To install a game in GOG GALAXY, install the client from GOG, sign in with the account that owns the game, select it in your library, and click Install. When installation finishes, select the game and click Play. You can also change the default game-install and temporary-update folders, or use GOG’s offline backup installers instead of installing through the client.
The steps below cover both the client route and the standalone-installer alternative. Install the GOG GALAXY client
GALAXY is GOG’s optional application for managing and installing games through a client. If you want to use that in-client flow, begin with the installer provided by GOG rather than assuming the game itself is already installed.

- Open GOG’s official GALAXY installation instructions and download the client installer from GOG.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow its on-screen instructions to complete setup. The setup process is guided by the prompts displayed during installation.
- Open GALAXY and sign in with the GOG account that owns the game you want to install. The game-install flow begins from a game in that account’s library.
GOG describes GALAXY as an optional application. Using the client is therefore a choice, not a required preliminary step for every GOG game. If you prefer not to use it, you can install a game with its offline backup installer instead. These are different routes: the client route starts inside GALAXY, while the offline route uses files downloaded from your GOG account/library through a browser.

The walkthrough here does not specify a particular GALAXY version or universal operating-system requirements. Check GOG’s current installation instructions and the prompts on your own system rather than relying on a version number or set of controls that may not match your setup.
Install a game from your library
Once the client is installed and open, use the account that owns the game. The standard sequence is to locate the title in the library, start its installation, wait for that operation to finish, and then launch it from the game page.
- In GALAXY, open your library or Owned games view and select the game you want.
- Click Install, then follow the prompts for that game’s installation. Read the prompts before confirming any available choices; the exact options and wording can vary by title.
- Wait for installation to finish. GOG’s instructions for a completed installation describe the game appearing in the left sidebar, with Play available.
- Select the game and click Play to launch it.
Install and Play refer to different stages. Selecting Install begins putting the game on the chosen destination; Play is the action to use after installation completes. If you are still waiting for an installation to finish, the next step is not to repeat the client setup process but to check the installation’s status and any message GALAXY displays.

In particular, do not assume that a missing library entry means the files are corrupt: E1 refers to a corrupted local game copy, which is a different reported problem.
Game-specific prompts matter. Some titles may present options that others do not, and interface labels can change over time. Follow what GALAXY displays for the selected game rather than expecting every title to have identical screens or installation controls.
Choose where games and downloads are stored
GALAXY has separate folder settings for installed games, temporary game-update files, and other downloads such as backup installers and bonus content. These are not all the same destination. Changing the games folder affects where installed games are placed; the temporary game-update folder is a separate setting; and the other-downloads folder is for items such as backup installers and bonus content.
To review or change the destinations, open the cogwheel menu, choose Settings, and select the Installing, updating tab. Review the folder fields there and change the relevant destination. If you are trying to change where an installed game goes, use the games installation folder field; if you mean temporary update files or other downloads, check the corresponding field instead.

It is worth checking these settings before starting an installation or update, especially if you do not want files placed in the default locations. Confirm which folder is selected for the operation you are about to perform. The settings distinguish the installed-game location from temporary update data and other downloads, so changing one should not be treated as changing all of them.
Check the selected destination before starting an installation or update: available disk space and access to that location can affect whether the operation succeeds. For a folder-specific problem, use GOG’s instructions for changing installation and download locations. If GALAXY reports an error, use the displayed code to distinguish a disk-access problem from insufficient space rather than guessing from the fact that the installation stopped.
Folder settings can also help you frame a troubleshooting question accurately. Note whether the affected operation is installing the game, applying an update, or downloading an offline installer or bonus item. Those operations use different folder categories in the settings, and a useful description of the problem should identify both the operation and its selected destination.
Choose between GALAXY and offline installers
GOG supports two installation paths described here: installing through GALAXY, or downloading standalone offline backup installer files from your GOG account/library and running their setup application. The choice is mainly whether you want an in-client installation route or want to work with the standalone files provided for the title. GOG lists Galaxy downloads and browser downloads as separate methods.

The offline route is not a required step for GALAXY users. GOG’s support instructions describe it as an alternative, but do not establish that every game has identical files or behaves identically after installation. Follow the instructions and files provided for the specific title. The route also changes how you begin: use the browser and account/library to download the offline files, then run the setup application from the folder where those files were downloaded. After that installation, the documented launch route is to open the game’s directory and run its executable.
With GALAXY, by contrast, select the owned game in the client and use Install; after completion, select the title and use Play. Browser downloads provide standalone installers, while GALAXY provides an in-client route. The supported comparison is about those methods and the steps involved, not a promise that one approach works for every circumstance or that all titles have the same offline files.

Neither route requires treating the other as a preliminary step: offline installers are not necessary before installing through GALAXY, and GALAXY is described as optional. Use the path that matches how you want to download and install the particular game, and follow the instructions associated with that title.
Troubleshoot downloads, installations, and launch failures
Start with the operation that failed and any error code shown. GOG’s error-code index separates different failure types; a failed installation is not automatically evidence of corrupted game files. Before choosing a support article, note whether GALAXY could not download the game, could not access the destination, reported insufficient space, showed a connection error, or completed installation but failed to launch the game.
Use the code as a classification aid, not as a reason to apply a remedy intended for a different error. A download will not complete
GOG lists GALAXY and browser downloads as separate methods and advises trying the other method if one fails. If GALAXY’s download is the one failing, try the browser route; if a browser download is failing, try GALAXY where appropriate. This changes the download method, but it does not establish that every download problem has the same cause or that the alternative is guaranteed to succeed.
Keep the distinction between downloading and installing clear. Download troubleshooting concerns obtaining the game files. The client reports corrupted local files (E1)
GOG identifies E1 as a corrupted local game copy. This is a specific error category, rather than a generic label for every failed download, installation, or launch. Use GOG’s corrupt-files installation guidance when E1 is the code reported. If the client shows a different code, follow the article for that code instead of assuming the corrupt-files instructions apply.
The client cannot connect to GOG.com servers (E3)
GOG labels E3 as a failure to connect to GOG.com servers. That is distinct from E1, which concerns a corrupted local game copy, and from disk-related errors. Check the displayed code against the GALAXY error-code index and use the relevant connection guidance there. Do not treat a server-connectivity code as proof that the local installation files are corrupt.

The installation reports a disk-access error (E4) or insufficient space (E8)
These codes indicate different problems: E4 is a disk-access error, while E8 indicates insufficient free disk space. Check the error shown and the destination selected under Settings → Installing, updating. For E8, check the available space on that destination; for E4, use GOG’s guidance for the reported disk-access error. The error-code index is the reference for distinguishing them.
Because the settings include separate folders for games and temporary update files, make sure you are checking the location relevant to the operation that failed. An installation, an update, and a browser download may not be using the same folder field. The code itself remains important: lack of free space and inability to access a disk are separate error classes, so do not substitute one assumption for the other.

A game will not launch or crashes
A launch failure occurs after a different step from a failed download or installation. If installation has finished, select the game and use Play; if the game then fails to open or crashes, consult the launch guidance rather than repeating the download steps by default. GOG’s troubleshooting material includes Verify / Repair for some crashes and separate articles for launch issues.
