The reliable way to run WordPress on an Ubuntu VPS with a control panel is to start with a fresh, supported Ubuntu LTS image, verify the panel’s hardware and architecture requirements, install the panel as root using its current official installer, and then create the domain, database, PHP runtime, DNS records, and HTTPS certificate before running WordPress’s installer. Existing web, database, mail, or firewall services can conflict with panel installers, so take a provider snapshot and do not install over a server that is already hosting a hand-built stack.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
What a control panel changes on an Ubuntu VPS
A control panel provides a browser interface for tasks that would otherwise require separate Linux administration: creating websites and virtual hosts, selecting PHP versions, provisioning MariaDB or MySQL databases, issuing TLS certificates, managing files, configuring mail, scheduling backups, and viewing resource usage. The panel does not replace the VPS operating system or WordPress. It orchestrates the web server, PHP process manager, database server, firewall, and related services that WordPress depends on.

For WordPress, the important outcome is not the panel’s appearance but the stack it can configure. WordPress.org’s 2026 requirements recommend PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS. Apache or Nginx is recommended as the most robust and featureful web-server choice. Older PHP and database releases may still appear to work, but they are end-of-life and can leave a site exposed to known vulnerabilities.
A panel installation is consequently a server-provisioning decision. It normally installs several services at once, often including a web server, multiple PHP packages, a database, DNS or mail components, a firewall, and intrusion-prevention tools. That is why a clean image and a planned resource budget matter more than a one-click label.

Choose the panel before you provision the server
These four panels can support different Ubuntu-and-WordPress workflows. Verify the current installer page immediately before installation because operating-system support and bundled components can change.
| Panel | Best fit | Documented characteristics | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| HestiaCP | A conventional Nginx/PHP-FPM hosting workflow on Ubuntu LTS | Requires a fresh operating system; lists Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, and 26.04 LTS; minimum 1 CPU core, 1 GB RAM without SpamAssassin or ClamAV, and 10 GB disk. The installer runs as root and the default panel port is 8083. | It installs a broad stack, including web, PHP, database, mail, and firewall choices. A fuller installation is heavier than the minimum figures suggest. |
| CyberPanel | Administrators who specifically want OpenLiteSpeed and panel-driven WordPress setup | Its getting-started workflow covers website creation, WordPress, SSL certificates, and email on a fresh VPS or cloud server. The installation knowledge base lists 1,024 MB RAM and 10 GB disk as minimums. | OpenLiteSpeed and Enterprise LiteSpeed are different editions with different licensing. Confirm the current Ubuntu support matrix and the edition you intend to run. |
| aaPanel | Users who prioritize a visual operations dashboard | The quick-start workflow covers websites, WordPress, files and databases, HTTPS, monitoring, and backups. Its guidance recommends Ubuntu 22.04 when you are unsure which release to select. | Check the current Ubuntu support list and inspect the exact web server, PHP, and database versions selected by the installer rather than assuming they meet WordPress’s current baseline. |
| ISPConfig | Administrators who need Apache or Nginx controls and multi-server hosting features | Its documentation covers Apache2 and Nginx web-server management and lists Ubuntu 22.04 through 26.04 support. | The workflow is more administration-oriented. Follow the current installation guide for the topology you need instead of treating it as a consumer one-click installer. |
Do not select solely because a panel advertises “one-click WordPress.” Confirm that it exposes PHP 8.3 or later, MariaDB 10.11 or MySQL 8.0 or later, HTTPS certificates, usable backups, and a way to control DNS and firewall rules. If you need mail hosting, check its mail stack and outbound-delivery requirements separately; a WordPress site does not require you to run mail on the same VPS.

