Stop using a cord if you see exposed wire, insulation that is cut through or penetrated, a damaged plug or connector, missing or deformed prongs, a loose connection, or unusual heat. Do not keep using it while you decide what to do. Inspect the entire cord from plug to device entry, then replace a detachable extension cord only with one that matches the device and setting. A cord attached to an appliance is a repair issue: follow the manufacturer’s service instructions or use a qualified repair professional.
What to check before inspecting a cord
First, stop the appliance and disconnect the cord if you can do so without touching a damaged or unusually hot area. Grip the plug body rather than pulling on the cord. If the plug or cord is hot, or you cannot safely disconnect it, do not handle the damaged area; use the appropriate power switch or circuit breaker to cut power and get qualified help if needed.

Never flex, tug, or plug in a suspect cord to see whether it still works. A cord can continue to power a device while its insulation or conductors are compromised. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that damaged cords and exposed live wires can present shock and fire hazards, and advises replacing damaged cords or the equipment rather than relying on an inadequate repair.

Before moving an appliance or cord, note how it is connected. Some cords detach at the equipment; others enter the appliance housing and are wired internally. Do not pull on a cord to free it from behind furniture or an appliance, and do not disconnect it by yanking the cable. If reaching the plug would require handling a damaged or hot section, stop and cut power another safe way rather than taking hold of the cord.

How to inspect the full cord
With the cord disconnected and cool, examine it in good light from one end to the other. Follow the cord’s route rather than checking only the section that is easy to see. The U.S. Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) advises inspecting extension cords before use; OSHA’s flexible-cord guidance also identifies wear and damage as hazards requiring attention.
- Inspect the plug. Look at the plug body for cracks, breaks, looseness, or other damage. Check each blade or prong for bending, deformation, missing parts, looseness, or signs that it is damaged. Do not use a plug that no longer fits securely or has a damaged grounding pin.
- Follow the cord jacket along its full length. Look for cuts, cracks, fraying, abrasion, bulges, crushed or flattened sections, and places where the jacket is pinched or stretched. Check areas that pass around furniture, through doorways, or along edges, even if the rest of the cord looks sound.
- Check for exposed conductors or penetrated insulation. Any visible conductor, cut-through insulation, or puncture that may reach the inner wires means the cord should be removed from use. Do not cover the area with tape and return the cord to service.
- Examine both ends and every connector. Look where the cord enters a plug, connector, or appliance. Check for cracking, separation, looseness, or strain damage at these points. A connection that moves unexpectedly or appears to be pulling away from its housing is a reason to stop using the cord.
- Notice unusual heat. ESFI says not to use an extension cord that is hot or damaged. If a cord or plug becomes unusually hot during ordinary use, discontinue use and investigate the device, load, and cord choice before using a replacement.
Damage is not always easy to see while a cord is in place. If you cannot inspect a section because it is trapped beneath furniture, under a rug, or behind an appliance, unplug it safely and move the obstruction rather than assuming the hidden portion is intact.
Make the inspection systematic: start at the plug, move slowly along the cord, then check the connector or appliance entry point. Turn the cord enough to view its full outside surface without sharply bending or stressing it. Pay particular attention to places where it changes direction, passes through a doorway, runs beside an edge, or is repeatedly handled. A defect can be limited to one small section, so an undamaged-looking plug does not establish that the rest of the cord is safe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLook for changes in shape as well as obvious openings. A flattened area, a bulge, a kink that will not relax, a split near an end, or a section that feels unusually stiff may indicate crushing, strain, or aging. Do not squeeze or bend a suspicious spot to test it. Visual inspection is not a guarantee that internal damage is absent; when you cannot tell whether the cord’s integrity is intact, keep it out of service.
What the damage can mean
A scuff on the outer jacket is not automatically the same as a cut that reaches the inner insulation or conductors. But appearance alone may not establish how deep damage goes, and a cord with questionable integrity should not be put back into use simply because it still works.
CPSC consumer guidance cautions against inadequate repairs such as taping damaged insulation. OSHA has discussed superficial versus penetrated jacket damage in limited workplace interpretations, including a September 9, 1997 interpretation corrected April 20, 2009. In that particular workplace context, OSHA’s director wrote: “Repair or replacement of the flexible cord is required when the outer jacket is penetrated or the conductors or their insulation, inside are damaged.” That statement is not a household repair tutorial or permission to patch a cord at home. For a consumer, if you cannot confidently determine that a mark is merely superficial, keep the cord out of service and replace it or seek appropriate service.
Do not use electrical tape as a general fix for cuts, cracks, punctures, or exposed wiring. Tape can conceal the damaged area without restoring the cord’s original insulation or mechanical protection, and it can make the defect harder to notice later. Nor should you splice two sections together or wrap a damaged spot and assume the cord is safe because the device still operates. CPSC’s consumer guidance is to replace damaged cords or the equipment, rather than depend on an inadequate repair.

