 W recommended PSU. Those details apply to that specific model, not to every RX 9070 XT.
Install the card in the PC
The precise details can vary by card. Use your model’s installation guide where it differs from this general sequence. PowerColor’s Red Devil RX 9070 XT Limited Edition quick guide, for example, describes switching off and disconnecting the PSU before installation, then seating and securing the card and connecting its required PCIe power.

- Shut down and disconnect power. Turn off the PC, switch off the PSU and unplug the power cord. Follow your PC and card makers’ safety instructions.
- Open the case and prepare the slot. Remove the case panel. If you are replacing a graphics card, disconnect its power plugs, release its slot retention mechanism and remove it. Remove the expansion-slot covers that line up with the new card. If the card has a contact protector, remove it before installation.
- Seat the RX 9070 XT. Align the card with the appropriate PCI Express x16 slot and the case openings. Press it into the slot until it is fully seated and the slot retention mechanism engages. Avoid forcing it; if it does not align, check the slot covers and card position.
- Secure the bracket. Fasten the card’s bracket to the case using the appropriate screws. If the manufacturer supplied a support bracket or specifies one, install it as directed.
- Connect the GPU power. Plug in every power connector required by the exact card. Check that each plug is fully seated and route cables according to the GPU and PSU manuals. Do not substitute a generic cable arrangement for the instructions that apply to your PSU.
- Close up and reconnect. Check that the card is secure, cables are clear of fans and no tools or loose screws remain inside. Replace the case panel, reconnect the PC’s power and peripherals, and switch the PSU back on.
Boot the PC and install the AMD driver
Once the computer starts, update the operating system and get the graphics driver from AMD’s official RX 9070 XT support page. AMD says its software and drivers are designed to work best with up-to-date operating systems.
- Choose how to get the driver. On AMD’s RX 9070 XT support page, select the card and your operating system to download a driver manually. Alternatively, AMD’s Auto-Detect and Install tool can detect the graphics card and Windows version and select a compatible driver; the tool requires an internet connection.
- Check the current release. Driver listings change. On 2026-10-04, AMD’s Windows listing showed Adrenalin 26.9.1 Optional, released 2026-09-03, and Adrenalin 26.8.1 WHQL Recommended, released 2026-08-20. Those are the listings on that date, not a permanent recommendation. Check AMD’s live page for the current version and release notes.
- Run the installer. Open the downloaded AMD installer and follow its prompts. Restart the PC if the installer requests it.
- Confirm operating-system support. AMD’s Adrenalin installer support page lists Windows 11 version 21H2 or later and Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 or later for the described installer. Requirements can change, so check AMD’s current support information for your release.
AMD’s RX 9070 XT support page also lists Linux packages for the distributions it supports. Select the appropriate operating system and package on AMD’s page rather than using Windows instructions for a Linux installation.
Quick Recap
Rank #2
- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
If the card does not fit, power on or install its driver
- The card will not line up with the slot: Recheck that the correct slot covers were removed and that no case obstruction is blocking the bracket. Compare the card’s dimensions with your case clearance and confirm the exact model.
- The PC does not start after installation: Turn it off and disconnect power before checking that the card is fully seated and that all required GPU power plugs are connected. Consult the card and PSU manuals; do not guess at cable compatibility.
- The display is blank: Check that the monitor cable is connected to the graphics card’s display output and that the card’s power connectors are seated. If the system still does not display an image, shut it down and review the card maker’s troubleshooting guidance.
- The driver installer does not recognize the card or operating system: Verify that you selected the RX 9070 XT and the correct operating system on AMD’s support page, and check the current installer requirements. If using Auto-Detect and Install, confirm that the PC has an internet connection.
