For a PHAR installation, change Composer with composer self-update <version> or php composer.phar self-update <version>. Use --1 or --2 to select a stable major-version channel. If your distribution installed Composer as a system package, self-update is unavailable; use the package manager or install separate PHAR binaries instead.

Choose the installation method before changing anything
Composer can be present on Linux in two fundamentally different forms:

- PHAR installation: a self-contained Composer archive invoked as
composerorphp composer.phar. This installation supportsself-update. - Distribution package: a file managed by your operating system’s package manager. The package manager owns upgrades and downgrades, so Composer’s self-update command is not available for that copy.
There is also a choice between replacing one binary and keeping several versions next to one another. Use the following decision guide:

Check the current binary and PHP runtime
Run these commands from the same shell and account that will run Composer:

command -v composer
composer --version
php -vIf the command is a local PHAR, use its actual path:
php composer.phar --version
php composer.phar self-update --2command -v reveals which executable your shell resolves first. This matters when a system package, a global PHAR, and a project-local binary all exist. A successful version change on one path does not change another binary elsewhere on PATH.

Check PHP before selecting Composer. The Composer README lists these compatibility ranges:

The ranges overlap. Therefore, a machine running PHP 7.2.5 through 8.1 may qualify for both lines; choose the line your application and deployment process support. An older interpreter outside the current line’s requirement should not be “fixed” by changing a project’s PHP setting: Composer itself still runs under the PHP executable that launches it.
Change a PHAR installation to an exact Composer release
The exact-release form is the most deterministic way to select a version. For a command named composer, run:
composer self-update 2.4.0-RC1For a downloaded archive, run the same operation through PHP:

php composer.phar self-update 2.4.0-RC1The release string in these examples is intentionally exact, including the -RC1 suffix. Use the complete release identifier you intend to run; an exact version is preferable when deployment or a team process must be reproducible.

After the command completes, verify the result:
composer --version

php composer.phar --versionIf you changed a system-wide PHAR, the file may be owned by root. Composer’s CLI documentation notes that a system-wide update may require:
sudo -H composer self-update 2.4.0-RC1The -H option gives the command root’s home directory while it runs. Do not use elevated privileges for a user-owned Composer unless the target file actually requires them; keeping the archive owned by the account that updates it is simpler and safer.
Select a stable major-version channel
When you want the stable 1.x or 2.x channel rather than one named release, use:
composer self-update --1
composer self-update --2The equivalent local-PHAR syntax is:
php composer.phar self-update --1
php composer.phar self-update --2A channel selection is not an immutable pin. It asks Composer to move to the appropriate stable release in that major line, so a later invocation can select a newer release. Use an exact release when a build must remain unchanged, and use --1 or --2 when following a major line is the intended policy.
Composer’s command-line documentation gives php composer.phar self-update 2.4.0-RC1 as the pattern for selecting a specific release. A release candidate is an example of the syntax, not a recommendation to use a pre-release in production.
Install Composer 2.2 on an older PHP server
First establish the PHP version in the server’s CLI environment:
php -vThe PHP used by a web server can differ from the PHP used by the shell. Composer uses the CLI interpreter shown by php -v, so changing a web-server module alone does not change the runtime that executes Composer.

If the machine already has a compatible PHAR, select the 2.x channel or an exact 2.2 release using self-update. For a server that must stay on the 2.2 LTS line, use an exact 2.2 release after confirming that release’s requirements, rather than relying indefinitely on a moving channel.
If the existing command is a distribution package, do not expect composer self-update to replace it. Either downgrade or install the package version offered by the distribution, or install a PHAR under a different filename and call that binary explicitly. This avoids modifying files managed by the package database.
Remember that a project’s require constraint for PHP and Composer’s own PHP requirement are separate checks. Selecting Composer 2.2 does not change the server’s PHP interpreter, extensions, or the PHP version declared by an application.
Install two Composer versions side by side
Parallel binaries are useful when one application still needs the 1.x line while another uses 2.x, or when a migration must be tested without disturbing an existing deployment. The official installer accepts --install-dir and --filename:

/usr/local/bin/composer2 self-update --2
/usr/local/bin/composer1 self-update --1For exact reproducibility, replace the channel operation with the exact release you have approved:
/usr/local/bin/composer2 self-update 2.4.0-RC1Use the full path in scripts, deployment jobs, and service definitions. If you prefer short commands for interactive work, create shell aliases, but do not assume that changing an alias changes a non-interactive job. Verify each executable independently:

