You can play an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc game on an Xbox Series S, but you cannot convert the disc using the Series S itself. First, use a disc-drive Xbox One or Xbox Series X to claim the disc-to-digital license; then sign in to the same Microsoft account on the Series S and download the game. Keep the qualifying disc: Microsoft’s license rules make continued possession a condition of access.
What you need to know before starting
- A disc-drive Xbox for the claim: Xbox names Xbox One and Xbox Series X as supported devices. Series S has no disc drive and cannot perform the physical-disc step. Xbox Series S specifications
- An eligible disc: The feature covers supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, but not every disc qualifies. Eligibility can change for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons. Check the title at the time you try to claim it. Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules
- The same Microsoft account: The entitlement is a digital game license tied to the account that claims it.
- Continued possession of the disc: The license remains conditional on having the qualifying disc. Microsoft may revalidate eligibility and suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess it. Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules
Xbox announced the feature for Xbox Insiders on August 26, 2026. Windows Central reported that it became available to all players on September 29, 2026; that public-rollout date is based on secondary reporting. Xbox Wire announcement Windows Central report

How to claim the disc-to-digital license and install the game
- Check eligibility. Confirm that your particular disc and game are supported. Xbox said the feature starts with thousands of titles, not a precisely counted or permanently fixed catalog. Xbox Wire announcement Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules
- Use a supported disc-drive console. Insert the disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X. A Series S cannot read it, and an external optical drive is not a supported workaround.
- Launch the game. Start the game from the inserted disc on the disc-drive Xbox to claim or receive the digital license. The Xbox announcement describes this claim process for supported discs. Xbox Wire announcement
- Sign in on the Series S. Use the Microsoft account that received the license.
- Find and download the game. Open your digital game library or Ready to Install, select the title, and install it on the Series S. Series S supports digital games only. Xbox Series S specifications
- Keep the qualifying disc. Do not treat the download as proof of unconditional ownership; Microsoft’s stated rules make continued possession of that disc part of the license. Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules
Disc-to-digital is different from ordinary disc installation
With ordinary disc play, a compatible game installs from the disc, but you keep the disc in the drive to play. The disc serves as the physical access check. Disc-to-digital is a separate entitlement process: a supported disc is used on a supported Xbox to claim a limited digital license, after which the game can be downloaded to a disc-free console under Xbox digital-game rules. Which console can perform the claim?
| Option | Can claim a supported disc? | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One with a disc drive | Yes, for eligible discs | Xbox names Xbox One as a supported claim device. Using one already in your household or borrowing one may avoid buying extra hardware. Eligibility is title-specific. Xbox Wire announcement |
| Xbox Series X | Yes, for eligible discs | Xbox names Series X as a supported claim device; it has a UHD Blu-ray drive. Check eligibility for the particular title. Xbox Wire announcement Xbox Series X specifications |
| Xbox Series S | No | It is an all-digital console and cannot read game discs, including with a generic external optical drive. It can install a digital license claimed elsewhere. Xbox Series S specifications |
If you do not have access to a disc-drive Xbox, a helper console is an optional route, not a requirement to use the Series S generally. Compare the cost of acquiring one with the games you hope to claim, and check each title’s eligibility first.

If your disc or game does not qualify
The disc-to-digital feature is title-specific, and Microsoft can add or remove eligibility. If a game is unsupported, legitimate alternatives are to use a digital license you already own or buy the digital edition. Installing files, copying them to USB storage, moving them between consoles, or connecting storage does not grant a game license. A USB hard drive or storage expansion can add space, but cannot make a Series S read a disc. Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules Xbox Series S specifications
