To install a custom Minecraft: Java Edition server JAR, stop the server, back up its world and settings, upload the correct server software to the server directory, and configure the startup command or hosting panel to use the file’s exact name. Then run it with the Java version required by that software, complete the first-launch EULA step, and verify the log before allowing players to connect.

This process works for vanilla, Paper, Fabric, and other Java Edition server software, but the files and compatibility rules differ. A Paper JAR is not a Fabric installation, and a Fabric installation may include a launcher, a vanilla server JAR, libraries, and properties files rather than one self-contained file.

What “custom server JAR” means
A server JAR is the Java program that runs a Minecraft server. “Custom” normally means replacing the default vanilla server program with another server implementation or loader, such as Paper for plugin-focused servers or Fabric for modded servers. It can also mean using a differently named vanilla JAR, a specific build for a particular Minecraft release, or a launcher supplied by a project.
The filename itself is not the important part. The startup command or panel must point to the file that is actually present in the server directory. If the file is named paper-1.21.10-123.jar, a command that still references paper.jar will fail unless you rename the file or change the command.

The instructions below are for Minecraft: Java Edition. Mojang states that a compatible Java Runtime Environment is required to launch the server JAR. If people outside the machine or local network must connect, firewall and, where applicable, router port-forwarding settings are separate networking tasks that must also be configured.
Check these details before changing anything
Write down the target configuration before downloading a file. This prevents a common mistake: installing software for one Minecraft release while the world, plugins, or mods were created for another.
- Minecraft version: Record the exact release the server should run, including whether it is an older or newer point release.
- Server software: Decide whether the target is vanilla, Paper, Fabric, or another loader.
- Extensions: List the plugins or mods that must load. Plugins and mods are not interchangeable.
- Java requirement: Check the software project’s compatibility table before starting the server.
- Host rules: Confirm whether the panel allows a custom JAR, requires a particular filename, or provides a separate server-type selector.
- Access method: Have the panel file manager, upload tool, or SFTP access ready. For a local server, identify the directory containing the current startup script and world.
Do not delete the existing installation while experimenting. A backup gives you a way back if the new software cannot read the world or an extension is incompatible.

These choices are not interchangeable. Select the software that matches the world and the extensions you intend to use, not simply the one with the shortest command.
Install a custom JAR on a local or self-managed server
1. Back up the complete installation
Stop making changes while the server is running and copy the world directories, configuration files, extension directories, and startup script or panel settings. Include any loader-specific files and libraries. A useful backup is one you can restore as a complete directory, not just a copy of the main JAR.
2. Stop the server cleanly
Use the panel’s Stop control or issue the server’s normal stop command in the console. Wait until the process has exited and the console is no longer writing saves. Paper specifically warns that replacing a JAR in a running server is unsafe. Never overwrite the program while Java still has it open.

3. Download software for the exact Minecraft version
Get the file from the project that publishes the software. Mojang provides the official Java Edition server download, Paper publishes runnable server JARs, and Fabric provides an executable server launcher. Check the release and loader versions shown by the download page before saving the file.
Do not assume that a newer JAR will safely upgrade an existing world. World format changes, plugin APIs, and mod dependencies can all make a version change an operational migration rather than a simple replacement.
4. Put the file in the server directory
For a local installation, copy the downloaded file into the directory that contains the world and the current startup script. For a remote machine, use the host’s file manager, upload control, or SFTP. Keep the original file until the replacement has been tested; you can move it to a backup location if the panel requires only one active server JAR.
Fabric’s launcher documentation describes placing the launcher in a local or remote server directory. A manual Fabric installation is different: the launcher expects a vanilla server.jar and creates supporting files. In that case, treat the launcher, vanilla JAR, libraries directory, and server.properties as one coordinated installation.

5. Set the exact filename
Choose one of these approaches:
- Keep the downloaded name and change the startup command to that exact name.
- Rename the file to the name already used by the script or panel, then verify that the extension remains
.jar. - In a panel, select its custom-JAR option and enter or select the exact uploaded filename.
Names are commonly case-sensitive on Linux servers. A command referring to Paper.jar will not necessarily find paper.jar. Avoid relying on a graphical label that differs from the real filename shown in the file list.
6. Run it with the required Java version
Use the Java runtime documented by the project. The following are the official-style examples supplied by the projects; replace the placeholder or example filename with the file you actually installed.

For a Fabric launcher:

java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --noguiIf your Paper download has a different filename, substitute that exact name. The memory values in these examples are command-line examples, not a universal allocation rule; a host panel may expose the same settings in separate memory fields.
Run the command from the server directory, or use an absolute path to the JAR. If several Java installations exist, make sure the java executable in the script is the one whose version satisfies the software’s table.

