Check the space requirement and storage options
Steam’s support listing gives The Witcher 3 a requirement of 60 GB available space and says its system requirements changed on 2026-09-29. Check the current listing before installing rather than relying on older storage figures: Steam Support: The Witcher 3.
If the Deck’s internal storage does not have enough free space, you can use a compatible microSD card. Valve specifies a high-speed microSD slot with support for UHS-I SD, SDXC, and SDHC cards in its Steam Deck technical specifications. A card is optional; check your available space and library before deciding whether you need additional storage.

If the game will not launch
Start with Steam’s basic advice: install any available SteamOS updates and restart the Deck before trying more involved changes. If the problem continues, Steam documents a per-game compatibility setting. This is a general troubleshooting option, not a confirmed fix specific to The Witcher 3.
- Open Library and highlight The Witcher 3.
- Press the game’s Menu button, then open Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then choose a Proton version. Steam suggests trying the latest Proton version.
For the general troubleshooting guidance, see Steam Support’s basic troubleshooting guide and Steam’s compatibility guidance.

If performance is poor
Steam recommends trying a lower graphics preset or reducing individual graphics settings. The available information does not establish a best configuration, frame rate, or battery-life estimate for this game on Deck, so adjust settings to address the issue you see rather than relying on an unverified preset.
