Use Percona’s package repository on a supported 64-bit host, then choose between a clean logical migration and an in-place package replacement. A fresh server gives you a separate rollback point and time to test restores; an in-place change usually needs less storage but ties the cutover to the existing data directory and configuration. In either case, record versions, make and restore-test a complete backup, review configuration and authentication differences, and validate the application before sending production traffic to Percona.

Choose the migration path before installing anything
Percona Server for MySQL is intended to be a compatible, open-source replacement for MySQL. That compatibility is a starting point, not a guarantee that every plugin, authentication method, SQL mode, replication setting or third-party connector will behave identically. Test the exact application and workload you will run.

| Consideration | In-place replacement | Fresh logical migration |
|---|---|---|
| Data location | Retains the existing data directory while packages and binaries are replaced. | Restores exported data into a new Percona instance. |
| Downtime | Usually the service stop, package change and restart, plus upgrade work. | Includes the time to transfer and restore data, followed by a short final cutover. |
| Rollback | Can reuse the old installation if the original packages and data remain intact, but changes to the data directory or system tables can complicate reversal. | Traffic can be switched back to the original server while the new server remains available for investigation. |
| Version jump | Couples the version change to the existing files, settings and metadata. | Lets you test a larger version change on an isolated host before cutover. |
| Capacity | Does not require a second full data copy, although you still need backup space. | Requires capacity for the new data set, staging files and a verified backup. |
| Replication and GTID | Existing replication state must survive the package change and metadata upgrade. | Replication can be rebuilt or rehearsed independently, but the topology needs deliberate planning. |
| Validation | Testing happens around a narrow maintenance window. | Schema, queries, permissions, restore and application checks can be completed before production traffic moves. |
For a busy production database, a fresh host is generally the safer operational boundary when you have the storage and a way to synchronize changes. An in-place replacement is reasonable for a single server with a tested backup, a short maintenance window and a modest version change.

- MySQL 5.7 support ended in October/November 2023. Continuing to run it requires a separate paid post-end-of-life arrangement or a migration plan.
- Percona Server for MySQL 8.0 reached end of life on 1 April 2026. A new deployment should normally evaluate an active 8.4.x or 9.7 LTS line where the host is supported.
- Percona lists 9.7 LTS and 8.4.x as active on specified 64-bit platforms. The 9.7 documentation set identifies 9.7.1-1 as its latest release at the time that documentation was captured; confirm the current package revision before installation.
Do not assume that an upgrade from MySQL 5.7 directly to the newest Percona release is supported on your platform. Read the target release’s upgrade notes, especially for removed options, authentication defaults, data-dictionary changes and replication requirements. If the jump is large, a fresh server and logical migration often exposes incompatibilities earlier than an in-place change.
Make and verify a rollback-capable backup
Do not begin the package replacement until you can recover the source database. Keep the source service and its configuration available until application checks on Percona have passed.

- Record the MySQL or Percona version, distribution release, CPU architecture, data-directory path and package list.
- Save the active
my.cnfand any included configuration files, service-unit overrides, TLS certificates, firewall rules and scheduled jobs. - Document users, grants, authentication plugins, replication sources and replicas, binary-log retention, GTID settings, time zone configuration and application connection strings.
- Measure the data directory, free space, largest tables, temporary space and expected backup size. A logical export can require substantial staging space.
Choose a backup method
Percona XtraBackup is Percona’s open-source backup utility for MySQL and Percona Server. It supports online, non-blocking, compressed and secure full backups. Follow the utility version’s documentation for preparation, copy-back and permission steps. A successful backup command is not proof of recoverability.
A logical export with tools such as mysqldump or a parallel dump utility is useful when moving to a clean instance or changing versions. Include schemas, routines, events, triggers and grants deliberately. Exporting the system database blindly can be unsafe in a GTID environment.
Perform a restore test
- Restore the backup to an isolated host or disposable instance running the intended Percona release.
- Start the restored server with a copy of the production configuration adjusted for the test host.
- Check that every expected schema, table count, routine, event, trigger, user and grant exists.
- Run representative reads and writes, application migrations and reporting queries.
- Measure the restore duration and record any manual steps. That duration is the evidence for your recovery window, not the backup file size alone.
Retain the original backup, the restore-tested copy and the old installation until the cutover is accepted. For high-risk changes, take a final backup after quiescing writes immediately before the switch.

