Install a free Let’s Encrypt certificate in Virtualmin from Manage Virtual Server → Setup SSL Certificate → SSL Providers. Select Let’s Encrypt, keep every domain and alias that should be covered, enable automatic renewal, run the connectivity check, and request the certificate. The request will succeed only when public DNS resolves those names to the Virtualmin server and its Apache or Nginx virtual host serves the expected site.

Let’s Encrypt validates control of each hostname from outside your network. Virtualmin cannot complete that check when the name points somewhere else, is hidden on a private network, or reaches a different virtual host. Prepare the server and DNS first.
DNS records point to this Virtualmin server
- Create an A record for the domain that points to the server’s IPv4 address.
- If the domain has an AAAA record, it must point to the server’s correct IPv6 address. An incorrect AAAA record can make validation fail even when the A record is right, because an ACME validator may try IPv6.
- Allow time for DNS changes to propagate. Check the public result, not only a local hosts-file override or an internal DNS server.
Every name you request—including aliases and additional hostnames—needs a public record that reaches this server. A certificate request does not repair DNS.

The web server answers for the expected site
Virtualmin’s Apache or Nginx virtual host must be enabled and associated with the domain’s intended document root. A request that reaches another site, a default server, or an empty virtual host can fail validation even though the domain resolves to the right IP.
Use a supported, reachable installation
Virtualmin’s automated installer assumes a fresh supported operating system and a domain whose DNS records point to the server. The domain must be reachable from the public internet. A dedicated IP address is not required for modern SSL configurations.
Expect a self-signed certificate initially
Virtualmin initially creates a self-signed certificate. Browsers warn about it because it is not trusted by public certificate authorities. Replace it with the Let’s Encrypt certificate after DNS and reachability are ready.
Cost, IP addresses, and certificate scope
Let’s Encrypt certificates are free, so the certificate itself does not add a licensing charge to a Virtualmin server. You still need a reachable server and DNS service; those infrastructure costs are separate. If you are choosing a host, look for Virtualmin-ready VPS hosting or server hosting for Virtualmin, and confirm that the operating system is supported and that you can manage the required DNS records.
No dedicated IP needed: Modern SSL setups don’t require a dedicated IP per domain.
A shared address can serve several Virtualmin virtual servers when each hostname resolves to that address and the web server selects the correct virtual host. The important requirement is not a unique IP, but a public route from each requested name to the intended site.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCertificate coverage is determined by names in the request. The apex name, aliases, and subdomains are separate names for this purpose. Decide which names customers actually use before issuance so you do not have to repeat the request immediately.
Install through the Virtualmin web interface
Use an administrator account and work inside the virtual server that owns the domain.
- Sign in. Log in to Virtualmin with an administrator account.
- Select the virtual server. Choose the domain you want to secure from the virtual-server list.
- Open the certificate page. Go to Manage Virtual Server → Setup SSL Certificate.
- Open the provider selector. Select the SSL Providers tab.
- Review the names. Keep the main domain and the aliases already listed. Add every additional hostname that users will visit over HTTPS. A certificate for
example.comdoes not automatically include an unrelated name such asshop.example.comunless that name is included in the request. - Choose Let’s Encrypt. Select Let’s Encrypt as the SSL certificate provider.
- Turn on renewal. Enable Automatically renew certificate. Virtualmin’s 2024 guidance describes Let’s Encrypt certificates as typically valid for 90 days, so leaving renewal enabled avoids an avoidable expiry.
- Run the preflight check. Use Check connectivity first when that option is available. It checks whether the requested names can be reached before Virtualmin submits the certificate request.
- Submit the request. Click Request Certificate and wait for Virtualmin to report the result.
If issuance succeeds, Virtualmin installs the certificate and key for that virtual server and updates the web-server configuration. Repeat the process for each separate virtual server that needs its own certificate.
What to review before submitting
Read the complete hostname list one more time. Remove a stale alias only if it should no longer work, because removing it from the request means that name will not be covered. Conversely, adding a hostname that has no public DNS record can cause the whole request to fail. Make DNS changes first, wait for public propagation, and then use the connectivity check.

The check is a preflight, not a substitute for testing after issuance. A site can pass the check and later fail if its DNS, firewall, Apache or Nginx configuration changes. Keep a note of the names included so future DNS or virtual-host edits do not accidentally break renewal.
Choose the complete hostname set
The most common configuration mistake is requesting a certificate for only the apex domain while users also access aliases or subdomains. Decide the public names first, then include them in the request.
Main domain and aliases
Virtualmin normally proposes the primary domain and its configured aliases. Do not remove an alias that should continue to work over HTTPS. Add other names in the additional-domain field before clicking Request Certificate.
Wildcard certificates
The Also request wildcard certificate option can cover subdomains, but Virtualmin makes it available only when Virtualmin controls the DNS zone. Wildcard issuance uses DNS validation: Virtualmin must be able to create temporary validation records in that zone. If DNS is hosted elsewhere, use explicit hostnames or move DNS control to a setup Virtualmin can manage; selecting the wildcard option alone cannot bypass that requirement.
Even with a wildcard, keep the base domain in the certificate when visitors will use it. A wildcard for *.example.com covers one-level subdomains, not the bare example.com name.
Wildcard coverage also does not correct a web-server mapping mistake. Every subdomain that visitors use still needs to resolve to the server and be handled by the appropriate virtual host. DNS control is required for the validation record, while the web-server configuration determines which content visitors receive after validation.
Force visitors to use HTTPS
Installing a certificate makes HTTPS available; it does not necessarily redirect existing HTTP links. After issuance, open the virtual server’s website settings and enable the redirect:
- Open Web Configuration → Website Options.
- Enable the HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect setting.
- Save the change and test both the HTTP and HTTPS addresses in a private browser window.
Test the final public URL rather than relying only on Virtualmin’s success message. Check the address with each important alias, because a name omitted from the certificate can still produce a browser warning.

