The safe way to install ColorOS on a OnePlus phone is to use an update that OnePlus has officially released for your exact model and region, then install it through the phone’s built-in updater. Do not treat ColorOS as a universal package for every OnePlus device: eligibility, release timing, carrier approval and even the operating system offered can vary by model and country.
Back up important data, keep the phone adequately charged, use a reliable connection and follow the on-screen instructions without interrupting the installation. Manual packages and beta builds are conditional options, not shortcuts around an unavailable official rollout.

Can you update your OnePlus phone to ColorOS?
Sometimes, but only when OnePlus has included your exact phone and region in an official ColorOS release. The available evidence does not establish ColorOS as a universal replacement for OxygenOS across all OnePlus phones.
OnePlus’s ColorOS 17 open-beta notice is specifically for the OnePlus 13 in India. It is a pre-release program, not proof that every OnePlus 13 worldwide—or every other OnePlus model—can install the same build. OnePlus’s US business-adjustment notice says that existing devices within an eligible upgrade scope may voluntarily update to ColorOS after its official release. That statement is conditional; the applicable devices, release timing and instructions must be checked again when OnePlus publishes them.

OnePlus also states that rollout timing can differ by device, country and carrier. A phone that is eligible in one market may receive the update later, receive a different package or remain on OxygenOS in another. The supported-device information on OnePlus’s OxygenOS 16 page likewise describes country, carrier and model variation.
What to verify before downloading anything
- Exact model name and model number, including any regional or carrier variant.
- Current operating-system version and build number.
- Country or region in which the phone is being used and, where relevant, the carrier that sold it.
- An official OnePlus notice that names that model and region.
- Whether the release is stable, an open beta or another pre-release build.
If any of these details do not match, stop. A package for a similar-looking model can be incompatible even when the phone names are close.
Choose the right installation route
For most owners, the phone’s own updater is the safest route. Manual local installation is appropriate only when OnePlus has supplied a package and instructions for the exact device. A beta is suitable only for someone who knowingly accepts pre-release problems.

Prepare the OnePlus phone safely
1. Confirm the software and region
Open the phone’s device-information screen and record the model, current version and build number. Menu labels differ between OxygenOS versions, so use the labels shown on your phone rather than relying on a screenshot from another model. Check OnePlus’s current support information and the update notice for your market before proceeding.
Do not change the phone’s region or use a virtual location to force a package intended for another market. That does not make the device eligible and can complicate support.

2. Back up important data
OnePlus recommends backing up before a software update. The ColorOS 17 open-beta notice repeats that advice even though it says the beta upgrade is designed not to clear data. A backup protects photos, contacts, messages, authentication information and files if an installation fails or a later rollback requires a reset.
Use the backup method you normally trust, then confirm that the backup completed and can be accessed. Do not assume that an update’s “keep data” design is a substitute for a backup.

General OnePlus support advice is to plug in the phone or keep its battery above 60% and use a stable Wi-Fi or mobile network. The OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual recommends Wi-Fi for downloading an update. These are general support thresholds, not a universal requirement for every release.
The OnePlus 13 ColorOS 17 open beta has its own requirements: battery above 30% and at least 4 GB of free storage. Follow the stricter requirement shown in the notice for your particular build. Keep additional space available when possible because the installer may need temporary working room.
4. Remove avoidable interruptions
Finish the update when you can leave the phone undisturbed. Connect it to power if practical, keep the network stable and avoid starting the process immediately before travel or an event where you need the phone. A small amount of warmth during installation can be normal; the manual notes that the device may heat while processing the update.

Install through the built-in updater
The exact menu wording depends on the OxygenOS version and model. OnePlus manuals and support pages show two common paths:
- Settings > About device > version number, where an update check may appear.
- Settings > About device > Official version widget, then the update controls.
- Settings > System & update > Software Update or System Update on other software versions.
Use the path that actually appears on your phone. Do not install a downloaded file merely because a website describes a different menu.
- Open Settings and go to the update screen shown for your software version.
- Let the phone check for an official update. Read the model, region and release information shown in the notice.
- Review the release notes and confirm that the update is intended for this device. If the notice identifies a beta, treat it as pre-release software rather than a normal stable upgrade.
- Connect to Wi-Fi when available, verify the required battery level and make sure the phone has enough free storage.
- Start the download and wait for it to finish. Keep the phone connected and avoid switching networks during a large download.
- When prompted, choose the installation or restart option. The phone may reboot more than once.
- During installation, do not press the Power button, operate the phone or attempt to shut it down. OnePlus’s OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual specifically instructs users to wait for completion without performing other operations.
- After the phone starts again, unlock it and allow background optimization to finish before judging battery life or responsiveness. Check Settings again to confirm the installed version.
Temporary warmth, slower response or increased power use can occur while the phone completes post-update optimization. Persistent problems after that process should be handled through OnePlus support rather than by installing an unrelated package.
When manual local installation is justified
Manual installation is not a general workaround for a missing rollout. Use it only when all of the following are true:
- OnePlus has published the package through an official channel.
- The package is for the exact model and software branch, not merely a similar product name.
- The regional and carrier requirements match your phone.
- The matching OnePlus instructions identify local installation as supported.
- You have completed a backup and can accept the possibility of troubleshooting or service-center assistance.
OnePlus’s OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual describes this path as Settings > About device > Official version widget > menu > Local install. The OnePlus Nord CE4 Lite manual also documents OTA and local-install procedures. Those paths are examples for the software versions covered by those manuals; they should not be assumed to apply unchanged to every OnePlus phone or to a ColorOS build.

