For most systems purchased in 2018 or later, follow the Gen 3 setup: start in the SimpliSafe app, connect and place the Base Station, then pair the keypad and add each device using its model-specific instructions. First check your system generation—Original SimpliSafe has a different setup path and its devices are no longer sold by SimpliSafe.
Identify your SimpliSafe system before you begin
SimpliSafe provides separate instructions for Gen 3 and Original SimpliSafe. The company says a system purchased new in 2018 or later is likely Gen 3, but check your keypad or confirm the generation with SimpliSafe before following a guide or buying add-ons. Start with the Base Station Installation Guide for Gen 3; Original owners should use the Original SimpliSafe installation guide.

Generation matters because the installation and pairing flows differ. SimpliSafe says it no longer sells devices for Original SimpliSafe. If you have that system and need hardware, ask SimpliSafe support about upgrade options rather than assuming a current device will pair with it.

1. Prepare the app and account
Install the SimpliSafe app on a phone or tablet. Sign in with the account used for your purchase, or create an account if needed, then choose the prompt to set up a new system.

2. Choose a location and power the Base Station
SimpliSafe calls the Base Station “the brains of your system.” Put it in a central, open area at least three feet above the floor, on a non-dense surface such as wood or glass. Avoid cabinets and closets, dense materials such as granite, concrete, or metal, and nearby electronics—including routers, televisions, and cable boxes—that could interfere with wireless communication.
SimpliSafe’s Gen 3 guide, updated June 30, 2026, lists up to 24 hours of Base Station battery backup and a 100 dB siren. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.

3. Connect the Base Station in the app
- In the app’s new-system setup flow, scan the QR code on the Base Station or enter its serial number.
- Keep your phone within three feet of the Base Station while the app connects.
- Select your Wi-Fi network and enter its password when prompted.
4. Create the Master PIN and confirm account details
Create a four-digit Master PIN. It is used to arm and disarm the system and access keypad functions. Confirm the monitoring details, including the system address and primary contacts. If you have not chosen a monitoring plan, the setup flow may ask you to make that optional choice; review the current terms in the app rather than relying on outdated pricing or plan information.

5. Install and pair the keypad
Finish Base Station setup before adding the keypad. Mount it near a frequently used entry. In the app, open the Add Device or Camera flow, choose Keypad, and follow the prompts, including removing the battery tab. For screw mounting, SimpliSafe says the bracket can be secured with the included screws and a Phillips-head screwdriver. Consult the Keypad Overview and Installation Guide for the exact steps.

6. Add sensors and cameras
Add the remaining devices through the app and follow the instructions for each exact model. SimpliSafe supports adhesive or screw mounting for sensors where the device guide permits it, but placement and testing requirements vary by device. Use the relevant How to Add New Products to My Existing SimpliSafe System instructions and the model-specific installation guide; do not assume one sensor’s recommended position or test procedure applies to another.
7. Review settings and test by model
Volume, alarm delays, and Wi-Fi settings are accessible through the app or keypad. Before relying on the system, follow the test instructions for each device model. There is no single final test procedure established for every SimpliSafe device, so use the model-specific guidance rather than treating a general check as sufficient.

Setup path for Original SimpliSafe
Original SimpliSafe has a separate installation sequence: begin with its Base Station, then install the keypad, followed by the remaining devices. SimpliSafe recommends placing the Original Base Station centrally, three to five feet above the floor and five feet away from major electronics. The Original keypad bracket can be attached with adhesive or screws. Follow the Original SimpliSafe installation guide rather than applying Gen 3 app instructions. Its guide lists an 85-decibel siren for Original systems; that specification does not describe Gen 3.
