Install a window air conditioner according to the instructions for its exact model: window sizes, fastening hardware, electrical needs and drainage design differ. Before lifting it, confirm the window fits and is sound; install and secure the unit with help; then seal the sash and side gaps with suitable weatherstripping without blocking drainage openings.
Before you start: check the window, unit and outlet
Find the model number and read its installation instructions before buying extra hardware or starting work. Measure the opening and compare it with that model’s permitted window dimensions. Also confirm that the window type is supported, the sash and sill are in good condition, and the structure can carry the unit. GE notes that window requirements vary by model, so do not assume a standard double-hung setup applies to casement, sliding, unusually deep or damaged windows. See GE’s window AC installation guidance.

- Check that the required grounded outlet is within reach of the power cord. If the outlet or circuit seems unsuitable, or you are uncertain, ask a qualified electrician rather than altering the plug or wiring.
- Check whether the installation requires a support bracket or other hardware, and whether that hardware is compatible with both the AC and the window. Building rules, rental agreements and local requirements may also apply.
- If the window is high, damaged, or cannot be worked on while keeping the AC supported and yourself safely inside, use a qualified installer.
Prepare the unit and its hardware on the floor
Assemble the top rail, side curtains, seals and fasteners as directed, before lifting the AC if the manual calls for it. Keep every supplied brace and structural part in place. A U.S. Department of Energy Building America fact sheet from June 2013 cautions against removing top and bottom braces that hold a unit in the window; the model’s current manual takes precedence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not make an ill-fitting unit work by removing structural pieces or substituting improvised screws. If the unit does not fit the opening as specified, stop and resolve the mismatch before lifting it.

Lift, position and fasten the AC
Window AC units are heavy and can fall outward if poorly supported. Whirlpool’s cited installation instructions call for two or more people to move and install the unit. Follow the number of helpers and lifting method in your model’s instructions; do not try to hold the appliance in place while reaching outside.
- With a helper supporting the unit, position it in the opening exactly as the manual shows.
- Fit and fasten the supplied brackets and other hardware to the specified surfaces. Use any compatible additional support only when the model instructions and applicable requirements allow it.
- Lower or secure the sash and install the specified sash lock or window-lock bracket. Do not rely on the AC’s weight or a precarious balance to hold it in place.
- Before letting go, confirm the unit is held by its required hardware and does not shift. If you cannot do that safely from inside, stop and get professional help.
See Whirlpool’s installation instructions, GE’s guidance and LG’s installation guidance for examples of manufacturer-specific fastening steps. Hardware and support requirements are not universal.

Follow the model’s drainage and electrical directions
Drainage and level
Do not assume every window AC needs the same tilt. ENERGY STAR advises making sure a room AC is level, while LG’s guidance for the models it discusses specifies a rearward drainage tilt. The right position depends on the unit’s design: follow its manual, since incorrect positioning can cause water to overflow indoors. Keep the drainage route unobstructed. See ENERGY STAR’s room air conditioner guidance and LG’s instructions.

Power connection
Connect the AC only as the manual directs, to a suitable grounded outlet. The cited Whirlpool instructions explicitly warn against using an extension cord. If the cord cannot reach an appropriate outlet, do not add an extension or modify the plug; ask a qualified electrician about a safe solution.

Seal the AC-to-window and sash gaps
Once the unit is secured, extend the side curtains and install the supplied foam or seals where the manual indicates. Close the sash against the unit or top rail as directed, then fit the sash seal where the raised and lower sash meet. Check the sides, sill and window head for uncovered contact gaps. These are separate sealing points: a well-fitted side curtain does not automatically seal the gap between the sashes.
ENERGY STAR’s Version 5.0 room air conditioner specification describes sealing between the AC and window opening, at the sash and sill or window head, and between fixed and movable sashes. It identifies vinyl-clad foam, EPDM cellular rubber, silicone rubber or comparable materials resistant to air and water infiltration and UV degradation. Use the appliance’s included seals when they suit the gaps and follow its placement instructions; added gasket material should be compatible with the unit and window.

ENERGY STAR says an improperly installed room AC can leak as much air as a 6-square-inch hole. That figure appears on its consumer room AC guidance page, which displays no publication year. Keep drainage openings, ventilation and needed access clear while sealing.

Low-expansion window-and-door foam is a different option for applicable gaps behind surrounding trim, not a substitute for removable AC weatherstripping and not a way to glue the unit into the window. See ENERGY STAR’s trim-sealing guidance.
Recheck before operating the unit
- Confirm the brackets, screws, braces and sash lock required by the manual are in place.
- Check that the unit is stable, the side curtains and sash seal cover their gaps, and the drainage route is clear.
- Confirm the electrical connection follows the manual and uses a suitable outlet.
- Do not operate the unit if it moves, water can enter indoors, the window is damaged, or the electrical setup or support remains uncertain. Resolve the problem first.
Reduce leakage when cooling season ends
If it is practical and safe, remove the AC at the end of the cooling season and follow the manual’s removal and storage directions. If it stays installed, use an appropriately sized cover when the manufacturer allows it. ENERGY STAR recommends removal when possible or a properly sized winter cover; see its room AC guidance.
