What a Bedrock resource pack file is
Bedrock resource packs replace or add visual assets such as textures, models, sounds, and other files used by a world. The normal distribution format is .mcpack. Microsoft defines an MCPACK file as “A zipped resource or behavior pack that modifies Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, typically used to transfer resources between users.”

The same extension can also contain a behavior pack. If the imported file is a behavior pack rather than a visual resource pack, it will appear under the world’s Behavior Packs tab instead of Resource Packs. Check the pack description before installing so you know which tab to use.
There are two separate actions:
- Import: Opening the file with Minecraft copies it into the game’s available-pack library. A successful import produces a notification.
- Activate: Selecting the pack in a world’s settings applies it to that world. A pack can be imported successfully and still have no effect until it is activated.
This distinction explains many apparently failed installations. The pack may already be present in Minecraft even when an existing world still looks unchanged. Activation is associated with a particular world, so importing once does not automatically apply the pack to every world.

Prepare before installing
Confirm that the file is for Bedrock
Bedrock and Java Edition packs are not interchangeable. Use a file explicitly labeled for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and check any stated game-version requirements. A Java resource pack may use a different structure and will not necessarily import or function in Bedrock. If a download offers separate Java and Bedrock files, choose the Bedrock version before opening anything.
Keep the original download
Save the downloaded .mcpack somewhere you can find again, such as your Downloads folder. Do not rename the extension while troubleshooting. On Windows, turn on visible extensions so you can distinguish a real .mcpack from a file that has accidentally become .mcpack.zip or another name. A file that was renamed instead of imported can look like a pack while remaining unusable to Minecraft.

Microsoft advises saving a copy of the minecraftWorlds folder before installing a new Minecraft build. A backup gives you a recovery point if a world or add-on combination behaves unexpectedly. For extra safety, test an unfamiliar pack on a copy of the world first rather than on the only copy of an important save.
Choose a trustworthy, compatible source
A downloaded MCPACK gives you more control over the file and its installation, but it also exposes manifest, path, and compatibility errors. Check who published the pack, which Bedrock versions it supports, and whether it is a resource pack or a behavior pack. Minecraft Marketplace is the official in-game source when you prefer content delivered through Minecraft’s own interface.
Install a resource pack on Windows 10 or 11
- Download the Bedrock-compatible
.mcpackfile. - Open File Explorer and go to the folder containing the download, normally Downloads.
- Double-click the
.mcpackfile. Minecraft should launch and import it. Wait for the in-game import notification. - In Minecraft, select Play.
- Choose Create New World, or select the pencil icon to edit an existing world.
- Open Settings, scroll to Add-Ons, and select Resource Packs.
- Open My Packs, select the imported pack, and click Activate.
The documented com.mojang location for the main Windows Bedrock release is %appdata%Minecraft Bedrockuserssharedgamescom.mojang. Its finalized pack folders include resource_packs, behavior_packs, and skin_packs. This location is useful when you need to inspect whether an imported pack exists or diagnose a malformed installation. It is not necessary to copy a normal MCPACK there manually; opening the file with Minecraft is the ordinary import method.
Finding the Windows folder
If File Explorer does not show the expected folders, enable Hidden items and File name extensions from File Explorer’s View options. Hidden folders and concealed extensions are common reasons that a user appears to have the wrong path or cannot identify the actual pack file. Paste the documented path into File Explorer’s address bar to go directly to the location.

Install on Android
- Launch Minecraft and download the Bedrock
.mcpackfile, or download it through your browser. - Open the Android Settings app.
- Choose Storage > Explore.
- Open the folder containing the download, usually Download.
- Select the
.mcpackfile. Android should pass it to Minecraft, which imports the pack and displays a confirmation. - Open Minecraft, choose Play, and create or edit the world that should use the pack.
- Go to Settings > Add-Ons > Resource Packs > My Packs, select the pack, and activate it.
Android’s file-opening step is handled by the operating system rather than by a special import button inside Minecraft. If tapping the file opens a different application, return to the file manager and use the option that opens the file with Minecraft. If the file is not in the expected folder, check the browser’s download location and confirm that the extension is still .mcpack.
Install on iPhone or iPad
- Tap the downloaded pack file from its web link, an email attachment, or the location where it was saved in the Files app.
- When iOS or iPadOS asks which app should open it, choose Open in Minecraft.
- Wait for Minecraft’s import confirmation.
- Open the target world’s settings and go to Add-Ons > Resource Packs > My Packs.
- Select the imported pack and activate it.
The file must be handed to Minecraft through the iOS share/open flow. Merely downloading the file without choosing Open in Minecraft does not import it. If you cannot find the download, use the Files app to check the location selected by the browser or the message attachment, then use the share menu and choose Minecraft.
Install on Oculus Rift
For Oculus Rift, use Minecraft for Windows 10 in Rift Mode:
- Start Minecraft for Windows 10 in Rift Mode.
- Download the Bedrock-compatible resource-pack file.
- Navigate to the downloaded file and open it.
- Let Minecraft import the pack, then open the world’s resource-pack settings and activate it.
The Rift procedure follows the Windows file-opening route; the important requirement is that the game is running in Rift Mode when the file is opened. Import and activation remain separate steps here just as they are in the standard Windows edition.
Use a resource pack on a console through Realms
Consoles generally do not provide the same direct file-opening workflow as Windows, Android, or iOS. Microsoft’s documented route uses a Windows 10/11 Bedrock computer and a Realm subscription:
- On the Windows Bedrock computer, import the
.mcpackfile by opening it. - Create or edit a world on that computer.
- Activate the resource pack in the world’s Settings > Add-Ons > Resource Packs menu.
- Upload the prepared, add-on-enhanced world to your Realm.
- On the console, open that world from the Realm.
This route transfers the prepared world rather than directly copying the pack file to the console. The Windows computer, Realm subscription, and world with the add-on already activated are all required by this documented method. A Realm is therefore a delivery route for the prepared world, not a replacement for importing and activating the pack on the Windows computer first.

