How to Inspect a Puppeteer Remote Object

Use Puppeteer’s JSHandle methods to inspect values in the page context, retrieve serializable data or CDP metadata, and clean up handles safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use page.evaluateHandle() to keep a JavaScript object in the page context, then inspect it with handle.evaluate(), getProperty(), or getProperties(). Use jsonValue() when you need serializable data, remoteObject() for Chrome DevTools Protocol metadata, and call dispose() when you are done.

Choose the right way to inspect the value

A Puppeteer JSHandle is a reference to a value in the page’s JavaScript context, not a plain object copied into Node.js. Start with the result you need:

Need Use What you get
Keep a page-side object available for more inspection page.evaluateHandle() A JSHandle wrapping the in-page value.
Read a field or calculate a small summary handle.evaluate(fn) The function’s returned value, with the referenced object passed as its first argument.
Get one property as a separately managed handle handle.getProperty(name) A JSHandle for that property.
Enumerate properties as handles handle.getProperties() A map of property names to handles.
Get a serializable representation handle.jsonValue() The serializable portions of the value; it does not call toJSON().
Inspect CDP-level metadata handle.remoteObject() The protocol representation, a Runtime.RemoteObject.
Release the handle’s reference handle.dispose() Releases the referenced object for garbage collection.

These are different inspection routes, not interchangeable ways to copy an entire live object. For ordinary debugging, focused evaluate() calls or property handles are usually more useful than protocol metadata.

Inspect a remote object with JSHandle

This example assumes page is an open Puppeteer Page and that window.someAppState exists in the page. It is an illustrative API pattern, not a claim that it was run in a browser.

const handle = await page.evaluateHandle(() => window.someAppState);

try {
  // Read a focused value while retaining the original page-side object.
  const status = await handle.evaluate(value => value.status);
  console.log('status:', status);

  // Get a property as its own handle, then convert that value if appropriate.
  const userHandle = await handle.getProperty('user');
  try {
    const user = await userHandle.jsonValue();
    console.log('user:', user);
  } finally {
    await userHandle.dispose();
  }

  // Inspect the underlying Chrome DevTools Protocol representation.
  console.log(handle.remoteObject());
} finally {
  await handle.dispose();
}

For a large or complex object, select only the fields you need inside evaluate() rather than assuming a JSON conversion contains every runtime detail.

Read one property or enumerate properties

Get one property

getProperty(name) returns a handle, so convert it to a value if that is what you need and dispose the property handle when finished.

const statusHandle = await handle.getProperty('status');

try {
  console.log(await statusHandle.jsonValue());
} finally {
  await statusHandle.dispose();
  await handle.dispose();
}

Enumerate properties

getProperties() returns a map from property names to handles. Each returned handle has its own lifetime; dispose the handles you use, along with the original handle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
const handle = await page.evaluateHandle(() => window.someAppState);
const properties = await handle.getProperties();

try {
  for (const [name, propertyHandle] of properties) {
    try {
      console.log(name, await propertyHandle.jsonValue());
    } catch (error) {
      console.log(name, 'could not be converted:', error);
    }
  }
} finally {
  await Promise.all([...properties.values()].map(propertyHandle => propertyHandle.dispose()));
  await handle.dispose();
}

Enumeration gives you property handles; it does not guarantee that every value can be represented as ordinary JSON. If you only need selected fields, reading them in one handle.evaluate() call can avoid creating and managing many handles.

Use jsonValue() when a by-value result is enough

jsonValue() returns the serializable portions of a handle’s value. It does not invoke a toJSON() method, and it should not be treated as a full inspection of every live object. Some JavaScript values do not fit JSON’s representation; the CDP Runtime model also includes an unserializableValue field for certain primitives that JSON cannot represent.

Use jsonValue() for data you intend to consume in Node.js. Keep the handle and use evaluate() when you need to inspect or derive information from the page-side object itself.

What remoteObject() returns

handle.remoteObject() exposes the protocol object behind the handle. CDP’s Runtime.RemoteObject can describe properties such as type, subtype, class name, description, object identifier, serialized value, and certain unserializable primitive values. It is metadata about a remote value, not a recursive copy of an arbitrary object.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is useful when debugging the protocol representation or working with CDP concepts. For property descriptors and lower-level inspection, Puppeteer can create a CDP session attached to a page with Page.createCDPSession(); CDP Runtime’s property inspection operation takes a remote object identifier and returns property descriptors. That lower-level route requires working with protocol commands and identifiers, whereas JSHandle methods are simpler for routine application debugging.

Dispose handles and account for navigation

Puppeteer documents that handles keep their referenced objects from being garbage-collected until the handles are disposed. Dispose the original handle and any property handles created during inspection when you no longer need them. A frame navigating away or its parent execution context being destroyed automatically disposes associated handles, so do not expect a handle to remain usable across that context change.

Troubleshooting common inspection problems

  • You see a handle instead of the object’s fields: the handle is a reference, not a copied value. Call evaluate() for a focused result or jsonValue() for serializable data.
  • jsonValue() omits information: it returns serializable portions and does not call toJSON(). Read the needed values with evaluate(), or inspect CDP metadata with remoteObject() when protocol details matter.
  • A property is missing from enumeration: getProperties() provides property handles; it is not a complete serialization of all runtime behavior. Use a targeted page-side expression for the exact value you need.
  • A handle stops working after navigation: navigation away from its frame or destruction of the parent context automatically disposes it. Create a new handle in the current page context.
  • Memory or object lifetime is unclear: dispose handles created by the inspection, including property handles, when finished. Avoid retaining handles longer than needed.

Version notes

The Puppeteer JSHandle API reference showed version 25.12.0 when accessed, while its remoteObject() page showed 25.11.0. The Page API reference cited is on Puppeteer’s main GitHub branch, and the CDP reference is specifically the versioned v8 Runtime reference. Check documentation matching your installed Puppeteer and browser protocol versions if a signature or protocol detail differs.
