Find a clear view of the sky before mounting
Starlink needs an unobstructed view of the sky to stay connected as satellites move overhead. Trees, branches, poles, rooflines, and nearby structures can interrupt that view. A position that seems open from the ground may still be blocked from the dish’s planned height, so check the actual installation point rather than choosing by appearance alone.

Starlink’s pre-install obstruction guidance uses the app to assess a proposed location. This is different from the obstruction map the system builds after the dish is online: that map reflects actual satellite connections and may take up to 12 hours to complete.

Install or open the Starlink app at the property and open its location-finding or obstruction-scan tool. Select the matching Starlink hardware when prompted.

Stand at the exact planned dish location and hold your phone at the planned dish height. Follow the guided scan. A scan from another spot, height, or perspective may not represent the dish’s actual view.

Review the scan for trees, buildings, rooflines, or other obstacles. Repeat it at other candidate locations if the view is blocked or you have a better position to compare.

If ground-level locations are obstructed, test an elevated roof, wall, or pole position—and scan again at that proposed height.

Starlink’s guided obstruction-scan instructions also stress positioning the phone at the intended dish location. Use the app’s result as a placement check, not as a guarantee of a particular speed or service outcome.

Choose a position and mount that work together
There is no single best mount for every home. Compare candidate locations based on their scan results, the mount’s compatibility with your dish and mounting surface, safe access for installation and maintenance, and a practical route for protecting the cable.

These are options, not a ranking. Starlink’s installation page describes mounting options and cable protection; the wall-mount guide gives model-specific clearance guidance. Check the guide for your kit before buying or installing a mount.
Install and align the dish using its model-specific guide
Once you have selected a scanned position and compatible mount, install and connect the kit according to its own instructions. Starlink setup behavior varies by model: some dishes align automatically, while others use an alignment tool in the app. Follow the directions for your hardware instead of assuming that every dish needs the same orientation or should be repositioned manually.
The rectangular setup guide includes guidance for that hardware. Do not treat its orientation directions as universal for other Starlink models. If you are using a wall mount, consult its installation guide for the required rotation clearance.

Protect the cable and check the live obstruction map
For a permanent installation, plan how the cable will be routed and protected for long-term reliability. The appropriate route and protection depend on your kit and building; follow the product instructions rather than assuming one routing method fits every installation.
After the dish has operated, review the obstruction map in the app. It uses actual connections and can take up to 12 hours to complete. If it shows persistent obstructions, consider a clearer location or a safe elevation change, then check the view again.

Obstruction alerts can result from trees or branches, a dish that has shifted, or material such as leaves, soil, or snow on the dish. Starlink’s obstruction troubleshooting guidance recommends addressing the obstruction, relocating the dish, or raising it with a suitable mount where appropriate.

Check whether the dish has shifted from its intended position.

Look for leaves, soil, snow, or other material on the dish and address it as the model instructions allow.

If a safer, clearer position is available, scan it before relocating or raising the dish.