Install packs from Minecraft Marketplace
Minecraft Marketplace is Minecraft’s official in-game source for Bedrock add-ons, skins, worlds, textures, and mash-up packs. Marketplace items are generally installed through Minecraft’s own interface, so you normally do not download and manually open an MCPACK file for this route.
Menu labels and commercial terms can change. Follow the purchase or download prompts shown in your current Bedrock edition, then check the relevant world or pack settings to apply the content. Marketplace content and manually downloaded packs are separate installation routes; importing a downloaded file is not required for an item obtained through Marketplace. If comparing the routes, Marketplace emphasizes in-game delivery and a trusted source, while a downloaded MCPACK offers more direct control but requires you to verify the file, version, manifest, and folder structure yourself.
Activate, reorder, or remove a pack
Activate it for a world
The activation flow is attached to the world you create or edit. Open Play, select the world’s edit control, and use Settings > Add-Ons > Resource Packs > My Packs. Select the pack and choose Activate. Repeat the activation for each world that should use it. If you want to test a pack without changing an established save, create a new world and activate it there.
Understand pack stacking
Bedrock loads packs in a stack on top of the vanilla files. Microsoft describes pack stacking as content being loaded on top of vanilla content, with an object of the same name overwritten by the latest applied pack. In practice, two packs can both be active while only one supplies a particular texture or sound. A pack can therefore appear installed and active even though a visible asset still comes from another pack.
Change the order
If another active pack overrides the appearance you want, return to the active resource-pack list and move your desired pack above the conflicting pack. Re-enter the world after changing the order so you can check which assets are now visible. When diagnosing a conflict, temporarily activate only the pack you are testing; then add other packs back one at a time.

Remove a pack from one world
Edit the world, open its active resource-pack list, and deactivate or remove the pack there. Removing it from a world’s active list does not require deleting the imported copy from the available-pack library. Keeping the imported copy is useful if you plan to activate it again in another world.

Troubleshoot common installation problems
The pack does not appear in My Packs
- Check the manifest: A Bedrock pack requires a valid
manifest.json. - Check UUIDs: The manifest’s header and module entries must use two different UUIDs.
- Check the extension: Make sure the file is actually an
.mcpackand that file extensions are visible when you inspect it. - Check the JSON: Balanced braces and brackets are required. A malformed JSON file can prevent the pack from being recognized.
- Reopen the file with Minecraft: If no import notification appeared, open the original download again using the platform-specific method above.
- Confirm the pack type: A behavior pack will be listed under Behavior Packs, not under Resource Packs.
The pack appears, but nothing changes
- Confirm activation: Importing the file is not the same as activating it for the world.
- Inspect folder placement: The
texturesfolder and other pack folders must be in the locations expected by the pack’s structure. - Check spelling: Folder and file names must match the expected names exactly.
- Check replacement names: If the pack is replacing a vanilla asset, the replacement must use the same filename as the vanilla asset it is intended to replace.
- Check for an override: Another active pack may be supplying the same asset later in the stack.
- Check the version requirement: A pack made for a different Bedrock version may import yet fail to display all of its intended content.
Another pack keeps overriding it
Open the active resource-pack list and move the pack whose files you want to see above the conflicting pack. Because later-applied content can overwrite matching filenames, order determines which duplicate asset wins. If changing the order does not clarify the result, deactivate the other pack temporarily and test again.
Windows cannot find com.mojang
Use File Explorer’s address bar with %appdata%Minecraft Bedrockuserssharedgamescom.mojang. If the path or its contents remain hidden, enable Hidden items and File name extensions. The finalized folders relevant to packs are resource_packs, behavior_packs, and skin_packs. Avoid guessing at a different folder until hidden items and extensions are visible.
A world behaves unexpectedly after an installation
Stop and restore the backup of minecraftWorlds you made before changing the installation or building a new Minecraft version. Then test the pack in a copy of the world, activate only the required pack, and add other packs one at a time so an override or invalid pack can be identified. This isolates whether the problem belongs to the world, the pack’s files, or the interaction between multiple active packs.

Use the Marketplace route when you want in-game acquisition and installation. Use a downloaded MCPACK when you need manual file control and have checked its Bedrock compatibility. On phones, the key difference is file handling: Android uses Storage > Explore, while iPhone and iPad use Open in Minecraft. On consoles, the documented approach has the highest requirements because it depends on a Windows Bedrock computer, a prepared world, and a Realm subscription.