Check every included name
Open each alias and additional hostname over HTTPS. A successful request for the main domain does not prove that every requested name resolves to the same server or is covered by the certificate.
Confirm the redirect behavior
Enter the HTTP form of the address and verify that it ends at the HTTPS URL. If it does not, revisit Web Configuration → Website Options; certificate installation and redirect configuration are separate settings.
Check after configuration changes
Repeat the browser checks after changing DNS, aliases, document roots, or the Apache/Nginx virtual-host configuration. The certificate can remain installed while the hostname begins serving the wrong site. Checking the page content as well as the lock indicator catches that error.
Install or renew from the command line
For repeatable administration, scripting, or servers where you prefer a shell, Virtualmin provides the generate-letsencrypt-cert API program.
Issue a certificate and configure renewal
virtualmin generate-letsencrypt-cert --domain example.com --check-first --renew
Replace example.com with the Virtualmin domain. The options have distinct jobs:
--domainidentifies the virtual server that will receive the certificate.--check-firstasks Virtualmin to verify external connectivity before requesting the certificate.--renewconfigures automatic renewal near expiry.
Run the command with the same public names you intend to test in a browser. The API and web interface use the same underlying reachability requirements, so a shell command cannot bypass incorrect DNS or an unavailable virtual host.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Control the exact hostname list
Use --host repeatedly when the certificate should contain an explicit set of names. For example:
virtualmin generate-letsencrypt-cert --domain example.com --host example.com --host www.example.com --host shop.example.com --check-first --renew
Each hostname still needs public DNS and must reach the appropriate virtual host. The command does not make an incorrectly pointed alias valid.
When you already have a certificate
If another certificate authority or an external ACME process issued the files, do not use the Let’s Encrypt generator. In the web interface, open the Update Certificate and Key tab and provide the certificate and key. The API equivalent is:
virtualmin install-cert --domain example.com --cert /path/fullchain.pem --key /path/privkey.pem --ca /path/ca.pem
install-cert checks the certificate and key format and verifies that they match before updating the web-server configuration. A malformed file or a key mismatch causes the command to stop before changing that configuration.

