Install ProFTPD from your Linux distribution’s package when possible, then configure its single main file, proftpd.conf, with a valid service user, group, server mode, listening port and passive-port range. Validate every change with proftpd -t -c /path/to/proftpd.conf before restarting. For encrypted FTP, load mod_tls, provide a certificate and private key, and set a TLS policy. If you need SSH-based SFTP, configure mod_sftp separately; FTPS and SFTP are different protocols.

Plan the VPS before installing ProFTPD
A reliable deployment starts with decisions outside the daemon itself. Record the VPS distribution and release, its public DNS name, the control port you will expose, the passive data-port range, and the firewall rules that will permit those ports. Decide whether the service is for one site or several, whether users are local system accounts or virtual users, and whether clients must use encrypted FTP.

- Distribution: package names, service units and default configuration paths differ between Debian-based, Fedora-based and other systems.
- DNS: use a stable hostname for the service and for certificate issuance. Clients should connect to the name covered by the certificate rather than an unrelated address.
- Firewall: allow the control port and every passive port you configure. Opening only the control port produces successful logins followed by stalled listings or transfers.
- Accounts: create dedicated, least-privilege transfer accounts and bounded home directories. Do not grant shell or filesystem access broader than the transfer task requires.
- Encryption: choose whether credentials alone must be protected or whether both credentials and file data must use TLS.
Choose a package installation or source build
Distribution package: the normal choice
Use the distribution package for routine VPS administration. It integrates with the system’s package updates, service manager, log locations and dependency handling. Package names and repository availability are distribution-specific, so confirm the package offered by your release before installing it. On a Debian- or Ubuntu-family host this is commonly a package named proftpd-basic; Fedora-family systems commonly use a package named proftpd. Treat those names as examples, not universal requirements.
After installation, locate the package’s main configuration file and service unit. Typical locations include /etc/proftpd/proftpd.conf or /etc/proftpd.conf, but the installed package is authoritative. Find the path with your package documentation, service status output or a filesystem search, then use that exact path in every validation command.

Source build: when a package is insufficient
Compile ProFTPD when the distribution does not provide a required version or module, or when you need build-time options unavailable in the package. The official build sequence is:
./configuremakesudo make install
Run ./configure --help in the source tree to review module and installation-prefix options before choosing them. A source installation makes you responsible for tracking upgrades, preserving the configuration, integrating a systemd or other service unit, and ensuring that dynamically loaded modules remain compatible after updates. Keep a record of the source version and configure options so the installation can be rebuilt consistently.
Install the daemon and identify its service details
Use your distribution’s package manager or your completed source installation, then identify the executable, configuration path and service name. The executable is normally called proftpd. Check the installed version and the service status before editing:
proftpd -v
sudo systemctl status proftpdSome packages name the unit proftpd; others may provide a differently named unit or a socket/service arrangement. Use the unit supplied by your operating system rather than assuming the name. If the service is disabled, enable it only after a valid configuration has been tested:
sudo systemctl enable proftpdDo not expose a newly installed daemon until its account, directory, firewall and TLS decisions are complete. A default configuration may listen successfully while still permitting an access policy you did not intend.
Build a safe baseline in proftpd.conf
ProFTPD uses one main configuration file, conventionally named proftpd.conf. Directives can include other files and can be scoped globally, inside a <VirtualHost>, or within other contexts. Context rules matter: a directive valid globally may be invalid inside a virtual host, and vice versa. Use the directive reference for the exact context and module required by each setting.

