A shiny classic car can conceal serious corrosion, filler, accident repairs, or water damage. Inspect it dry in natural light, follow a deliberate top-to-bottom sequence, and treat structural metal, suspension mounts, and inaccessible cavities as higher priorities than cosmetic paint. If you cannot safely and confidently assess those areas, make a professional inspection on a lift a condition of purchase.

Why a clean-looking classic can still be a poor buy
Rust is not limited to visible red-brown patches. Moisture can attack folded seams, box sections, inner sills and floor joints from the inside. A previous owner may then cover the evidence with filler, paint or a thick coating. A straight, glossy exterior therefore establishes only that the visible finish looks good at that moment; it does not establish the condition of the metal beneath it.
Classic cars also have model-specific construction and factory tolerances. A slightly uneven panel gap may be normal on one model and evidence of a replacement panel on another. Learn the exact year, body style, known corrosion points and expected panel joins before viewing a car. Detailed model references and advice from marque clubs can help you distinguish an original feature from a repair.

Use the inspection to classify findings, not to produce an arbitrary pass/fail score. Surface rust on a removable bracket is a different problem from perforation at a sill, floor or suspension mounting point. The latter can affect safety, restoration scope and value and deserves specialist assessment.
Prepare before you inspect
Research the particular model
Read model-specific restoration or originality guidance before meeting the seller. Note where the model commonly rusts, how its seams and joins should look, which panels are difficult to replace, and whether the suspension uses strut towers or other load-bearing mounts. This context prevents you from condemning a normal factory irregularity or overlooking a known weak point.
Arrange the right conditions
- View the vehicle outdoors or in a bright space with natural light, and ask to see it dry. Water can hide dull paint, bubbling and waviness.
- Bring a small flashlight, clean gloves, a notepad or camera, and clothing suitable for kneeling. An illuminated inspection borescope is useful only when a cavity has a suitable access hole.
- Ask the seller not to wash or apply fresh underseal immediately before the appointment. Damp mud and recently applied coatings can obscure evidence.
- Plan enough time for the body, cabin, underside and documentation. A quick walk-around is not a structural inspection.
Set a safety boundary
Never reach beneath a car supported only by a jack. If the underside must be examined, use a professional lift or properly rated stands on a stable surface, with the wheels chocked and the lifting points appropriate for that model. If the seller cannot provide safe access, arrange an independent shop inspection rather than improvising.

Follow this inspection sequence
1. Start with a dry, wide-angle walk-around
Walk around the car before touching it. Look at its stance, the straightness of the body and the relationship between adjacent panels. Photograph the car as found, including any dirt, wetness or fresh coating, so later claims about changes are easier to evaluate.
View each side at a shallow angle in natural light. Reflections should flow consistently along a sound panel. Ripples, waviness, bulges, dull patches or a sudden change in reflection can indicate filler or a repaired panel. These signs call for closer inspection; they do not, by themselves, prove a collision or establish that a repair is unsafe.
2. Check opening-panel gaps and operation
Compare the gaps around doors, bonnet, boot and other opening panels. Check whether each panel sits flush, opens without lifting or dropping, and closes consistently against its latch. An altered panel line, a tapering gap or a door that must be slammed can result from accident damage, corrosion at a mounting point or simple adjustment. Classic cars may have uneven factory tolerances, so compare what you see with photographs or measurements for that model rather than applying modern-car perfection as a rule.

3. Examine paint, seams and folded edges
Look closely at wheel-arch lips, door bottoms, the edges of bonnet and boot panels, visible seams and the windscreen scuttle. Bubbles or lifting paint often mark corrosion developing beneath the finish. Run a gloved hand along accessible folded edges; a swelling, soft spot or jagged transition deserves further investigation.
Inspect for overspray on wheel arches, tyres, exhaust and suspension components, window rubbers, wiring, labels or other parts that would normally have been masked. Overspray can indicate a repaint, but it is not proof of poor workmanship. Combine it with paint colour differences, masking lines, filler or altered gaps to decide whether a specialist should examine the repair.
Compare paint on adjacent panels in the same light. A mismatch may reflect a previous repair, ageing or a later replacement panel. Fresh paint can temporarily hide rust, especially when filler has been used, so do not treat a uniform finish as evidence that corrosion has been removed.
4. Inspect wheel arches and the ends of the sills
Wheel arches collect water, road salt and grit. Look at the outer lip, the inner arch, the area behind the wheel and the point where the sill meets the arch. Pay particular attention to seams and folded metal rather than only broad, flat surfaces.
The front and rear ends of a sill are priority areas because moisture and debris can enter from the wheel arches. Feel for swelling or a soft edge where safe, and look for fresh black coating that stops abruptly around the arch. If corrosion appears to continue into the sill, treat it as a structural question rather than a cosmetic blemish.
Inspect the underside and structural metal
Sills and inner sills
Many cars have an outer sill that hides an inner section joined to the floor. The inner sill can rust from inside while the exterior still looks presentable. Inspect drain holes, seams, jacking points and both ends. A sound-looking outer skin does not confirm that the concealed reinforcement is intact.