UI or command line: which method fits?
| Decision point | Web interface | Command line/API |
|---|---|---|
| Ease of use | Guided fields and buttons; suitable for a one-off domain or administrators who prefer a visual workflow. | Shell-based and scriptable; useful for repeatable operations and automated server management. |
| Hostname control | Keep aliases and add names in the certificate request fields. | Specify an exact list with repeated --host options. |
| Preflight validation | Check connectivity first. | --check-first. |
| Renewal setup | Enable Automatically renew certificate. | Include --renew. |
| Wildcard eligibility | Wildcard option is available only when Virtualmin controls DNS. | The same DNS-control requirement applies; the API does not remove it. |
| Installing an externally issued certificate | Use Update Certificate and Key. | Use virtualmin install-cert with certificate, key, and optional CA paths. |
Use the interface when you want visible fields and an immediate connectivity check. Use the API when you manage several domains, need a repeatable command, or want the hostname list recorded in a script. Neither method is inherently more reliable: both depend on the same public DNS and virtual-host response.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a failed request
Read the failed hostname in Virtualmin’s message, then work through the branch that matches the symptom. Fix the underlying condition before repeating the request.
DNS validation failure
- Check the public A record and make sure it contains the current server IPv4 address.
- Check the public AAAA record. Remove a stale AAAA record or correct it if IPv6 reaches a different machine.
- Verify that the exact alias or additional hostname named in the error has a record; the apex record alone is not enough.
- Wait for propagation after changing DNS, then run Check connectivity first or rerun the command with
--check-first.
Do not rely solely on a local hosts entry. A local override can make the site look correct to you while the public validator still reaches another address.
The wrong site appears
If the name resolves but the validation request receives another site, inspect the Apache or Nginx virtual-host configuration and the domain’s document root. Ensure the requested hostname is attached to the intended Virtualmin virtual server and that the web service has reloaded the current configuration.
This symptom is distinct from a missing DNS record: the validator reached the server, but the server selected the wrong site. Test the hostname itself, not just the server IP, because virtual-host selection depends on the requested name.
Wildcard issuance fails
Confirm that the DNS zone is managed by Virtualmin. The wildcard workflow requires Virtualmin to create temporary DNS-validation records. When DNS is managed by an outside provider, request explicit hostnames instead or use a DNS arrangement Virtualmin can update.
The initial server-hostname certificate cannot be issued
During initial installation, Virtualmin may try to secure the server hostname. If that hostname is not publicly resolvable or the required web ports cannot be reached, log in at the server IP while the browser displays a warning. Correct the hostname’s DNS and reachability, then request a valid certificate afterward.
An externally supplied certificate will not install
Use install-cert or the Update Certificate and Key tab, and verify that the certificate is in the expected PEM format, the private key belongs to it, and any supplied CA chain file is readable. Virtualmin performs format and matching checks before changing the web-server configuration, so a failure at this stage points to the files rather than a partially updated virtual host.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A name works on HTTP but not HTTPS
Confirm that the name was included in the certificate request and that its HTTPS virtual-host configuration is attached to the same Virtualmin server. An HTTP success proves only that the name reaches a web service; it does not prove certificate coverage or correct HTTPS mapping.
Renewal planning
For a certificate generated by Virtualmin, enable automatic renewal in the UI or include --renew with the API command. Renewal is configured near expiry; it is not a replacement for keeping DNS and the virtual host reachable. If a domain’s A or AAAA record changes later, or a firewall and web-server configuration stops serving the name, the renewal validation can fail even though the original issuance succeeded.
Best Value
Let’s Encrypt certificates typically have a 90-day validity period, so treat renewal as an ongoing configuration requirement rather than a one-time task. Keep the renewal setting enabled for every virtual server and retain the complete hostname list. A later alias addition may require updating the certificate request so that the new name is covered as well.
When troubleshooting a renewal alert, test the same public names and virtual host that were used for the original request. Correct DNS, restore the expected site response, and then rerun the generator with --check-first. After a successful renewal, revisit the HTTPS URL and inspect the current certificate to verify that the new validity period is being served.
Operational checklist for administrators
- Record the primary domain, aliases, additional hostnames, and any wildcard requirement.
- Confirm public A and AAAA records before touching the certificate page.
- Verify that each name reaches the intended Apache or Nginx virtual host and document root.
- Request through SSL Providers or run
generate-letsencrypt-certwith--check-first. - Enable automatic renewal in the interface or pass
--renewto the API. - Test HTTPS for every included name and confirm that the certificate is trusted and current.
- Enable the HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect under Web Configuration → Website Options if all traffic should use HTTPS.
- Recheck DNS and virtual-host routing after migrations, IP changes, or web-server configuration edits.
Installation checklist
- Public A and AAAA records point to this Virtualmin server, or no incorrect AAAA record remains.
- The domain and every requested alias resolve publicly and reach the expected Apache or Nginx virtual host.
- The virtual server’s document root serves the intended site.
- The request is opened at Manage Virtual Server → Setup SSL Certificate → SSL Providers, or generated with the supported API.
- All required hostnames are included; wildcard issuance is used only when Virtualmin controls DNS.
- Automatic renewal is enabled in the UI or configured with
--renew. - The resulting HTTPS URL shows a trusted certificate for each hostname and, if desired, HTTP redirects to HTTPS.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the SSL Providers tab in Virtualmin?
Select the virtual server, open Manage Virtual Server → Setup SSL Certificate, and then select the SSL Providers tab.
How do I force my Virtualmin site to use HTTPS?
After installing the certificate, open Web Configuration → Website Options, enable the HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect, save, and test both URL forms.
Why does Let’s Encrypt validation fail in Virtualmin?
The usual causes are an incorrect or stale public A/AAAA record, an alias without DNS, a hostname reaching the wrong Apache or Nginx virtual host, or a wildcard request when Virtualmin does not control DNS.
Do I need a dedicated IP for a Virtualmin SSL certificate?
No. Virtualmin states that modern SSL setups do not require a dedicated IP per domain. Each requested hostname must still resolve to the correct server and virtual host.

How do I renew a Virtualmin Let’s Encrypt certificate from the command line?
Use virtualmin generate-letsencrypt-cert --domain example.com --check-first --renew. The --renew option configures automatic renewal near expiry, while --check-first verifies external connectivity before a request.
Can I request a wildcard certificate if another company hosts my DNS?
Virtualmin’s wildcard option is available only when Virtualmin controls the DNS zone and can create temporary DNS-validation records. Otherwise request explicit hostnames or use DNS that Virtualmin can manage.
What should I do if Virtualmin still shows a self-signed certificate?
Complete the Let’s Encrypt request after correcting public DNS and reachability, then visit the HTTPS address and inspect the certificate. The initial self-signed certificate is expected until it is replaced.

The Bottom Line
Virtualmin’s Let’s Encrypt workflow is straightforward when every requested hostname publicly resolves to the right server and virtual host. Use Manage Virtual Server → Setup SSL Certificate → SSL Providers, include all names, enable renewal, and verify each HTTPS alias. For automation, use generate-letsencrypt-cert with --check-first and --renew; when validation fails, troubleshoot DNS, IPv6, wildcard DNS control, and virtual-host routing before trying again.