Install a fresh Percona instance
Percona recommends its package repositories where possible. Debian and Ubuntu use APT packages; Red Hat-family systems use YUM or DNF packages. The repository setup utility and package names can change by release, so select the target version in the current Percona installation guide before enabling a repository.
1. Prepare the host
- Apply operating-system updates and reboot if the kernel or libraries require it.
- Use a supported 64-bit architecture, correct hostname and synchronized time.
- Provide storage for the data directory, redo and binary logs, temporary files, the restore staging area and future growth.
- Ensure the service account can read TLS keys and that the firewall allows only the application and administrative networks.
- Stop or remove any competing MySQL service on the new host so only the intended server owns the database port.
2. Enable the Percona repository
Install Percona’s repository-release package or repository utility for the operating system, select the desired Percona Server for MySQL series, and refresh package metadata. Do not mix repositories for different major series on one host. Pin the intended series if your distribution’s package manager would otherwise select a different major version.
3. Install the server packages
On Debian or Ubuntu, after the Percona repository is enabled:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install percona-server-server
On a Red Hat-family system, use the equivalent DNF or YUM workflow:
sudo dnf install percona-server-server
The package may ask for a root-password or authentication choice during installation, depending on the distribution and release. Record the choice in your deployment notes rather than assuming that an older MySQL default still applies.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
4. Start and inspect the service
sudo systemctl enable --now mysql
sudo systemctl status mysql
Some distributions use a different service-unit name. Use the unit installed by the package if mysql is not present. Read the error log immediately after the first start, then confirm the server version and compiled defaults with a local administrative connection.
5. Apply baseline security and configuration
- Set a strong administrative authentication method and remove anonymous accounts or test databases if the package created them.
- Bind the listener only to addresses required by the application. Avoid exposing the database directly to the public internet.
- Configure TLS, password rotation, least-privilege application users and host-based access rules.
- Move data, binary logs or temporary files only after creating the destination directories with the correct ownership and testing a restart.
- Compare the old and new
my.cnfline by line. Remove deprecated options instead of copying them blindly.
6. Load a test copy before production data
Restore the verified backup or a representative subset into the new instance. Check character sets, collations, SQL mode, time zone, generated columns, stored programs, event scheduling and full-text or spatial indexes. Create the application users with the authentication plugin supported by both the connector and the target release. Run schema migrations and smoke tests while the source remains untouched.
Replace MySQL in place
An in-place replacement is a controlled maintenance operation, not simply an install over a running server. Keep console or out-of-band access available in case the service fails to start.
- Freeze the plan. Confirm the target Percona release, package repository, maintenance window, rollback owner and tested backup location.
- Record state. Save version output, configuration, enabled plugins, users and grants, replication status, GTID variables, binary-log coordinates and disk usage.
- Quiesce writes. Stop application workers or place the application in maintenance mode. Verify that no background job can reconnect and write during the backup or package change.
- Take the final backup. Complete the backup and, where practical, verify its files before proceeding.
- Stop MySQL cleanly. Use the service manager, then confirm that no database process still owns the data directory or port.
- Preserve the old packages and configuration. Keep a copy of the package versions, repository settings and original configuration. Do not delete the old data directory as part of cleanup.
- Install the Percona packages. Enable the selected Percona repository and install the matching server packages for the operating system.
- Review configuration compatibility. Remove obsolete variables, check plugin paths and confirm that file permissions and paths still match the new package layout.
- Run required metadata upgrades. Follow the target release guide. Some releases perform system-table work automatically; others require a manual upgrade command. Legacy procedures mention running
mysql_upgradewhen the installer does not do so, but the current release instructions take precedence. - Start Percona and inspect logs. Resolve permission, unknown-variable, plugin and storage-engine errors before allowing clients to reconnect.
- Check replication and GTID state. Confirm source and replica coordinates, executed and purged GTID sets, channel configuration and replica lag.
- Run application smoke checks. Test login, reads, writes, transactions, background jobs, reports and the most important queries from the real application.
- Re-enable traffic gradually. Keep the original rollback path until monitoring shows stable errors, latency, replication and backup behavior.
If the new server cannot start, stop and preserve the evidence: error logs, package versions, configuration diff and status output. Do not repeatedly alter the data directory while guessing. Restore the original packages or switch traffic to the maintained fallback according to the rollback plan, then investigate on a copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMigrate logically to a fresh server
Export the source deliberately
Choose whether the application can tolerate a read-only period or whether you need replication-based synchronization. For a simple maintenance window, quiesce writes, create a consistent export and capture the final source position. Include application schemas and programmable objects; handle accounts and grants as a separate, reviewed step.