How to perform a supported local install
- Obtain the package only from the official OnePlus channel named in the device-specific instructions.
- Check the file name, model designation, region and release notes against your phone. Stop if any identifier differs.
- Complete the backup, battery and storage checks required by that release.
- Open the documented local-install menu. On the OxygenOS 14 path, this is Settings > About device > Official version widget > menu > Local install.
- Select the verified package and read the confirmation screen carefully before accepting.
- Leave the phone alone while it verifies, installs and restarts. Do not disconnect power or press buttons during the installation.
Do not use third-party firmware mirrors, modified packages or a file intended for another OnePlus model to bypass a staged rollout. If the official instructions do not provide a local-install method for your phone, use the built-in updater or wait for OnePlus to publish further guidance.

The cited ColorOS 17 open-beta announcement covers the OnePlus 13 in India and explicitly describes pre-release software. Enrollment is optional and risk-bearing; it is not the ordinary safe route for someone who simply wants a stable update.
Requirements in the cited notice
- OnePlus 13 located in the eligible Indian release scope.
- Important data backed up before enrollment.
- Battery above 30%.
- At least 4 GB of free storage.
Known beta trade-offs
OnePlus warns that some third-party applications may be incompatible. Temporary heating, lag and increased power consumption can occur while background optimization runs. These effects are especially inconvenient if the phone is needed for work, travel, banking or two-factor authentication.
Read the current beta announcement in full before enrolling, including its eligibility, enrollment window, known issues and any stated rollback process. Do not assume that the OnePlus 13 India notice authorizes a beta installation on a phone purchased elsewhere.
What to do when the update is not showing
A missing update normally means that the rollout has not reached your device, market or carrier yet. OnePlus says updates may be delivered in batches and that timing varies by device, country and carrier.
- Recheck the exact model, region and carrier information.
- Open the built-in updater again over a stable connection and read any eligibility message.
- Check OnePlus’s current support page and release notice for your model rather than relying on a post about another phone.
- Wait if the official notice says the rollout is staged or still expanding.
- Contact OnePlus support if the notice says your device is eligible but the update remains unavailable after the stated rollout window.
Do not install an unrelated model’s package, change regional settings to impersonate an eligible market or trust a download that is not published through an official OnePlus channel. Those actions can create a software mismatch and remove the normal support path.
If installation fails
Do not repeatedly force the phone to restart or try random firmware files. OnePlus’s OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual says that if an update fails, users should back up phone data and go to an official service center for help. OnePlus support is the appropriate escalation route when the phone cannot complete the installation or the update leaves it unusable.
Information to have ready for support
- Exact model and regional variant.
- Current software version and build number, if the phone still displays them.
- The update name or version you attempted to install.
- Whether the installation was OTA, an official local install or a beta.
- Any error message and the point at which the process stopped.
- Confirmation that important data was backed up, if accessible.
If the device is warm during a normal installation, let it finish rather than interrupting it. If it remains abnormally hot, repeatedly reboots, will not start or displays an error, stop experimenting and seek official assistance.

A practical decision checklist
- Use OTA: your phone’s updater offers an official release for the exact model and region, and you want the safest ordinary path.
- Use local install: an official OnePlus package and model-specific instructions explicitly support it, and you have verified every identifier.
- Consider beta: the current notice names your exact model and market, and you accept app incompatibility, temporary heat, lag and higher power use.
- Wait or contact support: the update is not offered, the rollout is staged, the region is unclear or the package source cannot be verified.
ColorOS and possible rollback in the United States
OnePlus’s US business-adjustment notice says that users with devices in the eligible upgrade scope may voluntarily move to ColorOS after its official release. It also says that users who update will have an option to roll back to OxygenOS, while the specific rollback versions depend on future official announcements.
This is a conditional, time-sensitive policy statement—not a standing guarantee for every US OnePlus phone. Confirm that your device is in the current eligible scope and read the then-current rollback instructions before changing systems. Never assume that a rollback package for one model can be used on another.
Bottom line for a safe ColorOS installation
Verify eligibility first, back up your data, meet the power and network requirements and use the update offered by the phone itself. Treat manual installation as a device-specific procedure requiring an official package, and treat the OnePlus 13 India ColorOS 17 beta as optional pre-release software with real compatibility and performance risks. If the update is missing or fails, waiting for the correct rollout or contacting OnePlus support is safer than forcing an arbitrary package.
