To install an AIO liquid CPU cooler, first confirm that the cooler fits your CPU socket and case, then mount its radiator so the radiator’s highest point sits above the pump. Attach the socket-specific bracket and pump block, install the radiator fans, connect the pump and fans using the cooler and motherboard manuals, and verify operation before closing the case. Some coolers have thermal paste pre-applied; check before adding any.
Before you start: check compatibility and clearances
Do not assume a radiator will fit because its label gives a familiar size. Check the cooler and case manuals for the supported CPU socket, radiator dimensions and thickness, mounting positions, bracket requirements, and clearance around memory and other components. The included cables or controller may also affect how the cooler connects to your motherboard.

- Confirm the cooler supports your CPU socket and that you have the correct mounting hardware.
- Check that the case supports the radiator at your intended mounting position, including its thickness and the space needed for fans.
- Look for possible interference with memory, the motherboard, or nearby components.
- Identify the cooler’s pump and fan cables, controller requirements, and the relevant motherboard headers before assembly.
Compatibility details differ by cooler and case, so use their manuals rather than relying on a general radiator-size assumption. NZXT’s installation guide and Corsair’s radiator-mounting guidance offer model-specific examples.
Choose a radiator position
The key orientation principle is to keep the radiator’s highest point above the pump. Air in the loop can collect at the radiator instead of gathering at the pump. A top mount commonly achieves this when the case supports it; a front mount can also work.

- CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
- ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
- NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
- INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
- INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
Top mount
A top-mounted radiator is a common choice if the case provides the necessary clearance. NZXT recommends configuring the fans as exhaust for a top-mounted radiator in its guide. Treat that as guidance for its setup, not a universal airflow rule for every case.
Front mount
A front-mounted radiator is a viable alternative. Corsair prefers tubes at the bottom when practical. If the tubes must be at the top, keep the pump below the radiator’s highest point. The important concern is the radiator’s height relative to the pump, not a single orientation that suits every case.

- Simple, High-Performance All-in-One CPU Cooling: Renowned CORSAIR engineering delivers strong, low-noise cooling that helps your CPU reach its full potential
- Efficient, Low-Noise Pump: Keeps your coolant circulating at a high flow rate while generating a whisper-quiet 20 dBA
- Convex Cold Plate with Pre-Applied Thermal Paste: The slightly convex shape ensures maximum contact with your CPU’s integrated heat spreader, with thermal paste applied in an optimised pattern to speed up installation
- RS120 ARGB Fans: RS ARGB fans create strong airflow and high static pressure, with easy ARGB control via a compatible motherboard. CORSAIR AirGuide technology and Magnetic Dome bearings ensure great cooling performance and low noise
- Easy Daisy-Chained Connections: Reduce the wiring in your system by daisy-chaining your RS ARGB fans and connecting them to just one 4-pin PWM fan header and one +5V ARGB header
Before settling on a position, consider the case’s supported mounts and clearances, how the tubes will route, the direction of fan airflow, and access to nearby components. Neither the cited manufacturer guidance nor the available information establishes that top or front mounting always gives better temperatures across different cases.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInstall the pump block and radiator
- Prepare the socket hardware. Use the cooler manual to select the bracket and mounting hardware for your CPU socket. Do not substitute a bracket or assume all AIOs use the same mounting method.
- Check the cold plate. Look for thermal paste already applied to the cooler’s contact surface. If paste is present, do not add another layer over it. NZXT says its Kraken coolers ship with pre-applied paste; other models may differ.
- Attach the pump block. Position it as directed by the cooler manual and secure it with the specified hardware. For the design in its guide, NZXT recommends starting all retention screws loosely and tightening diagonally to help keep pressure even. Follow your model’s instructions if its mounting system differs.
- Install the fans and radiator. Orient the fans for the chosen airflow direction, then fasten the assembly using the screws supplied for the cooler and case. If a fan has direction arrows, check them before tightening the assembly. NZXT recommends exhaust airflow for its top-mounted configuration.
- Route the tubes without forcing them. Arrange them so they do not obstruct other components or put avoidable strain on the pump connections. Recheck that the radiator’s highest point remains above the pump.
Connect the pump, fans, and controls
There is no universal header map for every AIO and motherboard. Identify each cable using both manuals, then connect it to the header or controller specified for that hardware. Depending on the setup, labels may include AIO_PUMP, CPU_FAN, CPU_OPT, or SYS_FAN.

- Skeleton-Frame Pump Head Design – Unique pump head with vivid ARGB lighting, fully customizable via motherboard sync.
- Extreme Cooling Performance – High-density fins paired with powerful PWM ARGB radiator fans ensure optimized airflow and efficient heat transfer.

- Durable Build – Elastic high-density tubing and hydraulic bearing fans deliver long-lasting, quiet, and stable operation.
For example, Corsair’s instructions for the listed NAUTILUS models allow CPU_OPT or SYS_FAN if the motherboard has no AIO_PUMP header. That model-specific fallback is not a universal rule for other coolers. NZXT’s guide describes pump and fan connections for its own setup; follow your product’s wiring diagram rather than copying another model’s layout.
Check the installation before closing the case
Use the cooler’s manual or software instructions to check that the pump and fans are detected and operating. If a device is missing or a fan does not run, recheck the cable connections against the cooler and motherboard manuals before proceeding. The sources cited here do not establish one safe temperature threshold or commissioning checklist for every CPU and cooler, so use the guidance for your specific hardware.

If you remove and reinstall the cooler
Thermal paste instructions depend on the model and whether the cooler has already been mounted. A cooler with fresh, pre-applied paste does not need an extra layer on top. If you remove and reinstall a cooler, follow its manual’s cleaning and reapplication instructions: Corsair says to clean off the old pre-applied paste and apply a fresh layer for the models covered by its manual and quick-start material. A separate tube of paste is therefore conditional, not a requirement for every new installation.
