How to Inspect Elements on an iPhone

Use a Mac’s Safari Web Inspector to inspect a live iPhone webpage, or use Shortcuts for limited JavaScript queries without a computer.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To fully inspect a webpage open on a physical iPhone, use Safari Web Inspector on a Mac: enable Web Inspector in iPhone settings, connect the phone to the Mac, then choose the page from Safari’s Develop menu. If you have no Mac, an iPhone Shortcut can query selected page elements with JavaScript, but it is not a full visual inspector.

How Safari Web Inspector works with an iPhone

The full interactive inspector runs in Safari on macOS while the webpage remains open in Safari on the iPhone. Apple’s developer documentation says, “Web content on iOS and iPadOS is inspectable when you connect the device to your Mac.” You can examine the live page using the Mac’s Web Inspector; ordinary Safari browsing controls on iPhone do not provide the same developer interface.

How do I use Safari Web Inspector with my iPhone?

  1. Enable the setting on iPhone. Open Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced, then turn on Web Inspector. The exact Settings path reflects Apple’s current documentation; labels may shift between operating-system releases.
  2. Connect the iPhone to the Mac. Use a data-capable cable. If the iPhone asks whether to trust the computer, approve the prompt.
  3. Enable developer features on the Mac. In Safari, open Safari > Settings > Advanced and enable Show features for web developers. This exposes Safari’s developer tools and Develop menu.
  4. Open the target page on the iPhone. Navigate to it in Safari on the phone.
  5. Open its inspector from the Mac. In Mac Safari, select Develop, find the connected iPhone, and choose the webpage. A Web Inspector window opens for that page.

Use the inspector window on the Mac to examine the page. If you want to inspect a page on the Mac itself instead, Safari also provides Web Inspector through the Develop menu or the page’s Inspect Element context-menu option.

Can I inspect an iPhone webpage wirelessly?

Yes, after the initial setup. First enable Web Inspector on the iPhone and connect it to the Mac with a cable. Then, in Mac Safari’s Develop menu, open the iPhone’s submenu and choose Connect via Network. Apple also documents connecting through Xcode. This is a later network connection option, not a cable-free first-time setup.

Can I inspect a webpage on my iPhone without a computer?

Not with the full interactive Safari Web Inspector described above. If you only need to retrieve or work with selected page data, Apple Shortcuts offers a limited alternative: the Run JavaScript on Webpage action. It can receive the active Safari webpage through the share sheet and run JavaScript against it.

Use a Shortcut to query selected elements

For example, JavaScript such as document.querySelectorAll("img") can select image elements. A Shortcut can return selected information or modify page content, but it does not open a visual DOM inspector. The action has an execution time limit, and its JavaScript must call the completion handler to return results. Follow Apple’s instructions for adding and configuring the action rather than treating an arbitrary bookmarklet or third-party browser app as an equivalent to Web Inspector.

Which inspection route should you use?

Route What it provides Mac needed? Main limitation
Safari Web Inspector Full developer inspection of a webpage open on the iPhone Yes, for a physical iPhone; a Mac simulator can also be inspected Initial device setup needs a cable and Web Inspector enabled
Shortcuts JavaScript action Queries, retrieves, or modifies selected page content from Safari No Requires a Shortcut and is constrained by its execution limit; it is not a full visual inspector

Choose Web Inspector when you need to investigate the page interactively. Choose Shortcuts when you only need selected page data and do not have a Mac.

Inspect a simulated iPhone page on a Mac

A physical iPhone is not required for every development task. Apple says booted iOS and iPadOS simulators on macOS appear in Safari’s Develop menu and have Web Inspector enabled. A simulator is useful for testing a simulated page; use a physical device as well when real-device layout or behavior matters.
