You can upgrade a handheld gaming PC’s SSD, but the correct drive and opening procedure depend on the exact model and revision. Before buying a drive or removing the case, confirm its M.2 length and supported interface, decide how you will preserve or restore your data, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for battery disconnection and reassembly.
Check your handheld’s exact SSD requirements first
M.2 describes a family of drive formats, not a guarantee that every M.2 SSD will physically fit or work. Check the product label or system information for the precise model and revision, then consult its manufacturer’s service or support documentation. Confirm the drive length, interface, capacity limits if stated, and physical clearance before ordering.

| Device example | Documented SSD fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS ROG Ally (2023) | M.2 2230 | ASUS’s June 2023 first-edition service manual says the slot does not support M.2 SATA SSDs. This example does not establish compatibility for Ally X or later models. ASUS support |
| Lenovo Legion Go (8.8-inch, Gen 2) | One M.2 slot; 2242 or 2280, PCIe Gen 4 | Lenovo’s guide is specific to Gen 2; do not assume the same fit for the original Legion Go, Go S, or another generation. Lenovo support |
| Steam Deck or another handheld | Not established here | Use the official instructions for the exact model rather than inferring a size or screw sequence from another handheld. SteamOS Installation and Repair covers SteamOS recovery, not a universal physical replacement procedure. |
When comparing compatible drives, prioritize documented length and interface, then capacity and local price. Check single- or double-sided construction if the manufacturer documents clearance. A higher-rated drive speed is not evidence by itself that games will run faster in a particular handheld.

Choose how you will keep or restore your data
Decide before opening the case whether you will clone the old SSD or install the operating system again. Back up important files either way. Cloning requires a readable source drive and a setup that can connect to both the old and replacement drives; if using a USB enclosure, verify that it supports NVMe and the drive’s physical length.

If you plan a fresh installation or recovery, obtain the official operating-system or device recovery instructions in advance and prepare the required media and another computer if the process calls for them. Steam’s SteamOS Installation and Repair page is the official reference for SteamOS recovery. Windows handhelds and other systems may use different recovery steps.
Prepare safely before opening the handheld
- Fully shut down the device; unplug the charger and peripherals. Remove external cards if the model’s instructions say to do so.
- Work on a clean, stable surface and use a suitable precision driver. Check the model’s guide for the correct bit rather than assuming a generic kit will fit.
- Read the manufacturer’s opening and battery-disconnection instructions all the way through. Do not pry against the screen, cables, or battery cells.
- Keep the original SSD’s retention screw, bracket, foil sleeve, and thermal material. Their presence and placement vary by model; reinstall them as the device’s instructions specify.
For the ROG Ally (2023), ASUS’s June 2023 service manual instructs that external power and the battery pack be disconnected before removing the bottom cover. ASUS says, “It is recommended that you install the M.2 SSD module under professional supervision,” and points users to an authorized service center for assistance. Use the guide for your precise model, and stop if the battery connector or cover is unfamiliar or resists removal.

Replace the SSD using the model’s service instructions
- Open the case as directed. Follow the exact cover-removal sequence in the manufacturer’s guide; screw locations and clips are not universal.
- Disconnect power internally as instructed. Follow the model-specific battery procedure before touching the SSD or its connector.
- Remove the original drive carefully. Remove its retaining fastener, then slide the module from its socket at the angle specified by the guide. Preserve any sleeve, bracket, or thermal material.
- Fit the replacement without force. Confirm its length and interface against the device documentation. Insert it into the socket as directed, secure it with the correct fastener, and restore protective material in its original position.
- Reassemble and restore the system. Reconnect the battery and close the case in the prescribed order, then use your chosen cloning or official recovery process.
This is a general outline, not a substitute for a model-specific repair guide. If a step differs from the manufacturer’s instructions, follow the manufacturer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBoot the handheld and check the result
After restoration, verify that the handheld starts successfully and recognizes the replacement drive’s capacity. Complete any required operating-system setup and updates. If it does not boot or recognize the drive, stop repeated power cycling and consult the manufacturer’s recovery guidance or service support rather than continuing to reopen the device without a clear diagnosis.
