You can install a laptop wireless card only if the exact laptop model supports a replaceable card and the replacement is electrically compatible. Before buying or opening the computer, identify its current adapter, check the manufacturer’s service guide for the approved part and procedure, and rule out a driver or settings problem. There is no universal laptop disassembly sequence.
First, confirm that a hardware replacement is needed
Identify the laptop and its current adapter
Record the laptop’s full model or product number, not just its brand or product family. In Windows, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and note the wireless adapter’s name. This gives you a starting point for checking the installed hardware and finding relevant driver information.

Check Windows before opening the chassis
A wireless adapter that is disabled or affected by a driver problem can appear to be a failed card. In Device Manager, check whether the adapter is listed and enabled, and review its status. Use Windows network troubleshooting and install an appropriate driver from the laptop manufacturer or card manufacturer if needed. Microsoft’s guidance covers checking the adapter in Device Manager, enabling it, and addressing drivers: fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows.

If the adapter works after a settings or driver correction, there is no reason to open the laptop for a card replacement. If it is still missing or malfunctioning, continue with the laptop maker’s documentation rather than assuming the card is removable.

Find the exact laptop’s service guide
Search the manufacturer’s support site using the exact model or product number and locate its service or repair guide. Confirm that the wireless card is a replaceable part and identify the approved replacement part number. Also note the guide’s required tools, battery and power-isolation instructions, chassis-opening procedure, fasteners, and antenna-lead arrangement.
These details differ between laptop models. Some computers may not have a user-replaceable wireless card, and a familiar-looking card or access panel does not prove that a particular part is supported. Microsoft’s self-repair information applies to selected Surface models and directs owners to review the model-specific service guide before purchasing parts or starting work: Surface self-repair information.

Check compatibility before buying a card
Match the replacement against the laptop’s approved part and technical requirements. Physical fit is only one check: an M.2 card that fits a socket may still be incompatible with the system.
- OEM approval and platform support: Start with the part number in the service guide. If the guide does not establish that an alternative is supported, ask the laptop manufacturer before ordering. Motherboard design, BIOS, M.2 port wiring, and system requirements can determine whether a card works.
- Form factor and socket: Confirm the card dimensions and socket/key against the service documentation. Do not infer compatibility from a card’s length or the fact that it can be inserted.
- Electrical interface: Establish whether the system expects a standard PCIe wireless card or a CNVi-compatible companion RF module. These are not interchangeable merely because they share an M.2-style connector.
- Antenna connections: Match the connector type and number of antenna leads to the original equipment and service guide. Do not force a connector or leave leads attached to the wrong terminals.
- Drivers and features: Check that an appropriate driver is available for the laptop’s operating system. Wi-Fi generation, bands, Bluetooth, and features such as 6 GHz matter only when the laptop design, drivers, regulatory region, and router or network support them.
Why an M.2 card can fit and still fail
Intel’s AX210 is a useful example of why the checks matter, not a universal upgrade recommendation. Intel’s AX210 IOT kit documentation specifies a wireless M.2 2230 Key E connector and says it cannot be installed in Key M or Key B sockets: Intel AX210 IOT kit compatibility information. Intel’s product brief describes M.2 2230 modules using a standard Key A or Key E socket: Intel Wi-Fi 6E product brief.

Socket fit still does not settle platform compatibility. Intel says AX210 depends on the computer’s design, motherboard, BIOS, M.2 port, and regulatory requirements: Intel AX210 compatibility guidance. CNVi companion RF modules are a separate case: Intel explains that they work only in systems designed for CNVi, even if the module can be inserted into a standard M.2 Key E socket: Intel explanation of CNVi and CRF modules.
Intel’s AX210 product brief lists Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 for the AX210D2W variant. Those specifications describe that product; they do not establish compatibility or guarantee performance in a particular laptop.

Install the card using the laptop’s procedure
Once you have verified that the card is approved and compatible, follow the service guide for the exact laptop. Do not substitute a generic video or instructions for a different chassis: the battery procedure, access route, fasteners, card retention, and antenna layout can vary.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Prepare the work area. Gather only the tools listed or suited to the service guide’s requirements. Shut down the laptop and disconnect external power and accessories as directed by the manufacturer.
- Isolate power as instructed. Follow the guide’s exact battery-disconnection or power-isolation procedure. Do not assume every model uses the same battery connector or sequence.
- Open the chassis. Use the specified fasteners and opening method, keeping track of screw locations if the guide calls for different fasteners. Avoid prying beyond the guide’s directions.
- Locate and document the card and antenna leads. Before disconnecting anything, note which antenna lead is attached to each terminal and how the cables are routed. Use the service guide’s instructions for handling these small RF connectors.
- Remove the old card and install the replacement. Release the card’s retention fastener, withdraw it as the guide specifies, insert the approved replacement fully into its socket, and secure it using the prescribed method.
- Reconnect the antennas and reassemble. Attach the correct leads to their matching terminals and restore cable routing, covers, and fasteners according to the guide. Reconnect the battery or restore power only at the stage specified by the manufacturer.
Antenna integration and connector handling are model-specific. Intel describes the small RF connector standard used on its M.2 adapters and directs users to the equipment manufacturer for antenna integration, replacement, and regulatory guidance: Intel wireless adapter antenna information.

Install drivers and verify operation
After reassembly, start Windows and check Device Manager > Network adapters for the new adapter. If Windows does not install a suitable driver, use the laptop maker’s or card maker’s driver for the exact hardware and operating system. Then confirm that Wi-Fi can be enabled and that the laptop can connect to a network.
Quick Recap
If the adapter is not detected or cannot connect
- Check Device Manager for whether the adapter is listed, disabled, or reporting a problem, then address the driver or enablement issue.
- If detection remains absent, shut down and follow the service guide before checking that the card is seated and secured correctly.
- If the adapter appears but wireless performance or connectivity is poor, verify that both antenna leads are attached to the correct terminals and routed as documented.
- If the card is seated and connected but still does not work, recheck the exact OEM-approved part and platform compatibility with the laptop manufacturer. Do not assume the card itself is defective until compatibility and driver support have been confirmed.
