To install an RTX 5070, first confirm that the exact card fits your case and that your power supply meets its requirements; then remove the old card, seat the new one, connect its specified power cables, and install a current NVIDIA driver. RTX 5070 models from different manufacturers can vary in size and connectors, so use the specifications and instructions for the card you actually own.
Before you open the PC: check fit, power and compatibility
Confirm the exact card’s dimensions
NVIDIA’s reference RTX 5070 Founders Edition measures 242 mm long and 112 mm wide and occupies two slots. Those dimensions are not a fit guarantee for other RTX 5070 cards: NVIDIA says add-in-card specifications vary. Check the manufacturer’s measurements for your card against your case’s available GPU length, width, and slot clearance. Also make sure the case has room for the card’s cooling shroud and power connector and cable.

Compare the exact card’s published dimensions with your case manual or manufacturer’s specifications. Check the space from the rear expansion slots to any obstruction in front of the card, and account for any adjacent card or other component that could interfere. NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 family specifications identify reference specifications and warn that add-in-card models can differ.

NVIDIA lists 250 W total graphics power and 650 W required system power for the RTX 5070 reference specifications. The 650 W figure is minimum guidance based on a system configured with a Ryzen 9 9950X, not a guarantee that every PC with a 650 W supply will be suitable. Actual requirements vary with the rest of the system and with the specific graphics card.

Look up your power supply’s model, rated output, and available PCIe power cables. Then compare them with the exact graphics card’s official requirements and included instructions. The reference specification lists two PCIe 8-pin cables used with the included adapter, or a 300 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable. NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 User Guide gives a 650 W minimum system-power rating and describes supported configurations using the RTX 5070 PCIe Gen 5 adapter with two PCIe 8-pin cables, or one 360 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable. These details are not interchangeable instructions for every partner card: follow the guide supplied with your exact model.
If you use the adapter, NVIDIA’s guide illustrates connecting its 16-pin plug to the card and using at least two independent, dedicated 8-pin PCIe cables from the power supply to the adapter. Do not assume that one cable with two plugs satisfies that instruction. Do not use a CPU/EPS cable in place of a PCIe cable, and do not force a connector. If your supply lacks the required cables or does not meet the card maker’s guidance for your complete system, resolve that before installation rather than improvising.
Gather the card and your PC’s instructions
Keep the RTX 5070’s included adapter and documentation nearby. Case and motherboard layouts differ, including the position and release mechanism of the PCIe slot latch, so consult their manuals if you are unsure how the existing card is retained. Check whether the replacement card requires more case slots or clearance than the old one.
How to replace your old graphics card with an RTX 5070
- Shut down and disconnect power. Turn off the PC, switch off the power supply if it has a switch, and unplug the power cable. Disconnect the display cable and any other external cables that would prevent safe access. Follow the PC and case manufacturer’s handling instructions.
- Open the case and locate the old graphics card. Remove the side panel as directed by the case manual. Identify the card’s power leads, the screws or retention hardware securing it to the case, and the PCIe slot it occupies.
- Disconnect the old card’s power leads. Release each connector using its latch and pull on the connector, not the wires. If a plug resists, check its locking tab rather than forcing it.
- Remove the card’s case retention hardware. Support the card while you remove the screws or other fasteners holding its bracket to the case. Keep the hardware for the replacement if it is compatible.
- Release the PCIe slot latch and remove the old card. Find the latch at the end of the motherboard’s PCIe slot and release it according to the motherboard’s instructions. Support the card and lift it straight out without twisting or levering against the slot. If access is obstructed, stop and check the motherboard or case manual for the correct release method.
- Prepare the expansion-slot opening. Remove or reposition the case’s slot covers as needed for the RTX 5070’s bracket and thickness. Check the card’s instructions and case layout before removing covers.
- Seat the RTX 5070 fully. Align the card’s connector with the motherboard’s PCIe slot and its bracket with the case opening. Press evenly until the card is fully seated and the slot latch engages. Secure the bracket to the case so the card is supported; do not use the screws to pull a misaligned card into place.
- Connect the card’s specified power cable or adapter. Use only the cable arrangement specified for the exact model. Seat the connector fully and route the cable without sharp bends or pressure against the case panel. Secure the cable so it cannot pull on the connector.
- Close the case and reconnect the display. Before replacing the side panel, check that no cable is trapped and the card is secure. Connect the monitor to a display output on the RTX 5070, not the motherboard’s video output, then reconnect power and other external cables.
First boot and NVIDIA driver installation
Turn the PC on and confirm that the system starts and the display shows an image. If it does not, turn the PC off and disconnect power before checking that the card is seated, its power connector is fully engaged, and the display cable is connected to the graphics card. Recheck the exact model’s installation instructions if the problem persists.
After adding an RTX 5070, install a current NVIDIA driver. NVIDIA says the latest GeForce Game Ready Driver is required for users adding the card and directs users to download drivers through the NVIDIA app or GeForce.com. Choose the Game Ready Driver for gaming-focused use, or consult NVIDIA’s current guidance on the latest Studio Driver if your work centers on creative applications. Restart if the installer requests it.
When you may need a different power supply
A PSU upgrade is not automatically required just because you are installing an RTX 5070. Decide based on the exact card’s power and connector instructions, the PSU’s rated output and available cables, and the needs of the complete PC. NVIDIA’s reference 650 W guidance is useful context, but it is not a universal pass/fail threshold for every system or partner card. If those details do not match, consult the graphics-card and PSU manufacturers before powering on.
What to compare if you have not chosen a model
RTX 5070 partner cards can differ from NVIDIA’s reference dimensions and connector arrangements. Compare the manufacturer’s published specifications and included instructions for each candidate rather than assuming one model’s fit or cabling applies to another.
Quick Recap
- Physical fit: card length, width, slot thickness, and required space for the power cable.
- Power: the stated system-power guidance for the model and the connector configuration it requires.
- Included accessories: whether an adapter is supplied and which cables its instructions require.
- Cooling and support: case clearance around the card’s cooler and the manufacturer’s documentation and support.