Use a supported Ubuntu LTS image
Choose an Ubuntu LTS release explicitly listed by the panel. Hestia’s current requirements list 22.04, 24.04, and 26.04 LTS. ISPConfig documents Ubuntu 22.04–26.04. aaPanel recommends 22.04 when the administrator is uncertain. CyberPanel’s supported release list should be checked on its current installer page because its requirements are version-specific. Do not infer support for an Ubuntu release merely because the panel worked on an older one.
Start with an empty server
Provision a fresh image rather than reusing a VPS that already has Apache, Nginx, PHP, MariaDB, MySQL, Postfix, Docker-published ports, or a manually configured firewall. Hestia explicitly states that it must be installed on a fresh operating-system installation for proper functionality. Panel installers expect to own service configuration and ports; pre-existing packages can cause an installer to abort or produce a partially managed system.
Check architecture, virtualization, and capacity
- Confirm whether the image is x86_64/AMD64 or ARM64 and that the selected panel supports that architecture. A panel that supports Ubuntu on AMD64 may not provide an ARM64 build.
- Check the virtualisation type and whether the provider permits nested features or kernel functions required by the panel.
- Treat published minimums as installer baselines, not performance guarantees. Hestia lists 1 core, 1 GB RAM without SpamAssassin and ClamAV, and 10 GB disk as minimums; it recommends 4 cores, 4 GB RAM, and a 40 GB SSD for a fuller stack. CyberPanel lists 1,024 MB RAM and 10 GB disk minimum.
- Budget additional storage for the operating system, logs, database growth, WordPress media, plugin updates, local backups, and any mail queues. A site with several large backups can consume a 10 GB disk quickly.
Prepare DNS and administrative access
Have a domain name, access to its DNS zone, and a stable VPS address. Decide on a fully qualified hostname such as server.example.net; it should resolve to the VPS’s address before or during installation as required by the panel. Ensure you can log in over SSH as root or through a provider account that can become root. Record the provider’s console-access method in case SSH is blocked after a firewall change.

Snapshot before changing anything
Take a provider snapshot immediately after provisioning and before running the installer. Also save the intended hostname, panel choice, selected services, SSH key details, and a secure location for credentials. A snapshot is a recovery point, not a substitute for an ongoing WordPress backup strategy.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Prepare the Ubuntu VPS safely
- Log in over SSH. Use the provider’s documented root login or elevate to root with the provider-approved method. Panel installers generally require root privileges and may refuse to run as an unprivileged user.
- Apply vendor security updates. Update the fresh image using Ubuntu’s normal package-management procedure, then reboot if the provider or update process requires it. Do not install a separate web stack while preparing the host.
- Set the hostname. Configure the fully qualified hostname in the provider panel and Ubuntu, then verify that local hostname resolution and the public DNS record agree. A mismatch can break certificate issuance, mail configuration, or panel login links.
- Check listening services. Confirm that no previous web server, database, mail daemon, or custom firewall is occupying ports the panel expects. If the image is genuinely fresh, the service list should be minimal.
- Confirm time and access. Verify the system clock, keep an SSH session or provider console available, and make sure you know how to recover if the firewall closes port 22.
- Record the snapshot identifier. Write down when it was taken and what was installed. If an installer fails midway, restoring that image is usually safer than trying to remove a partially installed stack.
Install the selected panel
HestiaCP
Obtain the current Hestia installer from its official documentation and run it as root. The documented installer exposes choices for hostname, administrator email and password, web server, PHP-FPM, database, firewall, Fail2Ban, and panel port. Review every option before confirming; enabling mail, anti-spam, and antivirus services changes the memory and storage requirement. Hestia’s default panel access uses port 8083, so allow that port only as broadly as your administration model requires.
Do not copy an old command from a forum post. Installer options and supported Ubuntu releases change, and a stale command can select obsolete PHP packages or an unsupported repository. After the script completes, save the generated panel URL and credentials in a password manager and sign in over HTTPS.
CyberPanel
Use CyberPanel’s current official installation guide after confirming that the VPS is fresh and that its Ubuntu release is supported. During setup, choose the OpenLiteSpeed path if you want the free OpenLiteSpeed edition, and understand that Enterprise LiteSpeed is a separate licensed edition. The panel’s workflow is designed to create websites, install WordPress, manage SSL certificates, and configure email from the dashboard, but you should still verify the resulting PHP and database versions against WordPress’s requirements.
The published 1,024 MB RAM and 10 GB disk figures are minimums. They can be insufficient once you add a database, page cache, plugins, logs, mail, and backups. Select a larger VPS before installation if those services will share the machine.

