How to Insert, Crop, and Edit Pictures in Google Docs

Insert a picture through Insert > Image, crop it with the blue handles in the Crop tool, and switch to Pages mode if text-wrapping and position controls are missing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To add a picture to a Google Doc, use Insert > Image, then crop from the image toolbar, adjust size and placement from the same toolbar or the image options panel, and switch to Pages mode if you need text-wrapping or position controls, because those controls are not available in pageless documents. The steps below cover desktop Google Docs, using the menu labels Google’s help pages currently name.

Insert a picture

  1. Open the document, place your cursor where the image should go, and choose Insert > Image.
  2. Choose a source from the menu: upload from your computer, Stock & web, Drive & Photos, Camera, or By URL.
  3. Select the image, then click Insert or Open, depending on the source you chose.

Google’s help also documents two faster routes: dragging an image from your desktop or from a website directly into the document, and copying an image and pasting it in.

Choosing an insert source

Pick the source that matches where the file already lives or how you plan to obtain it:

  • Computer upload suits files saved on your device.
  • Stock & web suits images Google makes available through that menu.
  • Drive & Photos suits files already stored in Google Drive or Google Photos.
  • Camera suits a picture you take at the moment of insertion.
  • By URL suits an image hosted at a web address you already have.

Google’s instructions list these sources but do not compare their quality, licensing, or privacy implications. If you are using a web image in a published document, check its usage terms yourself before inserting it.

Crop a picture

  1. Click the image to select it.
  2. Click Crop in the toolbar that appears.
  3. Drag the blue squares around the border inward to trim the edges or cut out an unwanted section.
  4. Press Enter, or click elsewhere in the document, to apply the crop.

Google’s crop help page describes the feature this way: “You can crop, mask and add borders to images that you have added to Google Docs, Slides and Vids.” The crop controls are the same tool that handles masks and borders, so the toolbar is the place to look for any of those changes.

Adjust size, placement, and appearance

Select the image and use the toolbar, or open Image options > All image options for the full set of controls. Google groups them as follows:

  • Size and rotation
  • Text wrapping and Position (see the section below for when these are unavailable)
  • Recolor
  • Adjustments, including transparency, brightness, and contrast

To swap an image without losing its position in the document, right-click it, choose Replace image, select a source, and pick the new file.

Fix missing text-wrap or position controls

If the text-wrapping and Position options do not appear, the document is most likely in pageless mode. Google’s help states that text wrapping and Position are unavailable in pageless documents. Switch the document to Pages mode to use them.

Wrapping and position options in Pages mode

Once you are in Pages mode, the image’s layout choices include:

  • In line, which places the image within a line of text.
  • Wrap text, which lets surrounding text flow around the image.
  • Break text, which breaks the text above and below the image.
  • Behind text, which places the image behind the text.
  • In front of text, which places the image over the text.

With Wrap text or Break text selected, Google also offers Move with text, which keeps the image attached to a paragraph when you edit around it, and Fix position on page, which keeps the image in a fixed place on the page instead.

Limits of these instructions

Google’s help pages do not show a publication date, and they do not specify the interface version they describe. Menu labels, the order of options, and which controls appear for a given account can change. If a label on your screen differs from the one above, look for the closest match in the same menu, and use the help pages linked below to confirm current behavior.

Google’s Workspace Learning Center also summarizes the toolbar options for cropping, image adjustments, and replacement, and is a useful companion if you prefer a visual walkthrough.
