To install a resource pack in Minecraft Java Edition, download a Java-compatible pack as a .zip, open Options > Resource Packs > Open Resource Pack Folder, copy the ZIP into that folder, select it under Available Resource Packs, and click Done. Leave the file zipped. If Minecraft does not show it, check that pack.mcmeta is at the ZIP’s top level and that the pack targets the Java version you are playing.

What a Minecraft resource pack is
A resource pack changes Minecraft’s presentation files without changing the game’s underlying worlds. Depending on the pack, that can include block and item textures, mob appearances, menus, icons, sounds, fonts, or other visual assets. Older guides and download pages often call these files “texture packs”; in current Minecraft Java Edition menus, the feature is called Resource Packs.

This guide covers the Java Edition ZIP workflow. Java and Bedrock Edition use different package formats and import methods, so a Bedrock .mcpack file is not a substitute for the Java process below.
Before you download anything
Confirm the edition
Start by checking that the download is explicitly labeled for Minecraft Java Edition. A pack advertised only for Bedrock Edition may use a .mcpack file and will not appear through Java’s resource-pack folder in the normal way.

Match the Minecraft version
Resource packs are authored for particular Java releases. Choose a release that targets the version you launch. A pack made for a different release may be flagged as incompatible, may display only some assets, or may load with visual errors. Do not assume that a pack marked “latest” matches the version installed in your launcher; read the pack’s stated compatibility before downloading.
Keep the Java download as a ZIP
A conventional Java resource pack is normally a .zip archive. Save that ZIP somewhere you can find, but do not extract it for the standard installation. Minecraft reads the pack from the archive when the ZIP is placed in its resource-pack directory.

.zip. - Do not substitute: a Bedrock
.mcpackfile. - Do not extract by default: leave the Java pack compressed unless the pack’s own documentation gives a specific reason to do otherwise.
Install the resource pack in Minecraft Java Edition
1. Launch the Java Edition you intend to play
Open Minecraft Java Edition and wait for the title screen. If you have several installations or profiles, launch the same version for which you selected the resource pack. Version matching is important because the game’s resource-pack format and asset set can change between releases.
2. Open the Resource Packs screen
From the title screen, select Options, then choose Resource Packs. Mojang’s published instructions use this exact menu sequence: “On the main menu, select Options and then Resource Packs.”
3. Open Minecraft’s actual resource-pack folder
On the Resource Packs screen, select Open Resource Pack Folder. Minecraft opens the directory used by that installation. This is the most reliable method because it avoids guessing a Windows, macOS, or Linux path and works even when the game is installed in a non-default location.
Leave the folder window open or minimize it while you complete the next step. You will return to Minecraft after copying the file.
4. Copy the ZIP into the folder
Copy or drag the downloaded Java resource-pack .zip into the folder Minecraft opened. Keep the ZIP itself in that directory; do not place only its inner files there for the normal workflow.
If your download arrived inside another archive, first locate the actual resource-pack ZIP. Some download pages package several files together, so the file you copy should be the pack archive, not a readme, screenshot, or unrelated launcher file.

5. Move the pack into the selected list
Return to Minecraft’s Resource Packs screen. The pack should appear under Available Resource Packs. Select its icon or arrow to move it to the active, selected list. If several packs are active, their order can affect which assets you see when they contain files with the same names.
6. Apply the change with Done
Choose Done. Minecraft reloads its resources and applies the selected pack. The reload can take a moment, particularly with a large or high-resolution pack. Do not delete the ZIP after enabling it: Minecraft needs the file in the resource-pack folder whenever you want to select it again.

7. Verify it in a world
Open a world and inspect a block, item, interface element, or other asset that the pack is intended to change. A test world is useful because you can check a known block without risking a long survival session. If the expected texture is visible and the pack remains in the selected list, installation is complete.
Java ZIP packs versus Bedrock packs
The two editions are not interchangeable. Use this distinction before troubleshooting a file that never appears in the list.

If a download page offers both editions, choose the Java file and follow the Java labels. Renaming a Bedrock file or dropping it into the Java folder does not convert it.
What the resource-pack screen tells you
Available Resource Packs
This list contains packs Minecraft has found in the folder but has not currently enabled. A newly copied ZIP normally appears here after the Resource Packs screen refreshes. Select the pack to move it to the active list.

The active or selected list
Packs in the selected list are applied. If more than one selected pack changes the same block, item, mob, or interface asset, the pack with higher priority can override the same file from a lower-priority pack. This is why a correctly installed pack can appear to do nothing: another selected pack may be supplying the texture you are looking at.
The Done button
Adding a pack to the list is not the final confirmation. Choose Done to reload Minecraft’s resources. If you close the menu without applying the change, return to the screen and confirm that the pack is still selected.

