You can manually install a WordPress plugin or theme in two practical ways: upload its ZIP file from the WordPress dashboard, or transfer its extracted folder to the server with SFTP. Dashboard ZIP upload is the normal choice when you have administrator access; SFTP is the fallback when automatic installation is unavailable or a web upload cannot handle the archive. In either case, installation only places the files on the site. You must activate the plugin or theme before WordPress uses it.

What “manual installation” means in WordPress
Manual installation means you supply the plugin or theme package yourself instead of selecting it from the built-in directory and letting WordPress fetch it. The package is normally a ZIP file downloaded from a trusted developer or marketplace. You either upload that ZIP through the dashboard or extract it and copy the resulting folder to the correct WordPress directory.

Official WordPress guidance treats direct file transfer as a rare fallback intended for advanced users, particularly when the server is not configured to allow automatic installs.
- Plugins belong in
wp-content/plugins. - Themes belong in
wp-content/themes. - Each plugin or theme must have its own folder inside the relevant directory.
- Files are not active merely because they were uploaded; activation is a separate step.
Choose the installation method before you begin

Use SFTP rather than unencrypted FTP whenever your host offers both. Ask the host for the SFTP hostname, port, username, authentication method, and the directory that contains wp-admin, wp-content, and wp-includes. Keep a fresh backup of the database and files before replacing an existing extension, especially on a production site.

Prepare the package and check its structure
Download from a source you trust
Obtain the ZIP from the project’s official distribution channel or a vendor you recognize. Avoid packages that have been modified or redistributed without a verifiable source. A plugin or theme can execute code with the privileges of your WordPress installation, so provenance matters more than convenience.
Inspect the ZIP before uploading
Open the archive on your computer. A normal plugin ZIP contains one top-level plugin folder with the plugin’s PHP files inside it. A theme ZIP contains one top-level theme folder, usually including a stylesheet and template files. Some downloads contain an outer “package” folder with documentation, licensing files, and a second ZIP inside it. Upload the actual plugin or theme ZIP, not a documentation bundle.

A doubled path such as wp-content/plugins/example-package/example-plugin/ can prevent WordPress from detecting the extension, depending on how the package is arranged.
Check compatibility and requirements
Read the package’s stated WordPress and PHP requirements and its installation notes. If a plugin requires another plugin, treat that requirement as a separate installation: WordPress.org’s plugin guidance says the required plugin must be installed manually by searching for it, uploading its ZIP, or placing it in the plugins folder. Install the dependency before activating the extension that needs it.
Install a plugin with a dashboard ZIP upload
- Sign in to the WordPress administrator account.
- Open Plugins > Add New.
- Choose Upload Plugin. WordPress may display this as a button near the top of the Add Plugins screen.
- Select the plugin’s ZIP file from your computer.
- Click Install Now and wait for the installation result. Do not close the page while the archive is being unpacked.
- When WordPress reports a successful installation, select Activate Plugin.
- Return to Plugins > Installed Plugins and confirm that the plugin appears and is marked active.
If the screen reports that the package is missing a valid plugin header, you probably selected the wrong ZIP or the archive has an extra directory level. Extract the download, locate the archive that contains the actual plugin folder, and upload that file instead. If WordPress reports that the destination folder already exists, you are installing over an existing copy; use the update procedure below rather than creating a second folder.

Update a plugin by uploading a new ZIP
Dashboard replacement
For a plugin that is already installed, the dashboard may offer a replacement choice after you upload its ZIP. A commonly shown control is Replace current with uploaded. The exact wording is not guaranteed across WordPress releases, so read the confirmation screen carefully before proceeding. Confirm that the uploaded package is the intended plugin and that you have a backup or a tested rollback plan.
Replacement updates the plugin files while retaining the plugin’s existing data in the database unless the plugin itself includes a migration or uninstall routine. After the replacement finishes, visit Plugins > Installed Plugins, verify the version and activate it if WordPress left it inactive. Check the site’s key pages and the plugin’s settings before declaring the update complete.
SFTP replacement
When you update by file transfer, extract the new ZIP locally and upload the new plugin folder to wp-content/plugins. The practical file-transfer route is to replace the existing folder with the new one. Preserve the old folder outside the web root until you have confirmed that the new version works, or take a complete backup first so you can restore it cleanly.
Do not combine files from two versions casually. A partial upload can leave obsolete files beside new ones or omit files that the new release expects. Upload the complete extracted folder, then check the Plugins screen and activate the plugin if necessary.
Install a plugin by SFTP or a file manager
- Download the plugin ZIP and extract it on your computer.
- Connect to the server with an SFTP client, or open the host’s file manager.
- Navigate to the WordPress installation directory, then open
wp-content/plugins. - Upload the complete extracted plugin folder. Do not upload only individual PHP files.
- Wait for the transfer to finish and verify that the folder contains the plugin’s main files at the expected level.
- Sign in to WordPress and open Plugins > Installed Plugins.
- Locate the newly uploaded plugin and click Activate.
This method bypasses the browser-based upload step, so it is useful when the dashboard cannot install packages. It does not bypass other causes of failure: an incompatible plugin, incorrect ownership, insufficient permissions, a missing dependency, or a damaged archive can still prevent activation. If the plugin does not appear, recheck the directory and the folder nesting before changing permissions.