On a first run, the server creates setup files and stops or refuses to continue until the EULA requirement has been completed. Follow the EULA instructions generated by the official setup process, then start the server again. Do not treat a process that exits after creating setup files as a successful startup.
8. Validate before inviting players
Watch the console from the first complete start. Confirm all of the following:
- The process stays running instead of exiting with a Java or file error.
- The expected Minecraft version is shown in the startup log.
- The intended world opens and its normal dimensions and data are present.
- Required plugins or mods load without dependency errors.
- A local client can connect and perform basic actions.
Only after the local test succeeds should you address outside access. Check the server bind and address, host firewall, and router port forwarding where players connect over the internet. Mojang notes that outside connections may require firewall or port-forwarding configuration.
Change the JAR in a hosting panel
Panel names vary, but the safe sequence is consistent. Do not upload a new file and press Start while the old process is still running.

- Open the server console and choose Stop. Wait for the process to finish.
- Open the panel’s file manager or upload area and make a backup of the world and configuration directories.
- Upload the custom JAR to the server’s main directory. If the panel has a dedicated server-type or custom-JAR selector, leave the file in the directory specified by that panel.
- Open Startup, Server type, or the equivalent settings page.
- Select Custom JAR or the panel’s equivalent option. Enter or choose the uploaded filename exactly, including capitalization and the
.jarextension. - Set the Java version exposed by the panel to the requirement for the selected software. For Fabric, use Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17–1.20.4 or Java 21 for 1.20.5 and newer. For Paper, use Java 21 for 1.20–1.21.11 or Java 25 for 26.1 and newer.
- Review the generated startup command. It must point to the same filename you saw in the file manager and must start in the directory containing that file.
- Start the server, monitor the live log, and complete the EULA step if this installation has not done so already.
Some panels replace the command automatically when you choose a server type; others expose a text field. In either case, the final command is the authority. If it references an old filename, correct the setting before restarting.

Simple launcher method
Fabric’s simple method downloads an executable server launcher with the selected Minecraft and loader versions built into it. Place that launcher in the server directory and run it with the required Java version, for example:
java -Xmx2G -jar <fabric server launcher jar file name> noguiFabric documents that its launcher can act as a drop-in replacement for a vanilla server JAR when used with supported Minecraft hosts, administration panels, or start scripts. The panel still has to invoke the actual launcher filename.

Manual Fabric setup expects a vanilla server.jar and creates or uses additional support files. A remote upload may therefore need all of these items:
- The Fabric server launcher.
- The vanilla
server.jarexpected by the launcher. - The generated or supplied
server.properties. - The
librariesdirectory and its contents.
Do not rename one file, remove the libraries directory, and assume the installation is complete. Upload the coordinated file set produced by the Fabric installation process, then use the launcher’s filename in the startup command.
Fabric Java selection
Use Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17 through 1.20.4 and Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and later, according to Fabric’s documented recommendations. If the host offers several Java images, select the one matching the Minecraft version before diagnosing any mod problem.
Paper installation and migration details
Replacing vanilla with Paper
Paper’s migration guidance is to download the appropriate Paper build and replace the vanilla server JAR. You can either retain Paper’s downloaded filename and change the command or rename it to the name already used by your script. Paper’s short launch example is:
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --noguiReplace paper.jar in that example when the downloaded file has another name.
Paper’s Java table
Paper lists Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21.11 and Java 25 for Minecraft 26.1 and newer. A Java mismatch can prevent the server from starting even when the JAR upload and filename are correct.
World compatibility warning
Paper cannot load Fabric or Forge worlds when those systems have added blocks, items, or other game data that Paper does not understand. If the existing world depends on such content, keep the backup and use the original loader rather than attempting a Paper migration. A successful JAR launch does not prove that the world is compatible.

Safe updates and rollback
Every future JAR change should follow the same stop-backup-replace-validate sequence. Keep the previous JAR until the new build has completed a full startup and a test connection. Save a fresh copy of the world before an update, especially when changing Minecraft versions or moving between server implementations.

Record the first meaningful error in the log, restore the previous JAR and matching startup setting, and confirm that the backup world opens. If the problem is a Java mismatch, changing only the runtime may be sufficient; if the problem is world data or missing loader files, return to the original software and file set.
For a managed Minecraft hosting plan, verify its custom-JAR policy before purchasing or migrating. Some services expose a custom-JAR field, while others restrict server software choices or require a specific directory. The same technical requirements still apply: exact filename, compatible Java, complete supporting files, backups, and a stopped server during replacement.