/usr/local/bin/composer2 --versionThe installer options solve naming and placement; they do not make two binaries interchangeable. Each project should document which command it expects.
Use a verified installer for a clean PHAR installation
When the current Composer copy is package-managed, damaged, or difficult to identify, a fresh PHAR installation is often cleaner than trying to force self-update. The official programmatic-install procedure uses a SHA-384 checksum.
Download the expected signature from https://composer.github.io/installer.sig and the installer from https://getcomposer.org/installer. The following PHP script follows that order and stops before execution if the checksum differs:

unlink('composer-setup.php');Run it from a directory where the account can create and remove files. Once the installer has produced a PHAR, move or install it with the desired filename and directory. A system-wide location such as /usr/local/bin normally requires administrator rights; a user-local directory avoids that requirement if it is on PATH.
The installer FAQ also documents pinning an exact installer copy to a Git commit from the Composer installer repository. Pinning the installer revision can make an automated bootstrap process reproducible; still verify the downloaded installer before executing it.
Permissions, backups, and rollback safety
Composer can keep backup and data directories while updating itself. The command-line documentation warns that these locations must be writable only by the owning user. An unsafe directory could allow a planted file to be installed during a rollback operation.
- For a user installation, keep the PHAR, its backup directory, and its data directory owned by that user.
- For a root-owned system installation, update it deliberately with
sudo -Hand inspect ownership afterward. - Do not make Composer’s data or backup directories world-writable merely to bypass a permission error.
- Before replacing a system binary, record its path and version so you can identify the file that changed.
If an update fails part way through, first check the binary’s version and location. A backup may permit Composer’s own rollback, but rollback depends on correct ownership and permissions. If those directories are writable by other users, fix ownership before attempting another update.
Validate the selected version in the project
A version string alone does not prove that the application can run with the new Composer. Use this sequence after every change:
- Record the executable and release:
command -v composerfollowed bycomposer --version. For a local archive, recordphp composer.phar --version. - Run the project’s normal installation command, usually
composer install, from the application directory. - When platform compatibility is in question, run
composer check-platform-reqs. This checks the real PHP interpreter and installed extensions against the requirements of the installed packages. - Exercise application scripts, plugins, and any Composer event handlers used by the project.
- Inspect deployment jobs and service definitions to ensure they call the intended binary name, especially when
composer1andcomposer2coexist.
Changing Composer does not itself change the PHP executable, extensions, or operating-system libraries. A platform failure after the switch may therefore require a PHP or extension change rather than another Composer downgrade.

The command says that self-update is unavailable
This usually indicates a distribution-managed installation. Confirm the path with command -v composer and identify how the package was installed. Update or downgrade it with the operating system’s package tooling, or install a separate PHAR under a new filename. Do not overwrite a package-managed file manually if the package database is expected to maintain it.
The shell cannot find Composer
Use command -v composer and inspect PATH. If the executable was installed as composer2, invoke that exact name. For a file in the current directory, use php composer.phar rather than assuming a global command exists.
The update reports a PHP requirement problem
Run php -v and compare the result with the published compatibility lines. Select a Composer release compatible with that interpreter, or upgrade PHP through the server’s normal process. Composer cannot make an unsupported PHP runtime satisfy a release requirement.
The command returns permission denied
Determine whether the target is user-owned or system-wide. Use a user-owned installation without sudo; for a root-owned system PHAR, use sudo -H composer self-update .... Then check ownership of Composer’s data and backup directories rather than granting broad write permissions.

There may be multiple binaries or a cached shell command. Run the executable by its absolute path and check its version. In a new shell, repeat command -v composer. Update scripts and deployment configuration to use the selected path explicitly.
A channel update is too unpredictable
--1 and --2 select major channels, not permanent pins. Use an exact release argument and record that version in the deployment configuration when repeatability matters.

A repeatable change procedure
For a production server or a team-managed workstation, use this compact runbook:
- Identify the current executable with
command -v composerand recordcomposer --version. - Record
php -v; decide whether the current latest line, Composer 2.2 LTS, or another approved release fits that runtime. - Classify the installation as PHAR or distribution package.
- Choose an exact release for a fixed build, a major channel for controlled tracking, or a second filename for side-by-side use.
- Apply the change with the appropriate command and privilege level.
- Verify the resulting binary by absolute path and version.
- Run
composer install, thencomposer check-platform-reqswhen platform requirements need confirmation. - Test scripts and plugins, and update every automated caller to the intended executable.
- Keep ownership of Composer’s data and backup directories restricted to the owning account.
This process separates four issues that are often confused: which file the shell executes, which Composer release that file contains, which PHP runtime executes it, and which PHP and extension requirements the application declares.