Common causes include pinching in a door or window, abrasion against rough or sharp edges, fasteners such as staples, crushing beneath furniture, and strain near a plug or connector. Age and repeated bending can also weaken a cord. Damage at an end deserves particular attention because the cord is often bent or pulled there.
A cord may be harmed even when no single incident stands out. Repeatedly dragging it around an edge, compressing it under a chair leg, or pulling it tight can gradually wear or strain the jacket and the connection points. When checking a damaged cord, consider the route that may have caused the problem and change it before installing a replacement. Otherwise, the new cord may be exposed to the same pinch, abrasion, or strain.
Decide whether it is an extension cord or an appliance cord
The replacement path depends on whether the cord detaches from the equipment. A detachable extension cord or cord set can usually be replaced as a complete item, provided the new one is suitable for the load and environment. A cord permanently attached to an appliance is part of the equipment; its connection and replacement method vary by model and construction.
| Cord type | What to do | What determines the right replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Detachable extension cord | Remove the damaged cord from use and replace the cord as a complete unit. Do not splice or tape damaged sections. | Connector and plug configuration, grounding, electrical rating and load capacity, indoor or outdoor suitability, and the device’s instructions. |
| Cord attached to an appliance | Stop using the appliance and check its manufacturer’s service instructions. If the procedure or correct part is uncertain, have a qualified repair professional handle it. | Appliance model and construction, manufacturer-approved service information, correct cord and connection, rating, grounding, and safe reassembly. |
OSHA’s 2014 guidance on replacing electrical cords concerns workplace electrical safety and is not a universal set of household repair steps. Do not infer from workplace material that every attached appliance cord is user-replaceable. If the appliance’s documentation does not clearly authorize a user replacement, do not open the equipment or improvise a connection.
A detachable cord is a complete cord set with its own plug and equipment connector; replacing it does not mean repairing a damaged section. Unplug and retire the damaged set, then use a replacement that meets the device’s requirements. If the appliance has a cord that enters its housing and cannot be unplugged at the equipment, that is not the same kind of replacement. Even if a replacement cord appears to fit the outlet, the internal connection, strain relief, grounding, and reassembly may be model-specific.
When in doubt, identify the appliance by its model number and ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional about the approved path. A product listing or generic “replacement power cord” description does not confirm that the cord is approved for a particular appliance. Do not try to make a nonmatching cord fit by removing a pin, changing a connector, or modifying the appliance.
How to choose a replacement extension cord
A search for a “replacement power cord” is only a starting point. Two cords that look similar may have different connectors, grounding, ratings, or intended environments. Compare the replacement with the appliance’s instructions and the markings on the original cord, where legible.

- Connector and plug configuration: Confirm that both ends match the device and the outlet arrangement specified for it. Do not force a connector or remove a grounding feature to make it fit.
- Grounding: Match the grounding arrangement required by the appliance. If the device requires a grounded cord, do not substitute an ungrounded one.
- Electrical rating and load: Select a cord whose rating and capacity meet or exceed the device’s requirements. Use the appliance label and manufacturer instructions to determine those requirements; do not guess from the cord’s appearance.
- Indoor or outdoor use: Choose a cord marked for the conditions where it will be used. ESFI advises using the correct indoor or outdoor rating. An indoor-only cord is not a substitute for a cord intended for outdoor use.
- Recognized testing-laboratory listing: Where applicable, check for a listing or certification mark from a recognized testing laboratory and confirm that the cord is intended for the purpose. A mark does not compensate for the wrong connector, rating, grounding, or environment.
- Device instructions: Follow the appliance maker’s requirements, including any specified cord type or replacement part. If the correct choice is unclear, ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional before buying.
Do not select a cord solely because its plug fits, its length seems convenient, or its online product title contains the appliance name. Fit and capacity are separate questions: a physically compatible cord can still be unsuitable for the load or conditions.

