The repositories for Ubuntu Noble and Debian Bookworm provide native arm64 packages, so you normally do not need emulation or an x86_64 binary. First confirm that the machine, operating-system release and package architecture match; then run a local conversion test and a URL test.
What ARM64 support means
Linux usually reports 64-bit ARM as aarch64, while Debian-family package metadata uses arm64. They describe the same 64-bit ARM instruction set for this purpose. The upstream wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 release added 64-bit ARM support, and the packaging project publishes distribution-specific ARM64 or aarch64 artifacts.
Do not confuse ARM64 with armhf (32-bit ARM) or amd64/x86_64 (64-bit Intel and AMD). A package can be valid but still unusable if it targets a different CPU or a different operating-system release.
1. Confirm the host before installing
Run these commands on the machine where wkhtmltopdf will execute:

I2S, PCM, and SDIO do not share the same pins so most audio peripherals will need to be re-routed. Le Potato features additional GPIOs and SARADC pins on separate headers.

Record the ID and VERSION_ID values because an Ubuntu package should not be mixed with Debian libraries, and a package for one Ubuntu release may not be suitable for another.
2. Preferred method: install the distribution package
For Debian or Ubuntu ARM64, use the operating system’s package manager:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install wkhtmltopdfUbuntu Noble lists wkhtmltopdf_0.12.6-2build2_arm64.deb; Debian Bookworm publishes wkhtmltopdf_0.12.6-2+b1 for arm64. The exact revision can differ by release. The package-manager route is preferred because apt selects dependencies for the installed release, records the files in the package database and receives normal distribution updates. Ubuntu’s package guidance specifically recommends using a package manager rather than downloading a package manually.
Ubuntu repository availability
On Ubuntu, the package is in the universe component. If apt reports no candidate, check that the component is enabled, refresh indexes and try again:

sudo apt install wkhtmltopdfThe apt-cache policy output should show a candidate version. If it remains empty, verify the release reported by /etc/os-release and the configured sources before trying a third-party file.
Debian repository availability
On Debian Bookworm, the archive contains a native arm64 build. Use the same apt commands and let apt choose the Bookworm dependency versions. Avoid copying libraries from another Debian release to make a manually downloaded binary start.
3. When an upstream artifact is appropriate
Use an upstream packaging artifact only when the distribution build is unavailable or lacks a feature you require. The packaging releases include a Bookworm arm64 .deb and aarch64 RPMs for AlmaLinux; its build matrix also defines ARM64 targets for Debian and Ubuntu and aarch64 targets for Amazon Linux and openSUSE. Select the file whose operating system, release and architecture exactly match your host.

Inspect a Debian package before installing
After downloading the exact file supplied for your release, inspect its metadata:
dpkg-deb -I ./wkhtmltox_*_arm64.deb | sed -n '1,20p'Check the architecture, package version and dependency fields. Install a local Debian package through apt, not by forcing dpkg alone, so dependencies can be resolved:
sudo apt install ./wkhtmltox_*_arm64.debReplace the wildcard with the actual filename when more than one artifact is present. Never substitute an amd64, armhf or unrelated-release file. For RPM-based systems, use the matching aarch64 package and the system’s RPM tooling; do not mix Debian and RPM packages.
Provenance and reproducibility
Record the download URL, checksum, package version, distribution release and architecture in deployment notes. The upstream release and packaging repositories are archived, so pinning the artifact that worked is important for repeatable builds. The packaging release page shows later 0.12.6.1-3 artifacts, including Bookworm arm64 and AlmaLinux aarch64 packages, with that build published in May 2023; your repository may provide a different revision.
4. Verify the executable and perform a real conversion
Installation is not complete until the binary can create a readable document. Check its path and version first:

Test a live URL separately
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com example.pdfA URL conversion exercises DNS, outbound HTTPS, certificates, redirects, JavaScript timing and the target site’s access policy. If network access is restricted, the local-file test remains the valid installation check.
How wkhtmltopdf processes input
Debian describes wkhtmltopdf as a command-line converter that accepts a URL, a local HTML file or standard input and writes a PDF or image. The executable is therefore suitable for scripts, queues and service workers, but those environments must provide the same fonts, permissions and network access as an interactive shell.

“Package ‘wkhtmltopdf’ has no installation candidate”
Confirm the distribution and release, ensure the repository component containing the package is enabled (Ubuntu’s package is in universe), then run sudo apt update. If the archive for that release genuinely does not publish ARM64, choose a matching upstream artifact rather than an x86_64 download.
“Wrong architecture” or an unstartable binary
Run uname -m and inspect the file with dpkg-deb -I. The host should report aarch64 and the Debian package should say Architecture: arm64. Obtain an artifact for the same release. An amd64 binary cannot be made native by renaming it, and an armhf package is 32-bit.
Missing shared libraries
A manually copied binary often fails because runtime libraries are absent. Remove that copy and install the distribution package, or run sudo apt install ./package.deb for a local artifact. Debian-family packaging lists dependencies such as fontconfig, FreeType, X11 libraries, font packages and zlib. Let apt choose versions instead of copying libraries from another release.
Blank pages or missing characters
Install fonts appropriate to the document and repeat the local-file test with the required characters. Rendering depends on the fonts installed on the operating system; the packaging dependency set includes font packages, but a document may still require additional language fonts. Compare the generated PDF on the same host where the command runs.

Write to a directory the invoking user can modify and use an absolute output path while diagnosing:

Different behavior after an upgrade
Capture wkhtmltopdf --version, ID/VERSION_ID, package origin and artifact checksum. Distribution revisions and upstream packaging builds can differ in patched Qt behavior, fonts and dependencies. Pin the known-good package in production and retest after changing the base image or operating-system release.

Operational notes for production
- Pin both the operating-system release and wkhtmltopdf package revision in images or provisioning scripts.
- Keep the local HTML smoke test in deployment checks; add a URL test only where outbound networking is intentional.
- Use absolute input and output paths in services, and ensure the service account can read assets and write the destination.
- Log the version, exit status and output file size. A zero exit status should be paired with a file-opening check.
- Install the fonts your documents need, especially when generating multilingual invoices or reports.