When gtid_mode=ON, Percona’s 9.7 upgrade guidance warns that a dump containing the mysql system database must not be loaded. Exclude that database from the application-data import and recreate users and grants using the target release’s supported procedures. Importing system tables from another version can overwrite authentication and metadata in ways the target server cannot use.
Prepare and restore the target
- Install and start the target Percona release on the prepared host.
- Apply network, TLS, resource and logging settings appropriate to the target, not a blind copy of the source file.
- Create the target administrative account and empty application databases with the intended character sets and collations.
- Load the schema and data in dependency order. Restore routines, triggers and events after the base tables where the dump format requires it.
- Recreate users and grants, then test each application connection with the exact connector and credentials.
- Run consistency checks, row-count comparisons for critical tables, representative queries and application tests.
Synchronize the final changes
If the source continues accepting writes while the bulk copy runs, use a documented replication or change-capture design. Confirm GTID and binary-log retention requirements on both sides before starting. A copied data set without a known final position is not a zero-data-loss cutover plan. If you cannot prove synchronization, schedule a write freeze and perform a final export instead.
Cut over and retain the source
- Stop or drain application writers and wait for the final changes to reach the target.
- Verify the target’s replication or import position and run final integrity checks.
- Change the application endpoint, service discovery record or connection pool to the Percona host.
- Monitor errors, transactions, latency, deadlocks, replication and background jobs.
- Keep the source server stopped or read-only and available for rollback until the agreed acceptance period ends.
Validate behavior after the switch
Compatibility claims do not replace workload testing. Use a checklist that exercises the paths most likely to expose a difference:
- Authentication for every service, administrator and reporting user.
- Reads and writes under the application’s normal isolation level, including rollback and deadlock handling.
- Prepared statements, bulk inserts, connection pooling and reconnect behavior.
- Character-set conversion, sorting and collation-sensitive queries.
- Stored procedures, triggers, scheduled events, generated columns and partition maintenance.
- Backups, restores, binary-log shipping, replication failover and monitoring alerts.
- Performance-sensitive queries using production-like data volume; do not assume a speed improvement without measuring your workload.
Compare error logs and metrics with the source baseline. Pay particular attention to unknown configuration variables, authentication failures, disabled plugins, changed SQL modes, replication errors and disk growth. Re-run the restore procedure on the new release before declaring the migration complete.
Common failure modes and recovery
The package manager selects the wrong major version
Inspect enabled repositories and package policies, disable repositories for other Percona series, then install the explicitly selected target series. Never continue a migration with an unintended major version simply because installation succeeded.
Best Value
Percona will not start after an in-place change
Read the service status and error log first. Unknown variables, missing plugins, wrong ownership, an occupied port, incompatible redo or undo files and an incorrect data-directory path are common causes. Restore the original package and configuration or switch to the fallback host; investigate the failed start using a copy of the data.
Authentication fails although the password is correct
Check the account’s host part, authentication plugin, TLS requirement and connector support. Recreate or alter the account using the target release’s supported method rather than copying system tables from the old server.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Replication stops after cutover
Compare GTID mode, executed and purged sets, server identifiers, binary-log format, channel credentials and TLS settings. Do not reset GTIDs or skip transactions until you understand whether the missing transaction represents real data loss.
The restore runs out of space or takes too long
Check free space for the data directory, temporary files, binary logs and staging copy. Restore to storage with adequate headroom, use the backup format’s parallel or compressed options where supported, and base the maintenance window on a timed restore test.
When to use professional migration help
Percona says its MySQL experts can assist with zero-downtime migration and provide Day 2 operational support. That can be useful when the topology includes multiple replicas, GTID-based failover, strict uptime requirements or a large version jump. Even with outside help, require a written rollback plan, restore evidence, acceptance tests and ownership of the final configuration.
Recommended decision
For a new deployment, install an active Percona 8.4.x or 9.7 LTS release supported by your exact 64-bit platform, using Percona’s repository and a tested configuration. For an existing MySQL service, choose a fresh logical migration when you can provision parallel capacity and want the cleanest rollback and validation boundary. Choose an in-place replacement only when the data directory, version path and configuration have been verified and the shorter operational window outweighs the coupling to the existing host. In both cases, the backup restore test and application smoke checks are the gates for production cutover.