If the original cord’s markings are readable, they can help you compare the replacement, but they do not override the device maker’s instructions. If the markings are missing or the requirements conflict, do not estimate based on thickness, color, length, or appearance; contact the manufacturer or a qualified professional to identify the correct option.
Think of compatibility as several checks, not one. First confirm the appliance can connect to the cord without force. Then confirm the grounding arrangement, rating and load capacity, and intended indoor or outdoor setting. Finally, check whether the device instructions specify a particular cord or replacement part and whether a recognized testing-laboratory listing is applicable. A cord that passes only the connector check is not necessarily suitable.
Outdoor use needs a cord specifically marked for that environment; an indoor cord does not become suitable merely because the weather is dry at the moment. ESFI recommends replacing damaged outdoor extension cords immediately. Do not retain a damaged outdoor cord for occasional use or reserve it for a lighter device: damage to the cord itself is the reason to remove it.
Replacing a detachable extension cord
- Identify the device’s requirements. Read its label and instructions for the required electrical rating, grounding, and any cord restrictions. If the requirements are not clear, contact the manufacturer rather than estimating.
- Confirm the environment and intended use. Decide whether the cord will be used indoors or outdoors, and choose one explicitly rated for that setting. Extension cords are for temporary use, not permanent wiring, according to ESFI consumer guidance.
- Compare the complete cord. Check the plug, connector, grounding, rating, capacity, and testing-laboratory mark where applicable. Do not rely on a generic product description as proof of compatibility.
- Retire the damaged cord. Keep it disconnected and do not put it back into use or pass it on as a usable cord. ESFI advises immediately replacing damaged outdoor extension cords.
- Use the replacement as directed. Connect it only to equipment and an outlet arrangement for which it is suitable. Keep it visible and protected from pinching, sharp edges, crushing, and other sources of damage.
- Stop if anything seems wrong. If the new cord does not fit correctly, the appliance instructions conflict with the cord markings, or a cord or plug becomes unusually hot in use, disconnect safely and seek qualified advice instead of modifying the cord or device.
Replacing a detachable cord does not call for opening the appliance or altering either end of the new cord. If it will not connect as intended, stop and recheck the model requirements rather than forcing it or using an adapter to work around a mismatch. Once connected, route it so people will not step on it and it will not be trapped under a door, rug, furniture, or appliance. Follow the device’s instructions for use and do not leave an extension cord serving as permanent wiring.
Discard or otherwise retire the damaged cord so it is not mistaken for a usable one later. Do not pass it to someone else as an operational cord, leave it available in a shared storage area, or keep it as a backup. The same stop-use decision applies even if the damage is limited to a short section or the cord has not yet failed to power the device.
If the cord is attached to an appliance
Do not treat a permanently attached cord as a detachable extension cord. The cord may connect inside the appliance in a way that requires model-specific parts, strain relief, grounding, and reassembly. An incorrect repair can leave the equipment unsafe even if it powers on.

Find the appliance’s model number and consult its manual or manufacturer service information for the approved repair path. If the manufacturer does not describe a user-level replacement, or if the repair requires opening the equipment or handling internal wiring, use a qualified repair professional. Do not cut the cord, splice in another one, or substitute a cord based only on a matching plug.
Do not assume that the availability of a replacement cord means it is intended for consumer installation. The required procedure depends on the appliance’s construction and the manufacturer’s service instructions. A safe repair must address more than whether the appliance turns on: the cord and its connection must be appropriate for the equipment and properly secured and reassembled. If you are uncertain about any part of that work, leave it to qualified service.

