That recommendation comes from the third-party guide og-image.org, which also reports 600 × 315 pixels as a minimum, an 8 MB ceiling, and support for PNG, JPEG, GIF, and WebP. These figures are not confirmed as current official Meta requirements in the Open Graph Protocol documentation, so treat them as working guidance rather than a guaranteed platform specification.
The Open Graph Protocol defines what og:image means and how to describe it. It does not itself set Facebook’s current pixel dimensions, encoding rules, or maximum file size. The safest implementation is an absolute image URL followed by the protocol’s optional structured properties: secure URL, MIME type, width, height, and alternative text.
What Facebook reads from an OG image
og:image is the URL that represents a page or other object in Open Graph metadata. When a page is shared, a crawler can use that URL as the preview image. The protocol also defines properties that describe the selected image:
og:image:secure_url— an HTTPS version of the image URL when you provide one.og:image:type— the image MIME type, such asimage/jpeg.og:image:widthandog:image:height— the image’s pixel dimensions.og:image:alt— descriptive alternative text for the image, not a caption.
These properties describe the resource; they do not turn an unresponsive, missing, or incorrectly typed image URL into a usable preview. Make the image available at the URL you publish and keep the structured properties next to the corresponding root declaration.

For a new site, 1200 × 630 is a sensible production target because it follows the widely circulated Facebook-oriented advice and gives you a 1.91:1 composition. Keep important text, logos, and faces away from the outer edges so a crop in another surface does not remove essential information. Choose an encoding based on the artwork: JPEG is usually practical for photographs, while PNG is useful for crisp lettering or transparency. Those are production choices, not promises about what Facebook currently accepts.
Correct HTML markup
Place Open Graph elements in the document’s <head>. The following pattern uses a 1200 × 630 JPEG as an example:

og:imageidentifies the image URL that represents the page.og:image:secure_urlsupplies the secure counterpart when it differs from the root URL. If both values are identical, keeping both is still a clear declaration.og:image:typestates the MIME type your server intends to return.- The width and height provide the declared pixel dimensions.
og:image:altdescribes the visual content. Write what a person needs to know about the image; do not use it as a marketing caption.
Keep an image’s structured properties immediately after its og:image line. This makes the association unambiguous when you publish more than one image.
Using more than one image
The protocol treats repeated og:image declarations as an array. When values conflict, the first value is preferred. Put your primary sharing image first, then place that image’s width, height, type, secure URL, and alt text before declaring the next image.

A practical implementation checklist
- Create a deliberately composed social image rather than reusing a tiny thumbnail.
- Target the widely reported 1200 × 630 canvas, while recognizing that the figure is secondary guidance rather than a published protocol limit.
- Use a complete image URL in
og:image. - Make the declared MIME type agree with the file your server returns.
- Declare width and height accurately; do not copy values from a design file after the exported image has been resized.
- Write useful
og:image:alttext that describes the visual. - Put the preferred image first when several images are present.
- Inspect the page source, not only the rendered page, to confirm the tags are in the HTML head.
- Check the image URL directly and verify that it returns an image rather than an error document or an HTML login page.
Why a Facebook preview image may be missing
The root property is absent or malformed
If the page does not contain a valid og:image property, there is no protocol-level image URL to select. Check spelling, quotation marks, and that the tag is emitted in the server response.
The URL does not return the intended file
A typo, redirect chain, access control rule, or a server response with the wrong content can prevent a crawler from obtaining the image. Open the exact URL in a clean browser session and inspect the response headers and body.
The metadata describes a different image
When several images are declared, the first one has preference. Reorder the declarations if the wrong artwork appears, and keep each image’s structured properties beside the image they describe.

The declared dimensions or type are inaccurate
Incorrect width, height, or MIME values make the metadata less trustworthy. Regenerate the values from the exported asset and ensure the server’s content type matches the actual encoding.
The image is too large for the guidance you are following
The 8 MB ceiling is a third-party report, not a confirmed current Meta rule. Nevertheless, compressing an unnecessarily large asset improves delivery and keeps you within that commonly cited limit.
Testing before you publish
- View the raw HTML returned for the page and search for
og:image. - Confirm that the first image is the intended primary artwork.
- Copy the exact image URL into a separate browser tab and verify the asset loads without a login or interactive step.
- Compare the exported pixel dimensions with
og:image:widthandog:image:height. - Compare the actual file encoding with
og:image:type. - Read the alt text as if the image were unavailable; revise it if it does not explain the visual.
- Share a page after each material metadata change so you can isolate whether the problem is markup, ordering, or delivery.
Do not assume that a visible image in your own browser proves that a sharing crawler can retrieve it. The page source and the direct asset URL are the two checks that reveal most implementation mistakes.
Performance and maintenance choices
Design for the crop, not only the canvas
A 1.91:1 image is wide. Keep logos and words inside a central safe area, use strong contrast, and avoid placing essential details against the extreme top or bottom edge. Maintain a separate source file so you can export a replacement without changing the page’s semantic metadata.

Keep declarations synchronized
If an image is replaced, update its URL, MIME type, dimensions, and alt text together. Stale structured properties are especially easy to create when a build system fingerprints filenames or performs automatic image resizing.
Prefer a stable asset URL
Changing the URL on every deployment makes it harder to reason about which image a previously shared page references. If your deployment system must version filenames, update the page metadata at the same time and test the new URL directly.