</Global>Adjust the user and group names to accounts that actually exist on your VPS. The configured User and Group are mandatory runtime identities; if either is missing, ProFTPD will not start. Some distributions use a service user such as proftpd with a group such as nogroup, while others provide different names.
Server mode and port
ServerType standalone tells ProFTPD to listen as its own daemon, which is the normal VPS arrangement. A distribution may supply a service-managed equivalent; preserve that packaging convention if it intentionally differs. The standard FTP control port is 21. Choose another port only when you have a clear operational reason, and update clients and firewall rules together.
Passive ports
FTP uses a control connection plus separate data connections. Set a bounded PassivePorts range rather than leaving the data-port allocation unrestricted. Permit the same range through the VPS firewall and, if applicable, any cloud security group. The range does not need thousands of ports for a small service, but it must be large enough for the number of simultaneous transfers you expect.
Service and transfer accounts
Create a dedicated daemon account for User/Group and separate transfer accounts for people or applications. Give each transfer account a home directory owned by the appropriate account and group. Avoid using root, and avoid anonymous access unless the use case explicitly requires public downloads or uploads. Restrict account shells and authentication according to your distribution’s policy; a non-interactive shell can prevent an FTP-only account from becoming an SSH login.
Set homes, permissions and isolation
FTP access is governed by both ProFTPD directives and ordinary Unix ownership and mode bits. A user who can authenticate but cannot list a directory usually has a filesystem permission problem, not a network problem. Check the entire path from the filesystem root to the target directory.
Bound a session to its home
For a chroot-style layout, use an appropriate DefaultRoot policy after confirming the account and directory design. Chroot changes what the FTP session can see; it does not replace Unix permissions, and it does not automatically make every file inside the tree safe to modify. Test uploads, downloads, renames and directory traversal with a non-administrator account.

Use predictable ownership
- Own a user’s private upload area by that user, with only the required group access.
- Use a shared group for collaborative directories instead of making them world-writable.
- Keep the chroot root itself from being writable when the selected security model requires that layout.
- Grant write permission only to directories that genuinely receive uploads.
Virtual users are another option when you do not want one Unix account per FTP identity. ProFTPD supports virtual-user authentication through modules and directives, with credentials stored in an appropriate backend. The backend, password format and directive context depend on the module you choose, so configure those pieces together rather than copying a directive from an unrelated authentication method.
Validate the configuration before touching the live service
Run the syntax and module check
After every edit, run:
sudo proftpd -t -c /path/to/proftpd.confA successful test means ProFTPD can parse the selected file and load the directives and modules it can find. It does not prove that a remote client can authenticate, that a certificate matches its key, or that passive ports are reachable. Treat those as separate checks.

Interpret common validation failures
- Unknown directive: the directive may belong to a module that is not loaded, or it may be misspelled.
- Missing module: install or build the module, then confirm the configuration’s module-loading path.
- Invalid context: move the directive to the global or virtual-host context allowed by its documentation.
- File or path error: verify that certificate, key, include and authentication database paths exist and are readable by the daemon at startup.
- User or group error: create the referenced account or change the directive to an existing least-privilege identity.
Use a second daemon for a non-disruptive rollout
For a high-availability or production VPS, copy the configuration to a temporary path, change its Port to an unused unprivileged port such as 2121, and start a separate foreground test instance:
sudo cp /path/to/proftpd.conf /tmp/proftpd-test.conf
sudoedit /tmp/proftpd-test.conf
sudo proftpd -n -c /tmp/proftpd-test.confThe temporary file must reference valid include files, users, groups, certificates and module paths. Connect to the temporary port and test login, directory listing, upload, download, rename and deletion according to the account’s intended permissions. Stop the foreground process, correct any failures, and restore the production configuration’s original port only after those checks pass. Never run two daemons against the same port.
Enable FTPS with mod_tls
FTPS is FTP protected by SSL/TLS. ProFTPD implements it with the mod_tls module. The module must be built or loaded before its directives can be used.
Protect certificate and key files
Obtain a certificate whose name matches the hostname clients will use. Store the certificate and private key in protected locations, restrict the key’s permissions, and ensure the daemon can read it at startup without making it readable by ordinary transfer users.