Why workplace OSHA rules are not home repair instructions
OSHA’s electrical rules apply to covered workplaces, not as a general consumer repair code. Under 29 CFR 1910.334(a)(2)(ii), workplace equipment with damage that might expose an employee to injury must be removed from service until repairs and tests necessary to make it safe have been completed. The rule describes an employer’s workplace duty; it does not tell a homeowner how to repair a cord or authorize a do-it-yourself repair.
OSHA’s flexible-cord interpretations likewise address specific workplace cases. Their distinctions about superficial jacket damage do not override CPSC’s consumer caution against inadequate tape repairs. For household use, the safe decision is to stop using a cord when damage is visible or its integrity is uncertain, then replace a detachable cord or obtain appropriate appliance service.
OSHA’s inspection and removal-from-service requirements are tied to the work contexts covered by those standards. They should not be treated as consumer law or as step-by-step instructions for household wiring. In a workplace, equipment removed because of a defect cannot simply be returned to service on the basis of a visual cover-up; the relevant repair and testing requirements apply. At home, use the practical consumer rule: do not operate visibly damaged or questionable cords, and do not attempt a repair beyond the manufacturer’s instructions and your qualifications.
Prevent cord damage
- Keep cords out from under rugs and furniture, where wear or heat can go unnoticed and furniture can crush them.
- Route cords away from sharp edges, doorways, windows, and locations where they can be pinched or abraded.
- Do not pull an appliance by its cord. Handle the plug body when disconnecting it.
- Do not use staples or other fasteners that can puncture or crush a cord.
- Use an extension cord only temporarily and only when its rating and indoor or outdoor marking suit the device and location.
- Inspect cords before use and stop using one that is damaged or hot; replace a damaged outdoor extension cord promptly.
Choose a route that does not leave the cord stretched tight or exposed to repeated bending at the plug or equipment connector. Keep it away from places where doors and windows close on it, and do not secure it with a fastener that could pierce or crush the jacket. When arranging furniture or moving an appliance, check that the cord is not trapped or pressed against a sharp edge.

Use an extension cord as a temporary connection rather than a substitute for permanent wiring. Before each use, take a moment to check the cord and plug, confirm the setting matches its indoor or outdoor marking, and make sure its capacity meets the device’s needs. A damaged cord should be removed from use even if it has worked before or appears to function normally.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wrap electrical tape around a damaged power cord?
Do not use tape as a universal repair or return a cord with damaged insulation to service after covering it. CPSC cautions consumers against inadequate repairs such as taping damaged insulation. Replace a damaged detachable cord, or seek appropriate service for a cord attached to an appliance.
Is a small scuff on a cord dangerous?
A superficial mark is not necessarily the same as insulation that has been cut through, but appearance alone may not show how deep the damage goes. Do not bend or probe it to test it. If you cannot confidently tell that the jacket is intact, keep the cord out of use and replace it or get appropriate service.
Can I replace a cord attached to an appliance myself?
Only follow a user-level replacement procedure if the appliance manufacturer clearly provides one for that model. Attached cords may require model-specific parts, connections, grounding, strain relief, and safe reassembly. If the procedure is unclear or involves internal wiring, use a qualified repair professional.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What should I do if a cord or plug feels unusually hot?
Stop using the cord. Do not handle a hot or damaged area; disconnect it only if you can do so safely, or cut power another appropriate way and get help if needed. Check the device requirements and cord choice before using a replacement. ESFI advises not using an extension cord that is hot or damaged.
Can I keep using a cord if the appliance still works?
No. A cord may continue to power a device while its insulation or conductors are compromised. Remove damaged or questionable cords from use rather than testing them by plugging them in or continuing to operate the appliance.
Does OSHA tell homeowners how to repair a power cord?
No. OSHA’s flexible-cord rules and interpretations address covered workplace contexts, including employer duties to remove damaged equipment from service and meet applicable repair and testing requirements. They are not a household repair tutorial. For home use, replace a damaged detachable cord or follow manufacturer service instructions for an attached appliance cord.
How do I know which extension cord replacement to buy?
Compare the plug and connector configuration, grounding, electrical rating and load capacity, indoor or outdoor marking, any applicable recognized testing-laboratory listing, and the device’s instructions. A cord that fits physically may still be wrong for the load or setting. Ask the manufacturer or a qualified professional if requirements are unclear.
The Bottom Line
Inspect from plug to device entry and stop using any cord that is damaged, unusually hot, or of uncertain integrity. Replace a detachable extension cord only with one that matches the device’s connector, grounding, rating, load, and setting. For an appliance cord attached to the equipment, follow model-specific manufacturer instructions or use a qualified repair professional—never rely on tape, a splice, or a cord that merely seems to fit.
