To flash an Android 16 custom ROM on the Nothing Phone (2), first confirm the build is specifically for the device’s codename, Pong, then follow that ROM maintainer’s current instructions from start to finish. There is no universal flash sequence: ROMs can differ in required firmware, recovery, partitions, sideload method, and data-formatting steps. Unlocking and installing a ROM erase personal data, so make and verify a complete backup before you begin.

Which Android 16 ROMs are available for the Nothing Phone (2)?

A CustomDroid catalogue snapshot dated September 16, 2026, listed 12 tracked ROMs for the Nothing Phone (2), with 8 marked current. The entries spanned Android 14, 15, and 16; the catalogue included a LineageOS Android 16 v23.2 build. These are dated catalogue counts, not a guarantee that every project remains maintained or that a listed build is stable or suitable for your needs.

Before choosing, check the project’s own release page for a build explicitly marked for Pong. Compare its required starting firmware, installation method, recovery files, whether Google Apps are bundled or optional, known hardware limitations, recent update activity, and rollback instructions. A catalogue entry alone does not establish feature completeness, banking-app compatibility, or Play Integrity status.

What to check before flashing

  • Exact device and build: Confirm that the instructions and every image or package are for Nothing Phone (2), codename Pong—not another Nothing phone or a generic device build.
  • Current maintainer instructions: Read the release notes and installation guide for the exact build you intend to install. Check any firmware baseline, recovery, partition-image, add-on, and rollback requirements before changing the phone.
  • Backup: Save photos, files, messages, authenticator recovery information, and anything else you need somewhere separate from the phone. Verify that the backup can be accessed. The device-specific guide warns that flashing wipes data.
  • Computer tools and connection: If the chosen procedure uses ADB or Fastboot, install Google’s official Android SDK Platform Tools. Use a data-capable USB cable and a computer connection that remains stable during the process.
  • Time and recovery plan: Have the selected ROM’s recovery instructions available offline, and do not proceed unless you understand how its maintainer says to recover or return to stock.

Why there is no one-size-fits-all flashing command

The Nothing Phone (2) guide published by DroidWin on August 26, 2026, illustrates that different ROMs can require materially different procedures. Some use a recovery and adb sideload; others install a ZIP in recovery, use fastboot update, flash individual partition images, or require a super-partition wipe. Data may need to be formatted at different points in some procedures. These methods are not interchangeable.

Do not copy a command or step from one ROM’s instructions into another ROM’s procedure. A seemingly small difference in firmware, partition layout, recovery, or formatting order can make a generic recipe inappropriate for the build you selected. The device guide is useful for seeing that variation, but the selected project’s current release documentation should determine the actual steps.

High-level installation sequence

This is an orientation, not a complete flash recipe. Use it to understand the stages, then follow only the exact sequence documented for your chosen Pong build.

  1. Back up and verify your data. Treat bootloader unlocking and ROM installation as data-erasing operations.
  2. Identify the exact release and prerequisites. Confirm the Pong build, required starting firmware, recovery or image files, add-ons, and recovery path in the maintainer’s current documentation.
  3. Prepare the phone and computer. Enable the developer options the procedure requires, including USB debugging and OEM unlocking if specified. Install Platform Tools if the instructions use ADB or Fastboot, and establish a stable data connection.
  4. Unlock the bootloader only as instructed. Android’s documentation describes fastboot flashing unlock as a supported-device mechanism for enabling reflashing; it also explains that OEM unlocking enables the ability to unlock where supported. These general details do not confirm the correct procedure for every Phone (2) build, so use the device and ROM instructions for the actual steps.
  5. Install or boot the required recovery or images. Use only the files and partition steps specified for that release. Some ROM procedures do not use the same recovery or image set as others.
  6. Flash the ROM by its documented method. That may involve recovery, sideloading, Fastboot, or another specified process. Do not substitute a method or reorder steps based on a guide for a different ROM.
  7. Format data only where and when required. Follow the maintainer’s exact instructions; formatting is destructive, and one ROM’s timing or requirement does not establish another’s.
  8. Reboot and validate the installation. Use the release guide’s first-boot and recovery advice, then test the functions you rely on.

Bootloader unlocking and data loss

The Android Open Source Project documentation says, “By default, most Android devices ship with a locked bootloader, meaning that users can’t flash the bootloader or device partitions.” On supported devices, unlocking permits reflashing, but it also has consequences for the data on the phone. The Phone (2) guide directs users to make a complete backup and warns that ROM flashing wipes data.

Enable OEM unlocking only where the device supports it and the selected maintainer’s instructions call for it. Android’s general bootloader documentation explains the mechanism, but it is not a Phone (2)-specific installation guide. Do not assume that unlocking, relocking, or recovery steps documented for a different build are safe to apply to yours.

Device-specific ROMs are not the same as Android 16 GSIs

A ROM built specifically for Pong and an Android Generic System Image (GSI) are different installation targets. Android describes its Android 16 GSI binaries as experimental and warns that they may erase data or make parts of a device unusable. Its stated GSI prerequisites include an unlocked bootloader and a Treble-compliant device originally launched with Android 9 or later.

Those cautions describe Android’s generic system images; they should not be applied as a blanket description of every device-specific ROM. Conversely, the fact that a GSI has general requirements does not show that a particular image is suitable for the Phone (2). Confirm the target and instructions for the exact image before attempting installation.

What to verify after the first boot

A successful boot does not by itself confirm that every feature works. Check the functions that matter to you, and consult the chosen ROM’s own known-issues and update documentation for build-specific status.

  • Make and receive calls, and test cellular data.
  • Connect to Wi-Fi and test the camera and other hardware you rely on.
  • Check whether encryption and updates behave as documented for that build.
  • If needed, confirm how Google services are installed or supported by that project.

The available catalogue and general installation guide do not establish the status of these features for every Android 16 ROM or release. Do not infer compatibility from the Android version or from another device’s experience.

If the process does not match the instructions

Stop rather than improvising if a file name, firmware version, recovery screen, partition step, or command does not match the maintainer’s guide. Recheck that the instructions are for Pong and the same release, and consult that project’s current recovery guidance before trying another flash or changing partitions. The sources available here do not establish a universal recovery procedure for all ROMs, so a fix for one build should not be treated as a fix for another.

Nothing Community’s Phone (2) development thread links kernel source and community development resources. That supports the community-led nature of development, but it does not replace a ROM maintainer’s release-specific install and recovery instructions.