Use a borescope only when an existing access hole allows entry without drilling or damaging the car. An illuminated camera can show flakes, standing debris or perforation in the visible part of the cavity, but its view is limited by bends, baffles and lighting. A clean image at one access point is not evidence that the entire sill is sound.
Floors and box sections
With the car safely lifted, inspect floor pans, cross-members, drain areas and enclosed box sections. Mud, oil and underseal can hide both rust and previous welding. Look for perforation, layered metal, irregular weld beads, heat distortion and patches whose edges do not follow the original panel. A repair may be perfectly serviceable, but only a close examination can establish whether sound metal was used and whether the repaired section carries load.
Suspension mounting points and strut towers
Trace the suspension loads into the body. Inspect mounting brackets, spring seats, control-arm attachment points and, where fitted, McPherson strut mounting areas. Corrosion at a mount can affect alignment and safety even when the surrounding body looks good. This check is model-dependent: not every classic uses struts, and the exact vulnerable points vary by design.

Do not scrape aggressively or remove structural material during a casual viewing. Photograph the area and have a shop assess it if the coating prevents a clear view.
Fresh underseal and other concealment
Be cautious with thick, fresh-looking black underseal, especially when it is glossy, uneven, soft or applied over visible dirt. It may be legitimate protection, but it can also conceal perforation, welding or accident repairs. Compare its texture and age across the underside, inspect edges where the coating meets brackets, and ask for dated restoration photographs or invoices. Documentation supports a claim; it does not replace seeing the metal.
Check the cabin for water-related clues
Open the doors, lift mats and inspect beneath the carpets where the seller permits it. Look for rust on cabin floors, dampness, tide marks, mouldy odour, corroded seat mounts and fasteners, or upholstery and door panels that are unusually faded. Check the boot floor and the area around spare-wheel wells as well.

Unusual rust on undercarriage components, flaking metal and corrosion inside the cabin can be consistent with prolonged water exposure. Texas DMV guidance treats these as clues that should prompt further investigation, not as conclusive proof of flood history. Leaking window seals, blocked drains and ordinary condensation can create some of the same symptoms. Ask how the car was stored, look for maintenance records and obtain a professional assessment before drawing a conclusion.

Separate collision clues from ordinary age
Use the complete body survey to build a pattern. Panel misalignment, a changed join, ripples, filler, overspray and a paint mismatch in one area may indicate a previous repair. Look inside the boot, bonnet and door apertures for different seam sealer, paint colour or weld texture. Check that fasteners on a panel have not been disturbed while neighbouring panels remain untouched.
These observations are leads, not verdicts. A repaired classic can be a good purchase if the work was documented and the structure is sound. Conversely, a car with original paint can have hidden corrosion. Ask the seller to explain discrepancies and compare the explanation with photographs, invoices and the physical evidence.
Use documents to test what you see
- Request restoration photographs showing bare metal, welding and primer before the final coating.
- Compare invoices with the areas claimed to have been repaired and note whether work was cosmetic or structural.
- Check whether panel replacement, rust treatment or suspension repairs were performed by a specialist familiar with the model.
- Record unanswered questions in writing so they can be resolved during an independent inspection.
Documents are supporting evidence. They should make the physical condition easier to understand, not persuade you to ignore an inaccessible or visibly weakened area.

Arrange an independent classic-car pre-purchase inspection when structural points are inaccessible, fresh coatings hide the metal, suspected repairs involve suspension or load-bearing areas, or you cannot tell whether a feature is original to the model. Hagerty recommends having a certified mechanic put a prospective purchase on a lift for a professional once-over and notes that shops may specialise in particular makes or models.
Choose a knowledgeable mechanic or marque specialist who is independent of the seller. Ask whether the inspection includes a lift, photographs, a road test where legal and safe, and a written assessment of structural corrosion, previous repairs and mechanical items. Attend if the shop allows it, but do not turn the appointment into a second casual viewing. Let the inspector access areas that a buyer cannot safely reach, and ask which findings are immediate safety concerns, which require restoration and which are merely cosmetic.
Compare several cars on the same criteria
When two or more cars are available, record observations in the same order. A more attractive car is not automatically the better candidate if its structure is hidden by coatings or if its inspection access is poor.

Do not assign a universal cosmetic-versus-structural pass mark. The acceptable condition depends on the car’s model, intended use, originality goals, repair quality and the buyer’s willingness to fund restoration. Use the table to expose uncertainty and decide which car merits a specialist inspection.

Common inspection mistakes and better alternatives
Judging only the exterior
A polished body can distract from inner sills, floors and mounts. Reserve time for the underside and cabin before discussing price.
Assuming every gap must be perfectly even
Classic production tolerances vary. Compare with model-specific references and inspect whether the panel operates correctly and whether adjacent evidence supports a repair theory.
Taking a borescope image as proof
A camera sees only the cavity, angle and lighting available through the access hole. Use it as an additional clue, then confirm structural condition from a lift inspection.
Peeling off protective material at a viewing
Do not damage the car or remove material that could be part of a legitimate restoration. Ask the seller for records and let a professional determine what lies beneath.

A jack is for lifting, not for holding a person beneath a vehicle. Stop and arrange proper support or a shop lift.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you researched the exact model’s weak points and normal panel joins?
- Was the car dry and viewed in natural light?
- Did you inspect reflections, gaps, bubbles, folded seams and overspray?
- Did you check sill ends, inner sill access, floors, box sections and suspension mounts?
- Could fresh underseal, mud or oil be hiding the metal?
- Did the cabin and boot show corrosion or water-related clues?
- Are suspected collision or rust repairs supported by photographs and invoices?
- Can every structural area be assessed safely, preferably on a lift?
- Would an independent marque specialist change your decision?
If any answer involving structure is “no,” treat the car as unverified rather than sound. Make the purchase conditional on an independent inspection and a clear understanding of the work required.