Configure the TLS engine
A representative configuration is:

</IfModule>Directive names can vary with the installed ProFTPD and OpenSSL combination, so confirm the applicable certificate directives in the module documentation. The certificate and private key must form a matching pair. Keep the TLS protocol policy current for the OpenSSL version installed on the VPS; do not enable obsolete protocols merely to accommodate an unmaintained client.
Choose what TLS must cover

After enabling TLS, test the exact client modes you intend to support, such as explicit FTP over TLS. A negotiation failure commonly comes from an unreadable key, a certificate/key mismatch, an unloaded mod_tls, an incompatible protocol policy, or a client configured for a different FTP security mode.
Configure virtual hosts and site-specific policies
Use <VirtualHost> blocks when separate addresses, ports or service policies must coexist. A virtual host can define its own server name, authentication behavior, directory restrictions, TLS policy and module directives within the contexts permitted by ProFTPD.

</VirtualHost>Replace the example address and paths with values assigned to your VPS. Keep each site’s home and authentication scope explicit. A virtual host is not a security boundary by itself: Unix permissions, chroot policy, module configuration and firewall rules still determine what a logged-in user can reach.
Understand why SFTP is not FTPS
SFTP is the SSH File Transfer Protocol. It uses SSH authentication and transport semantics, not FTP commands wrapped in TLS. ProFTPD provides SFTP through the separate mod_sftp feature and a separate virtual-host configuration, commonly associated with the SSH port 22.
Do not point an SFTP client at an FTPS listener or label mod_tls settings as SFTP settings. If SSH-based clients are required, load and configure mod_sftp in its own <VirtualHost>, select the SSH-facing port and host keys required by that module, and test it independently from the FTP service. Firewall rules, authentication methods and logs for the two protocols must be checked separately.
Start, enable and test the production service
- Run
sudo proftpd -t -c /path/to/proftpd.confagainst the production file. - Confirm that
User,Group, certificate files, key files, include files and authentication databases exist with correct permissions. - Confirm that the control port and passive-port range are allowed by the VPS firewall and any provider security group.
- Restart the service with the unit supplied by your distribution, for example
sudo systemctl restart proftpd. - Immediately inspect
sudo systemctl status proftpdand the system or ProFTPD logs for startup errors. - From an external client, test the intended protocol, hostname, port, login, listing, upload and download. For FTPS, verify the certificate name and encryption state; for SFTP, use the SSH endpoint instead.
If the service fails after a restart, stop retrying blindly. Restore the last known-good configuration, run the configuration test against the edited file, and compare the service log with the directive or module that changed.
Troubleshoot the failures that appear most often
The daemon will not start
Run the test command with the exact configuration path used by the service. Syntax errors, invalid directive contexts, missing modules, nonexistent users or groups, and unreadable include files are the usual causes. A source build may also be loading modules from a different prefix than the package-managed service expects.
Authentication fails
Check that the account exists in the configured authentication backend, that its password or key is valid, and that the selected authentication module is loaded. For local accounts, verify the account’s shell policy, home-directory ownership and parent-directory traversal permissions. A chroot or virtual-user rule can deny a login even when the credentials are correct.
Login works but listing or transfers hang
Inspect the passive-port range first. The client must be able to reach the server’s advertised address and every selected passive port through the VPS firewall, provider security group and any intervening NAT. A control connection on port 21 does not prove that data connections are possible.
FTPS negotiation fails
Confirm that mod_tls is loaded, TLSEngine is enabled, the certificate and private key paths are correct, and the key matches the certificate. Check file permissions, the hostname presented by the client, and protocol compatibility between the client’s TLS support and the OpenSSL policy on the VPS. Finally, verify that TLSRequired ctrl or TLSRequired on matches the client mode you selected.

An SFTP client cannot authenticate to an ordinary FTPS listener. Connect it to the SSH-based mod_sftp virtual host and its configured SSH port, or use an FTP-over-TLS client for the mod_tls service.

- Back up
