Plug-in solar is currently available for household use in Great Britain, but not Northern Ireland. Before buying, check your permissions, the socket and circuit, and whether the product complies with the current GB interim specification. Mount it securely, connect it directly to a suitable socket as the manufacturer instructs, and follow current official guidance on registration.

What counts as a plug-in solar panel?

The GB Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification describes a system made up of one or more solar PV modules, a grid-following microinverter, a manufacturer-supplied lead fitted with a BS 1363 plug, and a mounting system. It is designed to connect to a UK mains socket.

The specification covers single-phase domestic devices with apparent power of no more than 800 VA. It allows one plug-in solar product per household, explaining that this limit keeps currents through the electrical connection to the consumer unit within safe levels. It excludes plug-in battery systems and solar devices integrated with batteries; those arrangements are not covered by this plug-in solar route.

These are requirements for products within the specification, not a blanket endorsement of imported, unverified or marketplace equipment. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) says only devices that comply with its interim specification can be sold and plugged in under the relevant regulatory amendment.

Is plug-in solar allowed where I live?

DESNZ announced that plug-in solar would be available across Great Britain from 27 August 2026. Energy Saving Trust says these devices are not currently permitted for use in Northern Ireland. Check current government guidance before buying, as the rules for this new product category may change.

Where What the current guidance says What to check
England Plug-in solar is available. Energy Saving Trust says England has introduced a Permitted Development Right to make it easier to install on houses. Check whether the right applies to your property and whether other planning restrictions apply.
Scotland and Wales Plug-in solar is available in Great Britain, but Energy Saving Trust advises checking the applicable local requirements. Ask your local planning authority if you are unsure, particularly for a listed building or a home in a conservation area.
Northern Ireland Energy Saving Trust says plug-in solar is not currently permitted for use. Do not assume the Great Britain rules apply; check current Northern Ireland guidance before considering an installation.

Do I need permission before buying?

Planning permission is only one part of the permission check. If you rent, own a leasehold flat, or live in a managed building, get approval from the landlord, freeholder or building manager before buying. Check your lease before attaching panels to a balcony, railings, an external wall, a roof or a communal area. Drilling or adding an outdoor socket makes explicit approval especially important.

Listed buildings and properties in conservation areas may have additional planning restrictions. Contact your local authority or planning office if you are uncertain. Flats and higher-risk buildings can also raise building or fire-safety concerns. Ask the responsible building manager before work involving cladding, a timber balcony or an external wall; what counts as a higher-risk building differs across UK nations.

Check with your buildings and contents insurer whether the proposed outdoor installation is covered. Do not proceed on the assumption that planning approval, where needed, also covers landlord, lease, building-management or insurance requirements.

Will the location generate useful electricity?

Energy Saving Trust prefers an unshaded, south-facing position. East- or west-facing panels can work but generate less; north-facing or shaded locations are not recommended. Nearby buildings, trees, railings or roof features can cast shade, so consider the panel’s actual position through the day rather than relying only on the direction it faces.

Check that the mounting surface can carry the panels and that the system can be fixed against movement and wind. A garage or outbuilding roof must support the weight. Do not mount panels on a wooden fence without professional advice. If the structure or support is uncertain, ask a suitable professional before installing.

Do I have a suitable socket to plug the panels into?

The device must connect directly to a suitable mains socket; do not use an extension lead. Energy Saving Trust advises that the socket’s circuit should not also supply lighting or hardwired appliances such as a boiler or cooker. If you cannot establish which circuit serves the socket, ask a qualified electrician rather than guessing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An outdoor socket must be weatherproof and installed by a qualified electrician. Get an electrician’s advice if your consumer unit has older rewireable fuses, you are unsure about the condition of the wiring, or a socket needs to be moved or installed.

Energy Saving Trust also recommends professional advice if the total panel power exceeds 960 W. This is a trigger in its consumer checklist to consult an electrician; it is not the same measure as the specification’s limit of 800 VA apparent power for a plug-in device.

  • Usage Precautions 1: Inspect the solar panels every two weeks for any obstructions such as foreign objects, leaves, or bird droppings. Clean any obstructions immediately.
  • Usage Precautions 2: If the current exceeds the maximum current capacity of the connecting materials, it will cause the materials to overheat and ultimately burn out the solar panels. Therefore, the maximum number of panels that can be connected in parallel is 3 panels in parallel or 3 panels in series.
  • Usage Precautions 3: Avoid impacts or collisions to the panels during installation or handling. Please contact customer service immediately for assistance.

How do I install a plug-in solar panel safely?

  1. Confirm the product and permissions. Check that plug-in solar is permitted where you live, obtain any landlord, freeholder or building-manager approval, and check relevant planning and insurance requirements.
  2. Check the product before purchase. Choose a device compliant with the current GB interim product specification from a registered seller. Confirm what mounting hardware is supplied and that it suits the surface and location. A product described as “balcony solar” is not necessarily compliant.
  3. Check the electrical supply. Identify a suitable socket and circuit using the checks above. Arrange a qualified electrician if an outdoor socket is needed, the wiring or consumer unit raises concerns, or the support installation needs professional advice.
  4. Mount the panels as instructed. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, use suitable fixings and anchors, and secure the panels so they cannot move or blow over. Avoid concealed pipes and cables, damp pathways and damage to weatherproofing. Stop and seek professional advice if you are unsure about the roof or support surface.
  5. Connect the device as specified. Use the supplied plug and connect it directly to the suitable socket. Do not add an extension lead or improvise a different connection.
  6. Register the system using current instructions. Energy Saving Trust says to register after installation. The consumer guidance reviewed does not specify the plug-in-specific process or deadline; check current DESNZ, Energy Networks Association and local distribution network operator (DNO) instructions rather than assuming that older steps apply unchanged.

What does the safety evidence establish?

DESNZ published a representative plug-in solar electrical safety study on 16 June 2026. It combined standards-based analysis, laboratory testing and simulations of representative UK domestic circuits under different operating conditions and fault scenarios. For the systems and conditions tested, DESNZ reported stable behaviour, effective operation of protective devices, and no evidence of sustained unsafe energisation or unacceptable thermal effects.

The study also reported variation in export-limitation behaviour and electromagnetic compatibility. Its findings support a conditional conclusion about the tested systems, not a claim that every product sold under a similar label is equally safe. Buying a compliant product and following its instructions remain important.

What can I expect from the output and savings?

DESNZ’s 26 August 2026 Great Britain launch announcement estimated savings of up to £110 a year. That is a government estimate, not a guaranteed saving or a prediction for every household. Actual results depend on the site and household; orientation, shading and when electricity is generated and used all matter. An unshaded south-facing position is preferred, while east- or west-facing panels generate less.

When comparing kits, focus on whether the product meets the current specification and comes from a registered seller, its rated AC output, and whether the microinverter limits output below the panels’ rated capacity. Also check mounting compatibility, cable reach to a suitable direct socket, the manufacturer’s support and warranty, and the repair route. Do not assume a battery-connected kit is covered by this specification.

What should I do if something goes wrong?

Do not try to repair the panel or inverter yourself. Report faults to the manufacturer and follow its instructions. If you suspect a problem with the socket, wiring or consumer unit, stop using the device if it is safe to do so and contact a qualified electrician. For uncertainty about structural support or fixings, get professional advice before continuing to use the installation.

DESNZ says it intends to develop enduring standards as evidence from deployment accumulates. Because the product rules and registration guidance can change, check the latest official instructions before purchasing or installing.