aaPanel
Follow aaPanel’s current quick-start installer and choose Ubuntu 22.04 if you have no reason to use another supported release. After installation, inspect the selected web server and PHP packages in the dashboard. The interface can create sites, databases, certificates, backups, and monitoring rules, but the defaults may not automatically match PHP 8.3 and the current MariaDB or MySQL baseline. Install or select the required versions before deploying WordPress.
ISPConfig
Use ISPConfig’s current installation guide for the exact topology: single-server, multiserver, Apache2, or Nginx. Its administration-oriented workflow gives granular control over web-server and hosting settings, which is useful when one VPS serves multiple sites or when separate database and web roles are needed. Follow the guide’s package and hostname sequence precisely; do not mix instructions from a different Ubuntu release or topology.
Secure the panel after installation
- Open the documented panel port. Use the hostname and port printed by the installer. Hestia uses 8083 by default; other panels may use a different port. If you cannot connect, check both the provider firewall and the panel’s own firewall.
- Replace temporary credentials. Set a unique administrator password, store it in a password manager, and remove any temporary credentials the installer created. Keep SSH keys as the primary server-login method and disable password SSH authentication only after confirming key access through a second session.
- Limit administrative exposure. Where practical, restrict the panel port to your office or VPN addresses. If you cannot use an allowlist, enforce strong credentials, multi-factor authentication when available, and automatic security updates supported by the panel.
- Enable HTTPS for the panel. Point the panel hostname to the VPS and use its current certificate workflow. Do not enter administrative credentials into an unencrypted HTTP session.
- Review firewall and intrusion protection. Confirm that SSH, HTTP, HTTPS, DNS if needed, mail ports if intentionally enabled, and the panel port are the only required public services. Check Fail2Ban or equivalent rules so an overly aggressive policy does not lock out your recovery address.
Create the WordPress site in the panel
The labels differ between panels, but the underlying sequence is stable. A panel may automate several steps; verify each one rather than assuming the wizard selected a current runtime.
- Create the website or domain. Add the exact domain and any required
wwwhostname. Select the document root and enable the web server configuration generated by the panel. - Select PHP 8.3 or newer. Choose a supported PHP-FPM or equivalent handler for that site. Confirm that the MySQL/MariaDB PHP extension is installed; WordPress cannot connect to its database without it.
- Create a database and dedicated user. Use MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer. Generate a long, unique password and grant the user access only to this site’s database. Record the database name, username, host, and password in a password manager.
- Install WordPress. Use the panel’s verified WordPress installer if it exposes the required versions, or upload the official WordPress package to the site’s document root. Avoid scripts from untrusted download mirrors.
- Create
wp-config.phpif necessary. Enter the database name, user, password, and host supplied by the panel. Protect the file with the ownership and permissions recommended by the panel and WordPress documentation. - Run the browser installer. Open the site’s URL, choose the site title and administrator account, and complete the installation. Never reuse the VPS root password for the WordPress administrator.
- Set the canonical HTTPS address. In WordPress settings, confirm that both WordPress Address and Site Address use the final HTTPS URL. Redirect HTTP to HTTPS through the panel only after the certificate works.
- Verify permalinks and scheduled tasks. Save the desired permalink structure, test a post and a media upload, and check whether the panel uses WP-Cron or a system cron job. High-traffic sites often benefit from a system cron configuration, but use the panel’s documented method.
Point DNS and issue the HTTPS certificate
DNS records
Create an A record for the domain pointing to the VPS IPv4 address and an AAAA record only if the VPS has working IPv6 configured end to end. Add the required record for www, either as an A/AAAA record or a CNAME to the root name, according to your DNS provider’s interface. If the panel also manages DNS, decide which service is authoritative; publishing records in a non-authoritative panel will not change public resolution.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
DNS changes can be cached for the duration of the existing TTL. Test resolution from more than one network before concluding that the web server is misconfigured. A stale A record, an incorrect AAAA record, or a registrar still using different nameservers is a common reason a newly installed site appears unreachable.

