If your provider or workplace gives you connection details, you can add them manually in Settings. Work or school profiles are a separate, organization-managed option.
Choose the setup method that fits your VPN

Install a VPN using its iPhone app
- Choose the VPN service you intend to use and find its official app in the App Store. Check the app’s publisher before installing.
- Install and open the app, then sign in or create an account if its instructions require one.
- Follow the provider’s current setup prompts. The screens and account requirements vary by provider.
- If iOS asks to let the app add a VPN configuration, approve only if you chose and trust that provider. This permission lets the app configure a VPN connection on your device; it is not a reason to approve a request from an unfamiliar app.
- Use the app to connect. To check or manage the connection through iOS, open Settings and look for VPN; available controls can vary by iOS version and setup.
If the provider requires a configuration profile or a different installation flow, follow its current instructions rather than substituting generic steps.

Add a VPN configuration manually
Manual setup is for cases where your VPN provider or IT administrator has given you the required configuration values. Apple’s documented path is:
- Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > VPN.
- Tap Add VPN Configuration.
- Choose the configuration type and enter the values supplied by your provider or administrator.
- Save the configuration, then use the VPN controls in Settings to connect if your setup allows it.
The available connection type and authentication depend on the VPN server and how it is managed. Apple documents IKEv2/IPsec and SSL-VPN with an appropriate App Store client as supported Apple-platform approaches, but that does not mean every provider supports every option. Ask the provider or administrator which type and details to use; do not guess server names, usernames, passwords, shared secrets, or certificates. Apple’s setup instructions describe the Settings path.

Install or manage a work or school profile
A profile can configure settings for a corporate or school network. When iPhone asks to install one, review the information it displays about the profile’s contents and proceed only if you expected it from your organization. You can inspect installed profiles at Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. Apple explains how to install or remove configuration profiles.
Deleting a profile also deletes its associated settings, apps, and data. If a profile belongs to your employer or school, contact its IT support before removing it.

Managed VPN features are not universal personal settings
Per-app VPN and Always On VPN are capabilities used in managed deployments. Apple describes Always On VPN for iOS devices that are supervised and managed through device management; it is not a switch every personal iPhone user can enable. Your organization’s administrator determines whether these features are configured and which apps or traffic they cover. Apple’s deployment guidance for VPN covers these managed options.
Understand what an iPhone VPN does
A VPN can encrypt and route certain network traffic through a VPN service, which may hide your IP address from websites and services. It does not make you anonymous, protect every connection, prevent malware, or replace strong account security. Apple notes that some traffic needed for essential system services travels outside the VPN, so do not assume every iPhone connection uses the tunnel. Apple’s privacy overview describes this limitation.

Troubleshoot a VPN connection
If your connection stops working after setup, these checks can help identify a configuration conflict, but they are not guaranteed fixes for every problem.
- Check that the VPN app or configuration is enabled and consult the provider’s current support instructions for service-specific errors.
- Search Settings for VPN, profile, firewall, and filter to review related settings.
- Look for VPN or other third-party security software that could affect connectivity. Apple recommends checking for these apps and settings when troubleshooting network problems.
- If a work or school profile is involved, ask the organization’s IT support before changing or deleting it.
