To install and set up a TP-Link Tapo video doorbell, first identify its exact model and hardware version, then follow that model’s regional guide. Tapo doorbells differ: some are wired, some battery-powered, and some support both. Those differences affect wiring, existing-chime compatibility and continuous recording.

Before installation: identify your model

Check the model name and hardware version on the doorbell or its packaging before drilling or touching wiring. Open the matching support page and manual for your region; TP-Link says model and hardware-version availability varies by region, and instructions can differ. For example, the D210 support page lists resources for multiple hardware versions, while the D225 V1.6 download page provides its user guide and quick installation guide.

The steps below use TP-Link’s guidance for the dual-power D225/D235/TD25 family as an example, not as universal instructions for every Tapo doorbell. Check your package and guide for included parts; the D225 product listing includes items such as a Tapo Chime, mounting bracket, wedges, template, jumper, extension wires and fasteners.

Choose battery or hardwired power

Option What it means Important trade-off
Battery Mount the doorbell without connecting the existing doorbell wires. The battery must be detached for charging when depleted. TP-Link advertises up to eight months for D225 battery use, but says actual life varies with settings, usage, router specifications and environmental factors. It is an estimate, not a guarantee.
Hardwired, D225/D235/TD25 guidance TP-Link specifies existing wired doorbell service—not a battery-powered system—with an 8–24 V AC transformer rated at least 10 VA. Confirm the exact model’s requirements before using existing wiring. This voltage requirement is specific to the cited family.

For details, see TP-Link’s D225/D235/TD25 installation FAQ and the D225 product page.

Mount the doorbell

For the cited dual-power models, TP-Link describes two ways to attach the mounting bracket:

  • On an appropriate smooth surface, use the supplied adhesive. The guide describes it as one-time use and suitable for surfaces such as tile, glass, marble, metal, stainless steel and smooth walls.
  • For a screw mount, use the template to mark and drill holes, insert the anchors and fasten the bracket with screws. Route existing wires through the bracket if you are hardwiring.

For an uneven surface, the guide notes that the foam pad can go behind the bracket or wedge. Follow your exact model’s guide for orientation and supplied hardware.

If hardwiring, decide how to handle the existing chime

On the cited dual-power models, you must choose between keeping the traditional chime connected and bypassing it for Always-On Mode. TP-Link says Always-On Mode and 24/7 recording require bypassing the traditional chime with the included jumper. Without the jumper, the existing chime can be used, but TP-Link’s broader FAQ says continuous recording is unavailable in that arrangement.

  1. Switch off the circuit breaker before working at the existing chime. Confirm the circuit is off by ringing the existing doorbell several times, as TP-Link’s procedure directs.
  2. Photograph the old chime wiring before changing it.
  3. If you want Always-On Mode, install the included jumper across Front and Trans for a front doorbell, or Rear and Trans for a rear doorbell, following the exact model guide.
  4. If the chime has different terminal markings, stop and consult a licensed electrician rather than guessing.
  5. Refit the cover, then connect the doorbell wires as shown in the correct model guide.

TP-Link’s existing-chime FAQ distinguishes model types: wired-only models use their corresponding packaged wireless chime, while battery-only doorbells cannot connect to an existing chime circuit. Do not assume your old chime will work until you have checked your model and power arrangement.

  2. Tap the plus button, search for your exact doorbell model and select it.
  3. Follow the app’s on-screen setup prompts.

These are the steps in TP-Link’s Tapo setup guide. Use the exact model guide for LED meanings or reset steps; indicator patterns and onboarding prompts are not necessarily the same across the range.

Pair an optional Tapo Chime, Hub or smart speaker

To add a Tapo Chime or compatible Hub, open the doorbell’s live view and go to Device Settings > Doorbell > Paired Chimes > Add Chime/Hub, then follow the app instructions. TP-Link’s guide, last updated September 23, 2026, says the Tapo Chime connects over Wi-Fi and needs Wi-Fi and Internet access where it is placed. Supported Tapo Hubs can also act as chimes with compatible firmware. The guide also covers optional Alexa Echo and Google Assistant speakers or displays as chimes after setup on their respective platforms. See TP-Link’s chime setup guide.