Troubleshoot a pack that does not appear
Check that the file is really a ZIP
Look at the downloaded file’s extension. A Java pack should normally end in .zip. If your operating system hides extensions, enable extension display or inspect the file properties so that you do not mistake a folder, a Bedrock .mcpack, or a larger download bundle for the Java archive.
Check the archive’s top level for pack.mcmeta
Minecraft uses pack.mcmeta to recognize a conventional resource pack. Open the ZIP with an archive utility and inspect its first level. The file should be visible at the archive root, alongside the pack’s asset directories. If you open the ZIP and see one enclosing folder first, then find pack.mcmeta inside that folder, the archive has an extra top-level directory and may not be detected.
For example, this structure is suitable:
my-pack.zip
├── pack.mcmeta
├── pack.png
└── assets/This nested structure can prevent recognition:
my-pack.zip
└── my-pack/
├── pack.mcmeta
└── assets/If the download includes an extra enclosing folder, recreate the archive so that pack.mcmeta is at the top level, or obtain a correctly packaged release from the pack author. Preserve the ZIP format when you place it back in Minecraft’s folder.
Refresh the menu after copying
If the ZIP was copied while Minecraft’s Resource Packs screen was open and it is not listed, leave the screen and open it again. If necessary, return to the title screen, reopen Options > Resource Packs, and check the list once more. Verify that the file was copied into the folder opened by Minecraft rather than into a nearby downloads or screenshots directory.
Make sure it targets Java
A pack can be a valid ZIP and still be the wrong edition. Recheck the download’s edition label. A Bedrock package is not made compatible with Java by changing its filename.
Troubleshoot an incompatibility warning
Minecraft can mark a pack as incompatible when its metadata targets a different resource-pack format or release. The warning is a compatibility signal, not a recommendation to force the pack. Download a release made for the Java version currently installed and launch that version when you test it.
Compatibility labels are not a guarantee that every asset will look identical across releases. A pack may load while leaving some newer blocks, menus, or items unchanged if it does not include files for them. Check the pack’s stated target version and read any version notes supplied with the download.
Troubleshoot a world that looks unchanged
Confirm that the pack is selected
Return to Options > Resource Packs and check that the pack is in the active list, not merely under Available Resource Packs. Choose Done again to force a resource reload.

Test an asset the pack actually changes
Many packs have a limited visual scope. A pack might alter only a group of blocks, item icons, menus, or mobs. Inspect an asset named in the pack’s description rather than assuming every texture will change.

Another selected pack may override the same files. Deselect the other packs, choose Done, and test again. If the expected texture appears, re-enable packs one at a time to identify the conflict. You can then keep the desired priority order or use only the pack that supplies the asset you want.
Check the correct world and edition
Make sure you are testing in the Java world launched from the same installation where you enabled the pack. A pack selected in one Java profile does not prove that a different profile or edition is using it.

Disable it without deleting the download
Open Options > Resource Packs, move the pack from the selected list back to Available Resource Packs, and choose Done. The ZIP stays in the folder, so you can enable it again later.
Remove it completely
First disable the pack in Minecraft. Then use the folder opened by Open Resource Pack Folder to delete or move the ZIP. Removing the file does not remove or damage worlds; it only removes that pack from the list.

Disable the old pack, close Minecraft’s resource-pack screen, and replace the old ZIP with the newer Java-compatible ZIP. Reopen the screen, select the replacement, and choose Done. Keeping only one copy prevents confusion when two releases have similar names.
Choosing between resource packs
Installation is the same for ordinary Java ZIP packs, but choosing the right pack affects the result more than the copy operation does. Use these checks before you download:
- Edition and version: verify Java Edition and the exact target release.
- Visual scope: determine whether it changes blocks, items, mobs, GUI elements, sounds, or only a subset of those assets.
- Pack interaction: decide whether it must coexist with other selected packs and whether overlapping assets could be overridden.
- Verification: identify a texture or interface element you can inspect in a test world after enabling it.
- File format: confirm that the download remains a Java
.zipwithpack.mcmetaat the archive root.
These checks prevent the most common false diagnosis: assuming Minecraft failed when the pack is actually for another edition, another version, a different visual scope, or a lower priority.

- You launched Minecraft Java Edition.
- The downloaded pack is explicitly for Java Edition and your Minecraft version.
- The file is a
.zip, and you left it zipped. - You opened Options > Resource Packs > Open Resource Pack Folder from inside Minecraft.
- You copied the ZIP into the folder that opened.
- The archive contains
pack.mcmetaat its root. - The pack appears under Available Resource Packs.
- You moved it to the selected list and clicked Done.
- You checked a texture or other asset the pack is intended to change.
- If the result is unchanged, you tested without another pack overriding the same asset.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to unzip a Java resource pack?
No. For the normal Java workflow, copy the intact .zip into Minecraft’s resource-pack folder. An incorrectly nested archive can prevent detection, but simply extracting every pack is not the standard fix.
Where is the Minecraft resource-pack folder?
Open it from the game: Options > Resource Packs > Open Resource Pack Folder. This avoids relying on an operating-system path that may differ from your installation.
Why is my pack listed as incompatible?
It likely targets a different Java resource-pack format or Minecraft release. Obtain a version made for the Java version you are running instead of forcing the incompatible file.
Can I install a Bedrock .mcpack in Java Edition?
Not through this workflow. Java uses the ZIP-based resource-pack process described above; Bedrock packages use a separate import method.
Why does the pack appear enabled but change nothing?
Check that you are viewing an asset the pack changes, then disable other selected packs and choose Done. A higher-priority pack may be overriding the same file.

It is the metadata file Minecraft expects at the root of a conventional resource-pack archive. If it is buried inside an extra folder, Minecraft may not list the pack.
Will installing a resource pack alter my world?
The installation changes the resources Minecraft uses to display the game. It does not require editing the world itself. You can disable or remove the ZIP and return to the default resources.