HTTPS
Use the panel’s certificate feature after DNS resolves to the VPS. The certificate authority must be able to reach the domain over the validation method selected by the panel, normally through HTTP or HTTPS. Confirm that the certificate covers both the root domain and www if both are used. Test the site in a private browser window, verify that images and scripts load over HTTPS, and then enable the HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect.
Verify the server before installing plugins
- Check the panel’s PHP version screen and confirm PHP 8.3 or later is selected for the WordPress site.
- Check the database server version and confirm MariaDB 10.11 or later or MySQL 8.0 or later.
- Use WordPress’s Site Health screen to identify missing PHP extensions, HTTPS problems, loopback failures, and scheduled-task errors.
- Upload a test image and update a staging or low-risk plugin to confirm ownership and write permissions.
- Open a post with pretty permalinks, submit a password-reset email, and inspect the web-server error log and PHP log for warnings.
- Run a restore test for the first backup before the site receives important content. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Troubleshoot common installation failures
The installer refuses to run
Recheck the four usual causes: the VPS is not fresh, the command is not running as root, the Ubuntu release or CPU architecture is unsupported, or an existing Nginx, Apache, MySQL, MariaDB, mail, or firewall service is active. Do not repeatedly rerun a failed script on a partially modified machine. Read the installer log, compare the host with the panel’s current requirements, and restore the pre-installation snapshot when the state is uncertain.
The panel URL does not open
Confirm the correct hostname and port, then test the hostname’s A and AAAA records. Check the provider-level firewall, the panel firewall, and whether the service is listening on the expected interface. If SSH still works, use the panel’s service-status and log views; if SSH is blocked, use the provider console rather than disabling every firewall rule blindly.
WordPress reports that the MySQL extension is missing
Verify that the site is using the PHP version you selected and that its MySQL/MariaDB extension package is installed and enabled. Panels can install several PHP versions with separate extension sets, so an extension enabled for PHP 8.2 may be absent from PHP 8.3. Restart the relevant PHP handler through the panel and retest the installer.
Uploads, updates, or automatic installs fail
Inspect the document-root ownership and permissions generated by the panel. The web-server user must be able to write to the directories WordPress uses for uploads and updates, while configuration files should not be broadly writable. Correct ownership with the panel’s file-management or server-configuration tools instead of applying a blanket world-writable permission.
Best Value
The site is unreachable after DNS was changed
Check the authoritative nameservers, A and AAAA records, provider firewall, panel firewall, virtual-host entry, and certificate status in that order. An incorrect AAAA record can send IPv6-capable visitors to a different server even when IPv4 is correct. Temporarily remove an unused AAAA record rather than leaving a broken IPv6 route published.
Pages are slow or the VPS runs out of memory
Installer minimums do not account for traffic, plugins, mail, backups, database buffers, or antivirus services. Hestia’s 1-core/1-GB minimum is notably different from its 4-core/4-GB recommendation for a fuller stack, and CyberPanel’s 1,024 MB minimum is likewise only a starting point. Monitor memory, swap, CPU steal time, disk latency, PHP worker saturation, and database slow queries. Resize the VPS or remove unused services before adding more caching layers.
Backups, updates, and ongoing administration
Back up at two levels
Keep provider snapshots for rapid whole-server rollback and separate WordPress backups containing the database and wp-content. Store at least one copy outside the VPS. Schedule backups through the panel only after checking retention, encryption, storage limits, and restore procedures. A snapshot taken while a database is writing is useful for disaster recovery but is not a substitute for application-aware backup retention.
Patch the operating system and panel
Track Ubuntu security updates, panel updates, PHP security releases, the database server, WordPress core, themes, and plugins. Read the panel’s release notes before a major upgrade because a change in PHP or web-server version can affect extensions and rewrite rules. Remove abandoned plugins and disable services you do not use, especially mail components on a web-only VPS.
Document access and recovery
Record the panel URL and port, VPS address, hostname, DNS provider, SSH keys, backup location, database credentials, and the snapshot identifier. Keep recovery instructions separate from the VPS so a server compromise does not remove your only copy. Review administrator accounts and SSH authorized keys periodically.

A practical decision checklist
- Choose HestiaCP for a familiar Nginx/PHP-FPM hosting panel and accept its broader service footprint.
- Choose CyberPanel when OpenLiteSpeed is a deliberate requirement and you have verified its current Ubuntu support and edition.
- Choose aaPanel when a visual dashboard for websites, databases, certificates, monitoring, and backups is the priority; verify its selected stack.
- Choose ISPConfig when you need more administration-oriented Apache/Nginx and multi-server controls.
- Use a fresh supported Ubuntu LTS image, root SSH access, a resolvable hostname, and a provider snapshot.
- Confirm PHP 8.3+, MariaDB 10.11+ or MySQL 8.0+, HTTPS, and sufficient CPU, RAM, and disk before creating the site.
- After installation, secure the panel, create the domain and database, configure DNS and HTTPS, run WordPress, test uploads and permalinks, and verify a restorable backup.