Install a theme with a dashboard ZIP upload
- Sign in to the WordPress administrator account.
- Open Appearance > Themes.
- Choose Add New, then select Upload.
- Select the theme ZIP file and click Install Now.
- When installation completes, choose Activate if you want the new theme to control the site immediately.
- Open the site in a separate browser tab and check the homepage, a post, a page, navigation, and any important widgets or blocks.
A theme can be installed without being active, which lets you prepare it while the current design remains live. A theme ZIP that contains an outer documentation directory, a child theme, or several files instead of one theme folder will not install correctly until you select the proper archive.
Install a theme by SFTP or FTP
- Extract the theme archive on your computer.
- Connect to the server with SFTP; use plain FTP only when no encrypted option is available and the host specifically requires it.
- Open the WordPress installation directory and navigate to
wp-content/themes. - Upload the complete extracted theme folder.
- In WordPress, open Appearance > Themes.
- Find the uploaded theme and choose Activate when you are ready to use it.
For a child theme, upload the child theme and its parent theme separately if the parent is not already installed. Activate the child theme, not the parent, when the child theme’s documentation requires that arrangement. Themes purchased outside the WordPress.org directory generally do not have a WordPress.org support forum; support is normally provided by the vendor that supplied the package.
Manage installed plugins and themes after installation
Activate or deactivate a plugin
Open Plugins > Installed Plugins. Select Activate to enable a plugin or Deactivate to stop it without deleting its files. Deactivation is the safer first response when a plugin causes an error because it leaves the package available for troubleshooting or reactivation.
Delete a plugin
Deactivate the plugin first, then choose Delete from the Plugins screen if you no longer need it. Read the plugin’s documentation before deletion: some extensions retain settings, while others remove data during an uninstall process. If the dashboard cannot delete it, remove only the matching folder from wp-content/plugins through SFTP after confirming its exact name.

Use Appearance > Themes to preview available themes, activate another theme, or open a theme’s details. Never delete the active theme. Activate a different theme first, then remove the unused theme from its details screen or delete its folder from wp-content/themes after taking a backup.

Keep a change record
Record the package name, version, source, installation date, and whether it has dependencies. A short change log makes it easier to identify which extension introduced a problem and to reproduce the setup on another site.

WP-CLI is appropriate when you have shell access and need consistent commands across environments. Run commands from the WordPress installation directory, or supply the correct path as required by your server setup. Confirm the target site before executing a change.

The bracketed value in wp plugin activate [plugin-name] is a placeholder for the actual plugin directory name; do not type the brackets unless that is genuinely the slug. WP-CLI is especially useful for scripted deployments, but it does not remove the need to check compatibility, dependencies, backups, and the resulting site behavior.
Troubleshoot the common failure messages
“The package could not be installed” or an upload timeout
- Confirm that you uploaded the actual plugin or theme ZIP rather than a bundle containing documentation.
- Try the extracted-folder method over SFTP, which avoids the browser upload path and its host-specific size or execution limits.
- Ask the host whether the account permits writing to the WordPress directory.
“Destination folder already exists”
An earlier copy is already present. If you intend an update, use the dashboard’s replacement option when it is offered, or replace the complete folder through SFTP after making a backup. Do not create a second folder with a suffix and assume WordPress will merge the two installations.
The plugin or theme does not appear
Check that the folder is directly inside wp-content/plugins or wp-content/themes, not one level deeper. Confirm that the transfer completed and that the account running WordPress can read the files. A package without the expected plugin header or theme stylesheet will not be recognized.
Activation produces a fatal error or a blank page
Use the hosting control panel, recovery mode, or SFTP to deactivate the last extension you changed. If you cannot reach the dashboard, rename that plugin’s folder temporarily so WordPress cannot load it, then restore the original folder name after diagnosing the issue. Check the package’s stated WordPress and PHP requirements and install any required dependency before trying again.
The site looks wrong after activating a theme
Switch back to the previously working theme from Appearance > Themes or by using the host’s recovery tools. Check whether the new theme expects a parent theme, setup wizard, required plugin, menus, widgets, or a particular page configuration. Keep the old theme installed until the replacement has passed your checks.

- Confirm you have administrator access for dashboard uploads or valid SFTP credentials for file transfer.
- Download the package from a trusted source and inspect the archive’s top-level folder.
- Back up the database and files before replacing an active plugin or theme.
- Install dependencies before activating the extension that requires them.
- Upload complete folders to the correct
wp-contentdirectory. - Activate only after WordPress reports a successful installation.
- Test the homepage, key content types, forms, navigation, and the administrator area after a change.
- Keep the previous working package or a restorable backup until the new version is proven stable.
- Document the version, source, date, and any settings changed.
Which method should you use?
Choose dashboard ZIP upload when you can log in as an administrator and the package fits the host’s web upload limits. It has the fewest moving parts and puts activation in the normal WordPress interface. Choose SFTP when the dashboard cannot install packages, when you need to recover a broken installation, or when transferring the archive through the browser is impractical. Choose WP-CLI when the work is repeated, scripted, or performed across multiple environments.
Regardless of the method, the essential sequence is the same: obtain a trustworthy package, place its complete folder in the correct directory, verify compatibility and dependencies, activate it deliberately, and test the site before moving on. Manual installation gives you control over the files; careful backups and a reversible change process keep that control from becoming an outage.
